Abstract: A high sensitivity thermal paper resistant to image erasure is disclosed. The thermal paper has a color-forming composition comprising a chromogenic material, an acidic developer material, a water insoluble polymer consisting of poly .alpha.-methylstyrene or .alpha.-methylstyrene/vinyltoluene copolymer, and a thermal modifier. Preferably the thermal modifier is selected from acetoacet-o-toluidine, diphenoxyethane, phenyl-1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate, diheptadecyl ketone and octadecanamide. The disclosed composition when thermally imaged is surprisingly resistant to image erasure and smearing attributable to fingerprint oils.
Abstract: A process of abstracting sulfur from H.sub.2 S and generating hydrogen is disclosed comprising dissolving Pd.sub.2 X.sub.2 (.mu.-dppm).sub.2 in a solvent and then introducing H.sub.2 S. The palladium complex abstracts sulfur, forming hydrogen and a (.mu.-S) complex. The (.mu.-S) complex is readily oxidizable to a (.mu.-SO.sub.2) adduct which spontaneously loses SO.sub.2 and regenerates the palladium complex.

Abstract: A method for enhancing surface properties of a polymeric solid is disclosed involving chlorination in the presence of actinic light to a depth substantially not in excess of 1800 .ANG. and to a chlorine content by weight in said 1800 .ANG. layer not exceeding 20%. Such limited chlorination of only the molecular surface layer provides enhancement of the polymeric solids' surface and barrier properties without any perceptible deterioration of the polymer's bulk physical properties.
Abstract: Cubic boron nitride is deposited on a substrate by an activated reactive evaporation method involving heating a substrate in a vacuum, evaporating metal vapors into a zone between the substrate and the metals source, said source consisting of one or more materials selected from the group consisting of the elements chromium, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, and manganese; introducing a boron and nitrogen containing gas into the zone, such as borazene (B.sub.3 N.sub.3 H.sub.6), a mixture of diborane and nitrogen, or a mixture of boron trichloride and ammonia, for example, and generating an electrical field in the zone in order to ionize the metal vapors and gas atoms in the zone with an electrically negative bias impressed on the substrate, the value of the bias depending upon the particular activated reactive evaporation process utilized, whereby cubic boron is produced containing from 0.05 percent to 5.0 percent of one or more of the aforesaid elements.
Abstract: An improved solenoid is disclosed. The improvement consists of injection molding one or more components of the magnetic return circuit of the solenoid, particularly the magnetically permeable can, from a polymer having a filler of soft magnetic material at preferably a 20-63% by volume loading level. The injection molded polymer filled solenoid has higher efficiencies than expected based on the decrease in total metal content.

Abstract: A process for casting metallic strips thicker than from melt-drag processes but thinner than the inherent normal thickness of a cast melt is disclosed. The disclosed process casts molten metal, without decanting or accelerating the molten stream, onto a channel-shaped chill surface. After casting, the molten strip acquires a high thermal gradient. Following thermal shrinkage of the underside the molten top layer is squeegeed using a chill roll to uniformly distribute and crystallize the top surface.
Abstract: A process for preparing polylactide (PLA) microcapsules is described and involves dissolving PLA in a mixture of two miscible organic liquids, the higher vapor pressure liquid having solvent power for PLA and the second having little or no solvent power for PLA. The solution is prepared such that it is near its saturation point for PLA. Encapsulation of dispersed core material is achieved by vaporizing the liquid having solvent power for PLA causing phase separation of the PLA, then transferring the separated dispersion to an organic liquid having no solvent power for the PLA in order to harden the encapsulating coating. The disclosed process enables forming true microcapsules or reservoir-type devices encapsulating liquid core material particularly aqueous liquid core material and oil in water emulsion or suspensions.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for producing an abrasion resistant UV curable photopolymerizable composition for coating substrates. The process involves dense grafting and comprises hydrolyzing in an aqueous acidic solution a trialkoxysilane to render it organophillic followed by dispersion with fine silica or alumina. Grafting of the hydrolyzed trialkoxysilane to the silica or alumina is effected through dehydration. The grafted material is then dispersed into intimate contact with one or more photopolymerizable monomers and photoinitiators.
Abstract: A pressure multiplying dispenser for delivering fluid, preferably as a spray to the atmosphere, from a source of fluid, preferably a spray bottle, is described. The dispenser includes in combination a hollow cylindrical member, a nozzle delivery tube within the cylindrical member and a hollow actuator piston slideable within the cylindrical member which acts to multiply the pressure of a squeeze applied to the spray bottle.
Abstract: A novel optically clear combination which is a composition of matter is disclosed. The disclosed composition is an EPDM vulcanizate of remarkable clarity, the formulation of which involves a synergistic combination of EPDM elastomer, fumed silica, coupling agent, antioxidant, at least one and preferably two curing coagents, and preferably an antistatic agent.
Abstract: A composite assembly knurling tool for forming uniformly-spaced horizontal serrations continuous across the surface of a metal flake producing drum is disclosed. The knurling tool comprises an alternating array of spacer and forming discs substantially conforming to the contour of the metal flake producing drum.

Abstract: A novel in-mold electrodeposition process is disclosed for the production of plastic parts having conductive polymeric coatings such as polypyrroles or polythiophenes. Parts produced according to the novel disclosed in-mold electrodeposition process would have wide applicability including static free plastic parts shielding devices and circuits. The disclosed process advances the art by enabling the utilization of conductive polymers many of which were heretofore considered too brittle for commercial adaptation.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for thermochemically converting a carbohydrate material into ethanol wherein the carbohydrate material and a metal salt are reacted at elevated temperature to form an intermediate carbohydrate complex salt and/or a lactate metal salt which then is pyrolyzed in the presence of water into ethanol. Preferred carbohydrate materials for the process are various sugars and the metal salt preferably is a metal oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate. The intermediate complex and/or lactate salt may be separated from its aqueous reaction mixture prior to its pyrolysis to reduce the ultimate separation of ethanol from water. Alternatively, the metal of the metal salt may be one whose carbonate decomposes to metal oxide and carbon dioxide during the pyrolysis step of the process to generate said metal salt in situ.
