  • Patent number: 4399771
Abstract: A pet door assembly for mounting over an opening includes a box containing a pivot arranged to be positioned beside the opening and such as to extend perpendicularly to the plane of the opening, and a door mounted on the pivot so as to be movable in its own plane between positions in which it opens and closes the opening. A rotary electric drive device such as a rotary solenoid are provided for swivelling the door between the open and closed positions, and a sensing device is provided which is operable by a pet for causing actuation of the drive device to open the door. Preferably, a tunnel is provided by tubular members which are separated by a gap in which the door can move, and weather stripping may be provided between the door and the adjacent ends of the tunnel members. For better insulation, the door may comprise 2 spaced apart planar members which are mounted to move together.

  • Patent number: 4399381
Abstract: In a homopolar dynamoelectric machine in which a magnetic flux moves across a generally cylindrical clearance space between the stator and rotor, counterproductive magnetic fields produced by axial electric currents are avoided by providing, on the mutually confronting surfaces of the stator and rotor, nonmagnetic electrical conductors which are electrically insulated from the magnetic portions of the stator and rotor. The conductors are connected together electrically by contacts, providing an electrically conductive loop which encloses no magnetic members. Leads from the electrically conductive loop may be connected to an external circuit. The electrical conductors in one embodiment are of solid cylindrical shape, and in other embodiments are formed of spaced bars as in a squirrel cage. When spaced bars are used, the bars on one member are axially oriented and the bars on the other member are arranged in two sets which are equally but oppositely inclined to the machine axis.

  • Patent number: 4396559
Abstract: This vapor-liquid contact apparatus, suitable for use in fractionating tower sections, includes a plurality of grids which are arranged in a vertical stack. Each grid is formed of a plurality of parallel, horizontal elongated segments; and, the longitudinal axes of the segments are angularly turned relative to the segment axes in the grid therebeneath. Each segment has an upstanding flange which supports a downflowing film of liquid, and a trough portion for receiving liquid which has flowed from the flange. The trough portion is provided with liquid drain openings which are located to release liquid directly onto contacting upper edges of the flanges of the next lower grid. A plurality of connector portions, integral with and bent outwardly from the flange portions, are spot welded to the trough portions to interconnect these elements. The gas flows upwardly through openings which are provided between the flanges and troughs of the segments.

  • Patent number: 4395231
Abstract: In a pass-through sintering furnace for sintering a succession of ceramic tubes fed lengthwise through the furnace and rotated as they pass through the furnace, the tubes, when heated in the furnace, are kept apart by pushing each tube into the furnace at one end and pulling it out from the other end. The pulling speed is less than the pushing speed to ensure uniform firing throughout the length of the tube, allowing for shrinkage as the tube is fired, but is sufficient to hold the pulled tube clear of the next following tube so as to obviate any pushing against the end of a hot tube.

  • Patent number: 4394798
Abstract: A wheel alignment measuring apparatus of the invention has angle measuring instruments joined up with the input of an electronic signal processing unit. A first and a second angle measuring instrument (1, 2) are placed on a nearside and on an offside front wheel support turntable respectively for sending in each case a signal representative of the steering angle of the front wheels to the signal processing unit. The processing unit calculates therefrom the steering difference angle. A third and a fourth and furthermore a fifth and a sixth angle measuring instrument are so placed in the one case on the nearside and in the other case on the offside front wheel that by way of the signal processing unit on the footing of changes in the output signals of the first and the third and on the other hand of the second and fourth angle measuring instruments the caster of the nearside and of the offside front wheels may be calculated.

  • Patent number: 4394256
Abstract: An apparatus for separating debris from spent abrasive in an abrasive blasting apparatus in which the debris and spent abrasive are recirculated from a blast zone at high velocity along a recirculation chamber includes means for receiving debris and spent abrasive from the recirculation chamber and allowing a quantity of the debris and spent abrasive to collect thereby forming a pile having a face exposed to incoming debris and spent abrasive. The pile has an angle of repose, whereby additional incoming debris and sent abrasive fall down the face to form a substantially unobstructed, vertical, uniform curtain of falling debris and spent abrasive. Means for providing a stream of fluid through the recirculation chamber are provided. Means having first and second openings are provided for drawing off the stream of fluid, which is divided into portions, from the recirculation chamber.

  • Patent number: 4387867
Abstract: A flying craft has a supporting element with an opening in it. A driving unit with a propeller drives air downwardly through the opening. Vanes mounted on the driving unit break up the circular component of the air velocity and also counteract the torque on the driving unit. The downwardly moving air is formed into a laminar air stream by a second set of vanes which are connected to the supporting element for rotation therewith. The pitch of the vanes can be adjusted. Adjustment of the pitch of the second set of vanes may cause the supporting element to rotate and give the craft a gyroscopic stability. The craft is tiltable for maneuvering purposes.
