  • Patent number: 3993616
Abstract: Water swellable absorbent articles, made from polyelectrolytes, containing free carboxylic groups, together with methods for their preparation, and a composition useful to make said articles are disclosed. The composition contains N-substituted amide compounds as the crosslinking agents. The articles are crosslinked by heating and/or removing substantially all of the water from the precursor composition. The absorbent articles are useful as surgical sponges, diapers, tampons, meat trays, bath mats and the like.

  • Patent number: 3966690
Abstract: Thermoplastic hydrocarbon resins are obtained by copolymerizing an isoolefin such as isobutylene with a diolefin such as piperylene in the present of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in an inert hydrocarbon solvent. These resins have a softening point in the range from 80.degree. to 110.degree.C. and are compatible with ethylene vinyl acetate and polyethylene resins and are useful as tackifier resins or components in hot melt adhesives.

  • Patent number: 3954721
Abstract: Water-insoluble, water-swellable fibers adapted to bind aqueous fluids such as body exudates are prepared by spinning fibers from an organic solvent solution of a copolymer of maleic anhydride with suitable vinyl aromatic monomers. The copolymer solution also contains a small amount of a polyfunctional cross-linking agent such as an adduct of glycerine with ethylene oxide and propylene oxide which reacts to cross-link and plasticize the copolymer chains when the fibers are heated and dried. The cross-linked copolymer fibers are then rendered hydrophilic and water-swellable by reaction with ammonia.

  • Patent number: 3945973
Abstract: N,N'-diglycidyl-N,N'-dialkyl aryl disulfonamides are prepared having an epoxy equivalent weight range from about 234 to about 1100. These polyepoxides are useful to make coated articles having superior solvent resistance and impact resistance when cured with conventional epoxy curing agents.

  • Patent number: 3944481
Abstract: A catalytic process for hydrocracking crude oil fractions into a C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkane mixture having a normal paraffin to isoparaffin molar ratio greater than about 3:1 and thermally cracking this mixture to recover ethylene and propylene. The hydrocracking catalysts used are made from a Group VIII metal, a Group VI B metal or mixtures thereof, with a halogen supported on a silica-alumina support or a natural or synthetic faujasite. The catalysts must be sulfided prior to or during use.
