Patent number: 7059352Abstract: The present invention is directed to valves for use in controlling the flow of fluid and, more particularly, to a triggerable passive valve for use in controlling the flow of fluid. In one embodiment, a fluid delivery channel is connected to a flow restrictor and a passive valve positioned in the fluid delivery channel downstream from the flow restrictor. The first passive valve prevents fluid from moving through the channel when the pressure exerted by the fluid on the first passive valve is below the burst pressure. A pneumatic actuator actuates the valve by forcing fluid through the passive valve.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2005Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: LifeScan ScotlandInventor: Sebastian Bohm

Patent number: 6254623Abstract: An ultrasonic clamp coagulator assembly embodying the principles of the present invention is configured to permit selective cutting, coagulation, and clamping of tissue during surgical procedures. In an ultrasonic blade according to the present invention, the blade is constructed such that the cross-sectional area of the blade is smaller at the proximal end of the compression zone than at the distal end. This performance-enhancing feature creates a more consistent cutting and coagulation of the tissue along the length of the blade reducing the time the blade is in operation and reducing overall heat generation.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1999Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventors: Chester G. Patent number: 6162235Abstract: With the advent of laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery, the patient is benefiting from shorter hospitalization, less pain, and generally better outcomes. However, the minimization of the size of incision a surgeon uses in these procedures has created some unique challenges. Large tissue masses, such as fibroid tissue masses, are traditionally excised during the surgical procedure and removed intact from the patient through the surgical incision. One common procedure for reducing the size of large tissue masses is generally referred to as morcellation. In the present invention, a method of morcellating tissue is described that includes the steps of: inserting a ballistic specimen bag through a cannula; opening the ballistic specimen bag; inserting tissue into the ballistic specimen bag; closing the ballistic specimen bag around a ultrasonic surgical instrument; and cutting or debulking the tissue with the ultrasonic surgical instrument.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1998Date of Patent: December 19, 2000Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey J. Patent number: 6120501Abstract: A safety-shielded trocar having an obturator with a linear cutting edge surface defining a base width substantially less than the diameter of the safety shield is disclosed. When the trocar is inserted through tissue, the tissue dilates from the width of the linear incision to accommodate the size of the safety shield of the trocar, thus making it possible to provide an access opening greater than the incisional width made by the linear cutting edge surface of the obturator. In a preferred embodiment, the safety shield has a shield tip region which is asymmetric to facilitate the dilation of the tissue as the trocar is inserted.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1999Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventors: Gary L.
