  • Patent number: 5026025
Abstract: A hose joint with an opening-closing valve comprises: a cylinder member having an axial bore, a center bore projecting from the inner surface of the axial bore in the direction of the center of the axis, and a ring-shaped valve seat in which one end surface of the valve seat constitutes a valve seating surface; a valve body comprising a shaft-shaped portion and a head portion formed at one end of the shaft-shaped portion, and an O-ring for sealing between the outer surface of the shaft-shaped portion and the inner surface of the center bore when the head portion is in contact with the valve seating surface; and a spring for urging the valve body in the direction of allowing the head portion of the valve body to come into contact with the valve seating surface. The operation of engaging an insert pipe member, fixed to a hose, with the cylinder member opens the valve seat and the valve body. Disengagement of the insert pipe member from the cylinder member closes the valve seat and the valve body.

  • Patent number: 5026198
Abstract: In a lockable folding joint of a ladder having two arms with their flat heads pivoted to one another, a detent block used to engage one of spaced notches of one of the flat heads is held resiliently and firmly by an improved mechanism. The mechanism includes a one-piece curved rod spring which has two opposite arc-shaped rod portions whose one ends are attached to the detent block, two coiled portions formed at another ends of the arc-shaped rod portions and a U-shaped rod portion extending from the coiled portions. A spring plate has a rolled end pivoted to one of the arm with the same pivot pin as the coiled portions. The U-shaped portion depresses the spring plate so that the hook end of the spring plate is engaged tightly with the detent block.

  • Patent number: 5022078
Abstract: A television signal is distorted by passing it through a distortion amplifier which applies a Gaussian distortion curve to the signal. The curve has a maximum increase in amplitude of about 38 dB, which is about 30 dB with respect to the amplitude increase of the video carrier. The signal is further modified by the addition of gated jamming signals between the video and audio carriers. The jamming signals are present only during the horizontal and vertical blanking intervals and so do not affect the quality of the picture reproduced by the receiver. The distorted television signal is restored by applying a filter function which is the inverse of the distortion function. The gated jamming signals are removed by the restoring filter to a degree which permits the television receiver to read the horizontal and vertical sync signals and the color burst signal during the blanking intervals.

  • Patent number: 5021094
Abstract: A grouting composition for sealing a borehole or other cavity contains 90-99.9% finely divided water swellable clay and 0.1-10% polyacrylate thinner having a molecular weight of about 5,000 to 95,000. The grouting composition is mixed with fresh water to provide a completely reswellable, unflocculated, easily placed, low permeability sealing composition. The thinner allows a very high concentration of water-swellable clay in the composition. A preferred grouting composition contains 98-99.9% sodium bentonite and 0.1-2% polyacrylate thinner of molecular weight of about 2,000 to 50,000. In use, 50lb. of the preferred grouting composition is mixed with 11-14 gallons of fresh water, to provide a grouting mixture which includes about 25-40% reswellable solids.

  • Patent number: 5013155
Abstract: A portable hand held instrument is capable of making accurate colorimetric measurements in the field. The instrument has a body which houses the electronic circuitry and a door which allows a vial having a solution to be measured to be placed therein. The vial is illuminated lengthwise by a light beam of two wavelengths, one of which serves as a reference. The light emerging from the top of the vial is spatially integrated and directed to a detector. The detector measures the intensity of the transmitted light, and the electronic circuit determines the difference between the logarithms of the detected signals. This difference is multiplied by a constant to produce a signal representative of the concentration and is displayed. The resolution of the measurement is automatically increased when the processor senses that the signals are too small.

  • Patent number: 5010679
Abstract: A pivot system used in a weedless fishing lure enables the barbed point to be exposed only when a fish strikes the lure. The hook eye is restrained by a resilient band, such as an elastic band, on the outside of the lure. Alternatively, the hook is contained within the lure body. The barbed point is concealed within a slot in the lure until a fish strikes the lure, at which time tension is put on the line and the fish hook is rotated so that the barbed point is revealed. The fishing line is attached to a portion of the fish hook, extending from the shank, positioned in the slot through the lure. A fish hook used with the lure has an arm extending from the shank to which the line is attached.

  • Patent number: 5011692
Abstract: The invention relates to sustained pulsewise release pharmaceutical preparation which comprices drug-containing polymeric material layers (layers A) and polymeric material layers containing the drug in question only in a slight amount or free of the drug (layers B) disposed alternatingly, with the whole surface extending in the direction perpendicular to the layer plane being coated with a polymeric material which is insoluble in water or scarcely soluble in water (polymeric material C).This pharmaceutical preparation of this invention is designed so that active ingredients which should desirably be released pulsewise can be released therefrom in a pulse-like and clinically significant manner and thereby the pharmacological effects of said active ingredients can be maintained for a prolonged period of time.

  • Patent number: 5008984
Abstract: A jewelry closure includes a pair of closure members for magnetically engaging together. One or both closure members includes a magnet. A first closure member of the pair is supported by a casing which extends outwardly to receive the second closure member when both closure members are magnetically engaged together. The closure is secured by a clip attached to the outer surface of the casing. A portion of the clip lies adjacent an outer end surface of the second closure member when the closure is secured. In closed position the clip prevents the closure members from being separated when the jewelry closure is secured.
