  • Patent number: 4965942
Abstract: A dipstick handle of the invention includes a unitarily molded handle, such as a finger ring, having an integrally molded hollow shaft. The shaft has one or two pairs of opposed slots through its outside surface. A dipstick blade is received by one end of a hollow insert which has two pairs of tabs at its other end for snapping into the slots through the surface of the shaft. Pressure on the tabs engaged in the slots releases the tabs and enables the insert and dipstick blade to be withdrawn. The handle seals the tube into which the dipstick is fitted to avoid escape of noxious gases. The blade may be oriented in any of four directions with respect to a plane of the handle.

  • Patent number: 4964675
Abstract: A method of electro-hydraulic control of the cutting and self-advancing mine-roof support units in an automated longwall is carried out in dependence on the measured lengths to which the rams pushing the support are extended, with extraction by the cutter occurring in long cuts extending over almost the entire length of the longwall. After each extraction cut, the conveyor is advanced by an amount equal to the depth to which the cutter has cut, and the process of advancing each group is triggered in dependence on the length to which the pushing rams have been extended. The self-advancing roof-support units inserted in the longwall are divided into groups which, depending on the respective state of operation, are moved forward individually and successively, in each case by a preset extension length of the pushing rams.

  • Patent number: 4959148
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing and/or modifying specific target substances in the blood is disclosed. The invention includes a column or chamber in which selected bioreactant molecules are suitably retained for reaction within a porous hydrogel polymer matrix by reversibly quenching the reactant propensity with a displaceable surrogate and polymerizing an insoluble cross-linked hydrogel in such manner that the hydrogel polymer replicates the shape of the bioreactant molecule. This replicated phantom shape in the polymer then exhibits profound dispersion-force affinity for the bioreactant. The invention provides for retention of a wide variety of therapeutic reactants and reaction products while confining the reaction within the column.

  • Patent number: 4949216
Abstract: A device for discouraging small domestic or wild animals from frequenting areas where they may become a nuisance. The device comprises a mat made of non-conductive material to be spread over the area. A plurality of conductive surfaces are spaced on the upper surface of the mat so that adjacent conductive surfaces are electrically insulated from each other. An electric control is associated with the conductive surfaces and provides electric power thereto so that when an animal walks on the mat its body completes a circuit between live and ground areas on the mat and the animal is thereby provided with an unpleasant electrical sensation.
