Abstract: A method for altering the electronic and optical properties of a chemical compound having a band gap and a framework that includes ?-delocalized electrons. The method includes complexing a Lewis acid to a basic site within the framework to form a Lewis acid adduct having a band gap that differs from the band gap of the chemical compound. The ?max of the Lewis acid adduct can be shifted to a longer wavelength in comparison to the ?max of the chemical compound. In various versions, the chemical compound can be a conjugated oligomer, a conjugated polymer, or a small molecule comprising a conjugated ?-electron system. Electronic devices that include Lewis acid adducts are also provided.

Abstract: An object is to provide a turbomolecular pump with rotor and stator blades alternatively arranged that can prevent collision between the adjacent rotor and stator blades due to air inrush, which may take place due to vacuum break in a system operation, prevent excessive centrifugal force to a hub portion of a rotor, and further enhance pumping performance. A blade cross sectional profile taken along the circumferential direction of each of the rotor blades of a rotor blade stage has an upstream portion curved convexly backward in a rotational direction of the rotor and a downstream portion curved convexly forward in the rotational direction of the rotor, thereby forming the blade cross sectional profile into an S-shape or inversed S-shape.

Abstract: Invention is related to novel compounds -5-aryl-4-(5-substituted 2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,2,3-thiadiazoles with general formula (I). The compounds can be used in biomedicine as active ingredients in pharmaceutical formulations, because they inhibit Hsp90 chaperone which participate in cancer progression. This invention is also related to new intermediate compounds which are used for the synthesis of thiadiazoles of general formula (I).

Abstract: Methods, compositions and articles of manufacture involving soluble conjugated polymers are provided. The conjugated polymers have a sufficient density of polar substituents to render them soluble in a polar medium, for example water and/or methanol. The conjugated polymer may desirably comprise monomers which alter its conductivity properties. In some embodiments, the inventors have provided cationic conjugated polymers (CCPs) comprising both solubilizing groups and conductive groups, resulting in conductive conjugated polymers soluble in polar media. The different solubility properties of these polymers allow their deposition in solution in multilayer formats with other conjugated polymers. Also provided are articles of manufacture comprising multiple layers of conjugated polymers having differing solubility characteristics. Embodiments of the invention are described further herein.

Abstract: A method of controlling the activity of a biologically active compound. The method concerns an oligonucleotide-based compound, comprising a hairpin-forming oligonucleotide, an effector moiety physically associated with the oligonucleotide, where the effector moiety possesses a biological activity, and a regulating moiety physically associated with the oligonucleotide, where the regulating moiety controls the biological activity of the effector moiety by interacting with the effector moiety. The oligonucleotide can assume a hairpin configuration, where the effector and regulating moieties interact, or an open configuration, where the effector and regulating moieties fail to interact. Depending on the nature of the effector and regulating moieties, either configuration can result in the expression of the biological activity of the effector moiety.

Abstract: Metal-ligand combination initiators are provided which yield organometallic complexes capable of the polymerization of olefins to high molecular weight polymers. Additionally, these initiators also enable the copolymerization of olefins with functionalized comonomers. These organometallic complexes comprise of a late transition metal with a neutral chelating ligand that contains a Lewis basic functionality in conjugation with an electronically delocalized conduit extending from the metal to the functionality. This structural feature results in a highly active complex, which generates high molecular weight polymers with unique microstructures. Under particular conditions, the organometallic complexes provide for the living polymerization of monomers and comonomers.

Abstract: A method for the synthesis of well-defined rod-coil block copolymers consisting of P3HT donor and C60 acceptor chromophores (P3HT-b-P(SxAy)-C60) in a molecular architecture is reported for use in bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. In thin films of the resulting block copolymer, reproducible self-assembly into well-defined “nanofibrils” is observed. This is the first example of a block copolymer containing a C60 derivative that shows exclusively a nanofibrilar structure. A substantial improvement in device performance is achieved when the block copolymer is used as a “surfactant” for controlling the interface morphology of the P3HT:PCBM donor-acceptor phase domains within the composite.
