  • Patent number: 5857613
Abstract: The invention provides spirally wound easy-open containers which comprise a spirally wound body wall having overlapped edges and which have capabilities and benefits associated with conventional butt jointed containers. The overlapped edges of the body wall define an easy-open seam extending helically between the ends of the container. A temporary adhesive between the overlapped edges of the body wall releasably adheres the overlapped edges of the body wall together and allows for opening of the container along the helical, easy-open seam. The easy-open containers provided according to the invention can be readily manufactured with only slight modifications to the conventional manufacturing process. Nevertheless, the easy-open containers of the invention can provide for material savings in container label construction and can allow for vacuum packaging of food products such as dough.

  • Patent number: 5858728
Abstract: The invention provides monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) which are cross-protective against endotoxemia caused by at least two different Gram-negative bacterial strains having different core structures; and methods of production of these antibodies. By use of the Kohler/Milstein procedure involving immunization of mice with a number of different rough strains of heat-killed Gram-negative bacteria, followed by fusion and proper screening of the resulting hybridomas, such murine MAbs are obtained. The murine MAbs may be chimerized or humanized by known methods.

  • Patent number: 5858673
Abstract: There is provided a sensitive multiplex RT-PCR assay for the detection of circulating prostate antigen expressing cells. Multiplex PCR uses multiple sets of primers to concurrently amplify different DNA sequences that can be readily resolved by gel electrophoresis. When applied to blood samples from prostate cancer patients, the nested multiplex RT-PCR can simultaneously detect PSA-expressing cells, PSM-expressing cells, and a ubiquitously expressed internal PCR control gene, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH), all within a single reaction.

  • Patent number: 5858133
Abstract: An aluminum-alloy article such as a fastener is prepared by providing an aluminum-alloy article precursor that is not in its final heat-treated state, and in one form is in its solution treated/annealed state. A curable organic coating material is also provided. The method includes anodizing the article precursor, preferably in chromic acid solution and without chemical sealing during anodizing, applying the organic coating material to the aluminum-alloy article precursor, and precipitation heat-treating the coated aluminum article precursor to its final heat-treated state, thereby simultaneously curing the organic coating. If the aluminum alloy temper is of the naturally aging type, it is optionally lightly deformed prior to precipitation treatment aging.

  • Patent number: 5856648
Abstract: A method and a device for particularly rapidly producing wells (18) in the surface of a rotating rotogravure cylinder (2) by a pulsed laser beam (13), which is deflected and directed via an optical lens (7) onto the surface of the rotogravure cylinder (2) to be processed. The power of a single laser beam pulse is adjusted in such a way that it is sufficient for removing the maximum volume needed for a well (18). Furthermore, the laser beam (13) is deflected by an optoacoustic modulator (8) by diffraction onto the optical axis of the lens (7), and the individual laser beam pulses are controlled in their pulse power by the same modulator (8) in accordance with the volumes of the wells to be formed.

  • Patent number: 5853265
Abstract: A resilient edge adapter is provided for defining an edge of a drainable athletic playing surface formed of a moldable material. The edge adapter includes a base portion for cooperably engaging an upper portion of a drainage channel and an upstanding portion extending upwardly from the base portion for restraining the moldable material when applied adjacent to the drainage channel, thereby defining an edge of the athletic playing surface. The upstanding portion may be formed of a resilient and elastically deformable material and the base portion may include an elongate continuous plug portion to cooperably engage a corresponding slot defined in the upper edge of the channel. An edge adapter is also provided which has a pair of upstanding portions extending upwardly from a base portion for forming a running track surface over both opposed edges of a grate. Associated methods for forming athletic playing surfaces are also provided.

  • Patent number: 5850903
Abstract: The present invention relates to extensible endless conveyor belt support structures and systems. A support structure has vertical support members (8) connected by V-shaped arrangements of pivotally connected (17, 19) link members (7, 9). By mounting at least the upper belt run rollers (4) on the vertical supports (8) the load can be more effectively supported whilst providing a relatively high ratio of extended to contracted length. By using telescopically extendable (14, 15) vertical supports (8), any increase in overall height of the support structure upon contraction thereof is minimized or avoided. By also having detachable lower belt run rollers (23) the support structure can be inserted into an endless conveyor belt installation without dismantling or even stopping running thereof. The invention also provides systems including setting devices for holding the support structures in their contracted form and deploying and collecting them into and from their extended conditions.

  • Patent number: 5851645
Abstract: A composite structure having an externally accessible electrical device embedded therein includes at least one tube disposed within the composite structure and extending from a first end which is electrically connected to an electrical lead of the electrical device to a second end which opens through the edge surface of the composite structure to thereby define an externally accessible electrical port. By plugging a corresponding connector into the electrical port, electrical contact can be established via the electrical lead with the electrical device embedded within the composite structure. By extending through the edge surface of the composite structure, the electrical ports can be accessed during the fabrication of the composite structure such that the operations of the embedded electrical device can be monitored.

  • Patent number: 5851099
Abstract: This invention relates to a ramp design permitting the positioning of a cargo ramp floor at any angle or height, which is integral with the aircraft such that it can be aligned to a vehicle transferring the load. The adjustable cargo platform assembly and the automated platform leveling system permits the ramp and ramp platform to be raised or lowered, but also permits the ramp platform to be tilted about a roll axis and aligned laterally with the floor of the load carrying vehicle to allow the cargo to be transferred to the aircraft. Efficient on-loading and off-loading of a palletized loading system (PLS) flatrack, directly off a PLS truck is achieved by such alignment. Actuators in the forward end of the ramp lift the platform as it rotates about the aft hinge point until the platform is even with the bottom of flatrack.
