Abstract: Polymeric materials are repolymerized by intensely admixing the polymer with an additive having the formula: ##STR1## wherein M is titanium or zirconium, R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each a monovalent alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl, aryl or alkaryl group having up to 20 carbon atoms or a halogen or ether substituted derivative thereof, and, in addition, R.sup.2 may also be an oxy derivative or an ether substituted oxy derivative of said groups; A, B, and C are each a monovalent aroxy, thioaroxy, diester phosphate, diester pyrophosphate, oxyalkylamino, sulfonyl or carboxyl containing up to 30 carbon atoms; and a+b+c=3. The repolymerized polymers have improved physical properties and higher heat distortion temperatures, experience less thermal degradation and show greater solvolysis resistance than the polymers prior to the repolymerization.
Abstract: A clothes hoist comprising a bearing block secured to the outer surface of the fixed lower standard of a clothes hoist but having an annular projection which extends through an aperture in the wall of the lower standard and into an aperture in the side wall of a tubular inner member to thereby support the tubular inner member, the tubular inner member itself supporting a nut which threadably engages a non-circular threaded stem which, upon rotation of the nut, raises or lowers the upper standard. Rotation is effected by rotating a handle on the end of a driving pinion skirt journalled in the bearing block, and having a driving pinion on its inner end which meshes with a driven pinion on the nut. A body surrounds the lower standard and overlies an outwardly projecting portion of the bearing block.
Abstract: A novel chromogenic and fluorescent substrate for measuring the concentration of kallikrein in urine. The novel substrate according to the present invention has very excellent substrate specificity to kallikreins and good solubility in water or biological test solutions. The present substrate is therefore useful for measuring the concentration of kallikrein in urine for the diagnosis of hypertension and other diseases caused by the lowering of the concentration of kallikrein.
Abstract: When trifluoroethyl methacrylate, hexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate, pentafluoro-n-propyl methacrylate and/or pentafluoro-n-butyl methacrylate which are fluorine-containing monomers, are added to a conventional monomer mixture for producing a soft contact lens, the resulting soft contact lens has the same optical properties and elasticity as conventional soft contact lenses have, and is very superior to the conventional ones in resistance to deposit and in shape stability.
Abstract: A total artifical heart prosthesis having a body defining a right ventricle chamber and a left ventricle chamber each provided with an inlet valve and outlet valve, as well as with a flexible membrane dividing each ventricle chamber into a blood-receiving compartment or ventricle proper, and a cardiac function control compartment, in which artificial heart said membranes are urged by a ferromagnetic fluid. Arranged to cooperate with the membranes are electric windings which create magnetic fields producing a sought displacement of the membrane-urging ferromagnetic fluid, i.e. of the membranes themselves. A means is provided for driving the membranes as desired and for powering the electric windings in order to generate the magnetic field.
Abstract: A stuffed animal having an inner body covered by a loosely connected enlarged outer skin permitting adjustment of the folds therein for changing the appearance and/or expression of the stuffed animal by external manipulation.
Abstract: A vertical type screening machine for granular material comprises a housing. A rotary drum assembly is rotatably mounted within the housing and comprises a drum having a substantially vertical rotary axis and a helical blade helically wound around a circumferential surface of the drum. A cylindrical screen member disposed between the drum assembly and the housing cooperates with a peripheral wall of the housing to define therebetween a first chamber and cooperates with the circumferential surface of the drum to define therebetween a second chamber. The granular material to be screened is introduced into the top of the second chamber. Upon the rotation of the drum assemby, the granular material introduced into the top of the second chamber is moved toward the bottom of the second chamber by the helical blade and due to gravity.
Abstract: A shaft and pulley assembly for a blower having a scroll housing containing an impeller utilizes a square section shaft having a pulley retained thereon, an impeller having a hub with inner surfaces which lie in face-to-face contiguity with the shaft, a pair of adaptors having inner surfaces which also lie in face-to-face contiguity with the shaft and having curved external surfaces which support the adaptors from bearings which are themselves carried in bearing housings which are fixed with respect to the scroll housing, at least one of the adaptors having latches thereon which retain its said bearing against displacement.

Abstract: N-substituted secondary monoallylamine salts can be easily polymerized in a polar solvent by using as catalyst a water-soluble radical initiator containing azo group in the molecule, and polymers with a high degree of polymerization can be obtained therefrom in a high yield.
Abstract: A controlling method for pulse application to an actuator using a digital controller.A controlling method of an actuator, wherein a deviation is obtained from a command value and its feedback value, the absolute value of said deviation is determined whether it is larger than the minimum reference deviation corresponding to the dead zone, and only when the absolute value of the deviation is larger than the minimum reference deviation, the actuator is driven by a pulse having an application period proportional to the absolute value of the deviation plus a minimum application period stored in the memory of the digital controller. The minimum application period stored in the memory is increased or decreased and renewed depending on the judgement whether the movement volume of the actuator at each pulse application was under, proper or over.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for converting a heavy hydrocarbon oil feedstock to produce a high yield of lower-boiling hydrocarbons, wherein a residuum fraction of the effluent from a hydrogen donor diluent hydrocracking reactor is deasphalted using a low-boiling solvent and at least the highest-boiling fraction of the deasphalted oil is recycled to the hydrogen diluent hydrocracking zone.
Abstract: Methanol is made in a liquid-phase methanol reactor by entraining a methanol-forming catalyst in an inert liquid and contacting said entrained catalyst with a synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Abstract: A belt connector device for connecting opposite end portions of a belt to each other to form an endless belt assembly for use in belt type delivery apparatus comprises a mounting assembly which includes a pair of opposed, but spaced side wall members. First and second rollers are rotatably supported by the side wall members and cooperate with each other to define therebetween a gap in substantially parallel to respective axes of the first and second rollers. A drive device is operative to drivingly rotate the first roller to forcibly move, through the gap, the belt opposite end portions received in the gap with the belt opposite end portions being contact with each other in face to face relation, while clamping the belt opposite end portions between the first and second rollers, until the tension applied to the belt reaches a desired value.
Abstract: The invention relates to a new process for producing titanium IV and zirconium IV pyrophosphates, certain of which are new compounds, and their uses. The pyrophosphates are prepared by reacting a metal tetraester with phosphorus pentoxide, with or without the addition of an hydroxyl compound, such as an alcohol or a phenol. Depending on the molar ratio of the components, the compounds produced may contain cyclic or straight chain pyrophosphate groups and alkoxy groups attached to the metallic ion. In addition to forming new compounds, the process of the invention produces the desired products without difficult-to-separate by-products.
Abstract: An electrical isolator has an insulated housing with input and output conductors (1, 2) therein. A spring contact (6) is mounted within the housing for movement between open and closed positions. An insulating shroud (15) fully shields that part of the bridging contact accessible through an access opening of the housing. Manually operable pressure applying structure may be operated when the bridging contact is in the closed position to control that contact between a tightened condition applying pressure between the bridging contact and the conductors without the use of springs, and a free condition wherein the contact pressure is reduced. An interlock assembly prevents engagement and disengagement of the operating member with the pressure applying structure unless the bridging contact is located in either the closed or open position.
