  • Patent number: 5655950
Abstract: A method of fabricating an endodontic instrument by a machining operation is disclosed, and wherein a wire-like rod composed of a titanium alloy is advanced past a rotating grinding wheel at a relatively slow feed rate, with a sufficient depth of cut to remove all of the material on a given surface without over grinding a previously ground surface, and with the grinding wheel rotating at a relatively slow surface speed. The disclosed method is able to efficiently produce endodontic instruments having a high degree of flexibility, high resistance to torsional breakage, and with sharp cutting edges along the working length.

  • Patent number: 5655423
Abstract: A machine tool is provided having a spindle mounted for movement in a direction parallel to the spindle axis, the Z direction, and a direction perpendicular to the spindle axis, the X direction. The machine tool includes a machine bed and has means mounted to the machine bed for supporting at least one tool. At least one spindle is rotatably supported on the machine bed and includes a chuck for supporting a workpiece. The machine tool includes means mounting the spindle to the machine bed for movement in the Z direction and for independent movement in the X direction. Accordingly, the workpiece supporting means may be moved proximate to the tool supporting means and the workpiece may be engaged by a tool. The machine tool may further include feeder means for feeding bar stock to the workpiece supporting means so that the bar stock may be engaged by a tool. The machine tool may also include workpiece transfer means for facilitating the transfer of workpieces to and from the workpiece supporting means.

  • Patent number: 5653553
Abstract: An elongate drainage channel capable of receiving runoff from an athletic surface is provided which includes a bottom wall and a pair of sidewalls extending upwardly from the opposed sides of the bottom wall. The drainage channel also includes a projection extending transversely outwardly from the exterior of at least one of the sidewalls and spaced at a predetermined distance below the open top for defining a height to which a subsurface layer is applied adjacent to the drainage channel. The projection is also fracturable from the sidewall so as to act as a mechanical fuse to prevent vibratory or tamping machinery from damaging the drainage channel. In another embodiment of the invention, an elongate channel section is provided which has a bottom surface which includes end portions which are shaped as generally planar reference surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5654000
Abstract: Liquid bioadhesive microemulsions or liposomic dispersions containing proteinic substances, especially calcitonin, that allow the systemic, local or topical administration of drugs by transmucosal route are described. This type of administration shows some considerable advantages of activity, tolerability, dosage individualization and drug stability. The compositions contain proteinic substances, and a polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene thermosetting copolymer. At body temperature the viscosity of the compositions is increased and provides increase residence time at the administration site.

  • Patent number: 5653590
Abstract: A kit of endodontic instruments which are adapted for use in performing root canal therapy, and wherein the instruments in the kit have increasing diameters and differing tapers. The instruments are designed to be used sequentially in root canal therapy, and the difference of the tapers serves to prevent the whole working length of the instruments from being engaged with the wall of the tapered canal being formed, to thereby reduce the frictional loading of the instruments and the risk of breakage.

  • Patent number: 5651559
Abstract: The protective guard for protecting against damage to a vehicle during a trailer coupling operation includes an impact absorbing guard body covering at least a portion of the outer surface of the longitudinal end portion of a trailer hitch housing extending away from the trailer. The guard body includes a compressible, resilient material such that the guard body is capable of cushioning the impact of a vehicle with a trailer hitch housing. The guard body thereby protects the vehicle from inadvertent damage. The guard body includes a concave inner surface defining an arcuate slot extending inwardly into the guard body. The arcuate slot is adapted to receive an outwardly projecting, generally horizontal flange which extends about an exterior portion of the longitudinal end portion of the trailer hitch housing.

  • Patent number: 5651966
Abstract: Fixed-dried human blood platelets and processes for preparing the same are disclosed. The platelets, upon reconstitution: adhere to thrombogenic surfaces; do not adhere to non-thrombogenic surfaces; undergo shape change (spreading) upon adhering to a thrombogenic surface; adhere to one another to form a hemostatic plug upon adhering to a thrombogenic surface; and release their granular contents. Pharmaceutical formulations containing the same are also disclosed. The platelets are preferably fixed by means of a fixative such as formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, or glutaraldehyde, or fixed by means of a permanganate fixate. • Patent number: 5652436
Abstract: A diamond-based structure includes a substrate, an adhesive material on a face of the substrate, and an array of spaced apart diamond mesas bonded to the substrate by the adhesive material. In particular, each of the diamond mesas can have a growth surface adjacent the substrate and an interfacial surface opposite the substrate, and the interfacial surface can be smooth relative to the growth surface. This structure can be fabricated by providing a sacrificial substrate, forming a plurality of diamond mesas on a face of the sacrificial substrate, bonding the diamond mesas to a transfer substrate, and removing the sacrificial substrate. Accordingly, the interfacial surfaces of the diamond, which are formed adjacent the sacrificial substrate and then exposed by removing the substrate are smooth.
