    Abstract: An electrode for use in a reduced pressure region in a mass spectrometer whereby the electrode is subject to deposition of dielectric (non-conducting) substances thereon, which can cause unstable performance of the mass spectrometer. The surface portion of the electrode that is for providing an equipotential boundary of an electric field for influencing charged particles is made rough, in contrast to the prior art of providing a polished surface. The rough surface provides projections and cavities, which may have a regular or irregular occurrence, which it has been found significantly reduces the deposition of dielectric substances from the charged particles thereon. A preferred structure is for a rod electrode (42) to have a screw thread (44) formed thereon whereby the thread crests (43) along the rod electrode provide projections (43) and the thread roots (45) provide cavities.

    Abstract: Methods for applying an RF field in a two-dimensional electrode structure include applying RF voltages to main electrodes and to compensation electrodes. The voltages on the compensation electrodes may be adjusted to be proportional to the voltages on the main electrodes. The adjustment(s) may be done to optimize the RF field for different modes of operation such as ion ejection and ion dissociation. For dissociation, a supplemental RF dipole may be applied, or two mutually orthogonal dipoles may be applied in phase quadrature to form a circularly polarized field. Electrode structures may include main trapping electrodes, one or more compensation electrodes, one or more ion exit apertures, and means for applying the various desired voltages.

    Abstract: A pressure sensor made of a wafer with a pair of parallel silicon layers and a silicon oxide layer there between, comprises a vibrating microassembly formed as a silicon beam, which is arranged in a plane perpendicular to the silicon layers and fastened to a supporting base. A control devise is formed from a portion of one of the silicon layers and is driven by a signal of a predetermined frequency component, which under absolute vacuum conditions makes the microassembly to freely oscillate at a known frequency and amplitude relative to the supporting base within a cavity formed by removing the silicon oxide layer. An optical detection system detects deviations of the frequency and/or amplitude of oscillation of the microassembly from the known frequency and/or amplitude.

    Abstract: A spectrophotometer having an optical system for directing a beam of substantially monochromatic excitation light to a liquid sample contained in a well (3) of a well plate for interaction with the sample for absorption or emission measurements to analyse the sample. The optical system includes two apertures (46, 28) for establishing a Kohler illumination region outside the well, that is an excitation beam region between conjugate images (18, 21) of the two apertures. This excitation beam region is then demagnified and imaged (10, 9) into the well (3). The invention provides for the shape of the Kohler illumination region to correspond to the shape of the well space so that all of the liquid sample is uniformly illuminated without the well obstructing any portion of the illuminating excitation beam of light.

    Abstract: A dissolution system provides remote flow cells integrated into a manifold device. The manifold device communicates with liquid input and output lines associated with each flow cell, as well as fiber-optic input and output lines associated with each flow cell. Liquid samples are respectively drawn from dissolution vessels, optically-related measurements are taken, and the samples are thereafter returned their respective vessels. The manifold device can be adapted to receive probe-type instruments that incorporate the fiber-optics, wherein each probe-type instrument is associated with each flow cell. Alternatively, each corresponding pair of fiber-optic input and output lines are disposed in opposing, optically-aligned relation and probe-type instruments are not used. The gap between the ends of the opposing fiber-optic lines provides a light path across the corresponding flow cell.

    Abstract: A mass spectrometer in which a substance is introduced into a plasma (28) which contains analyte ions as the plasma (28) is passing through an aperture (42), for example in a skimmer cone (40) between two vacuum regions (38) and (44) so that the substance interacts with the plasma (28) thereby reducing the concentration of interfering polyatomic or multicharged ions in the plasma by reactive or collisional interactions. The substance may be supplied via passage (60) having an outlet (63) in skimmer cone (40). The invention gives improved attenuation of interfering ions because the substance is supplied directly into the plasma (28) as it is substantially radially confined by aperture (42) and before an ion beam (58) is extracted. Alternatively or additionally a substance may be supplied directly into the plasma within aperture (36) in sampling cone (34).

    Abstract: In some embodiments, a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method comprises generating an indicator of an anticipated time-averaged power for a radio-frequency (RF) pulse set, and anticipatively adjusting a cooling supplied by a cryogenic cooling fluid to an RF coil according to the indicator of the anticipated time-averaged power. The cryogenic cooling adjustment may be performed using a cryogenic fluid heater and/or a mass flow controller disposed in the cryogenic fluid path. The time difference between the start of the cooling adjustment and the start of the RF pulse set is set to be equal to the difference in timescales between the cooling effect of the cooling adjustment and the heating effect of the RF pulse set on the RF coil.

An RF transceiver antenna may be mounted to the guide for communicating with the RFID tag of the sample container. The sample probe device is moved into proximity with a sample container to read a code stored by an RFID tag attached to the sample container, whereby a sample contained in the sample container can be uniquely identified. The code can be associated with additional information relating to the identified sample.

    Abstract: In some embodiments, a tandem (MS/MS) mass spectrometry method includes selecting a collision-induced dissociation (CID) voltage amplitude and a q-parameter value for a quadrupole ion trap to optimize a daughter ion fragmentation process for a given parent ion mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio. The q and CID voltage values may be selected according to a look-up table and/or using approximate analytical expressions. The correspondence between m/z values and (q, CID) value pairs may be established by pre-measurement calibration. A fragmentation-optimized q value may be computed according to m/z, and a CID voltage value may be determined according to the computed q value. A user may also force q to another value, for example in order to facilitate trapping of a desired daughter ion mass range, and the controller computes a CID voltage value according to the forced q value.

    Abstract: Enhanced nuclear polarization of a magnetic resonance sample provides greater detection sensitivity over conventional NMR spectroscopy due to a method and an apparatus of increasing the detection sensitivity. Molecules capable of forming photo-excited triplet states are combined in a solution with a NMR sample. While in a uniform magnetic field the solution is frozen, optical radiation is applied to produce photo-excited triplet states molecules and a microwave radiation is applied to stimulate transitions of one of the triplet lines producing dynamic polarization of the nuclei in the magnetic resonance sample. The frozen sample is then rapidly melted and a NMR analysis is performed.
