Patent number: 4133397Abstract: A multiple in-hole motor and drill combination is disclosed for drilling a large diameter earth bore. The motor assembly is supported on a fluid circulating pipestring, and includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced longitudinally extended in-hole motor and drill combinations to which motor fluid is supplied through the running in pipestring, the motor fluid then passing through the rotary drill bit driven by the motor and returning to the top of the well. The plural in-hole motor drill assemblies are rotated during the drilling operation. A hydraulic drive motor powered by a separate fluid source is employed to rotate a housing to drive the multiple motor drill assemblies rotatably about the central support. The lower end of the multiple motor drill assembly supports a number of weights to apply drilling weight to the bits.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: Smith International, Inc.Inventor: John E. Tschirky

Patent number: 4133516Abstract: A shock absorber assembly has an outer body connectible at one end in a well drill string and an inner body connectible at one end in the well drilling string, with the bodies telescopically coengaged. Between the bodies is an annular space, filled with hydraulic fluid and containing a pressure equalizing annular piston. Stacked sets of dished-spring washers are disposed in coengaged frictional relation to form parallel-acting columns in the annular space between the two bodies. The equalizing piston is exposed to the pressure of drilling fluid inside the inner body, in one form, and outside the outer body, in another form. Another equalizing piston defines between the bodies a fluid filled chamber containing torque transmitting means for causing the bodies to rotate as a unit during drilling operations while allowing telescopic extension and retraction of the bodies. Telescoping of the bodies causes fluid transfer through restricted passages to dampen the telescopic motion.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: Christensen, Inc.Inventor: Rainer Jurgens

Patent number: 4133558Abstract: A misalignment connector for large pipelines includes an internal, metal seal ring having an external spherical surface which is axially and circumferentially loaded between opposed internal spherical metal surfaces of pipe connector hubs having parts engaged with holding means having spherical surfaces enabling the connector to be made up with the pipe connector hubs disposed over a range of angular misalignment and with the sealing ring loaded axially and inwardly when the connector body parts are secured together by the holding means to prevent relaxation of the preload on the sealing ring. The metal sealing ring is initially supported on one of the hubs by means enabling relative angular motion of the sealing ring as it is loaded between misaligned hubs. The hubs are provided with thrust surfaces enabling them to be initially preloaded against the sealing ring by a loading tool.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: Vetco, Inc.Inventor: Arthur G. Patent number: 4133557Abstract: A misalignment conductor for large pipelines or conductor pipes includes an internal, metal seal ring having an external spherical surface which is axially and circumferentially loaded between opposed internal spherical metal surfaces of connector hubs. Connector body parts engaged with or formed on the pipe connector ends or hubs have spherical surfaces enabling the connector to be made up with the pipe connector hubs disposed over a range of angular misalignment. The sealing ring is preloaded by a loading tool when the connector body parts are secured together to prevent relaxation of the preload on the sealing ring. The metal sealing ring is initially supported on one of the hubs by means enabling angular adjustment of the sealing ring as it is loaded between misaligned hubs.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: Vetco, Inc.Inventor: Arthur G. Ahlstone

Patent number: 4133418Abstract: A through the flowline or "TFL" tool selector has a base provided with a number of spaced flowline ports and a diverter tube shiftably mounted in a housing for selective communication with the flowline ports. The diverter tube is actuated by a reciprocable and rotatable piston and cam drive which shifts the diverter tube progressively from one flowline port to another. The piston is shiftable in a cylinder to which pressure fluid is supplied and then exhausted to effect actuation of the cam drive.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: Vetco, Inc.Inventor: Bernard H. Patent number: 4124230Abstract: A pipe connector has a pin initially stabbed into a box, the pin and box then being axially loaded together at confronting transverse surfaces while the pin and box are pressurized to expand the box and compress the pin, so that when the pressure is relieved a pressure energized shrink fit is provided and the connector is rendered rigid to enhance tensile, compressive and bending strength and provide a fluid tight joint useful in making up lengths of pipe such as piles and pipelines.
