  • Patent number: 5400762
Abstract: A method is provided for checking the function of a fuel composition sensor and for learning the percent alcohol content of a fuel used in a motor vehicle capable of operating on more than one type of fuel, as an alternative to a fuel composition sensor. The present invention improves the reliability of a motor vehicle utilizing a fuel composition sensor by allowing vehicle operation to continue uninterrupted, such as when a short or open condition exists within the sensor. The method first determines whether conditions are such that the percent alcohol content of a fuel should be "learned". If conditions are appropriated, then necessary engine operating conditions are first initialized. The oxygen sensor output signal is checked to determine whether the engine is operating too rich or lean. The value of percent alcohol content stored in the engine control unit's memory is modified in the direction of stoichiometric engine operation.

  • Patent number: 5320682
Abstract: A method is provided for cleaning paint residue from the walls of an enclosed chamber and providing for reclamation of the cleaning solution. The method includes providing a regulated flow of cleaning solution under pressure to a hand held scrubbing apparatus for removing paint residue from the wall surface. The cleaning solution with the paint residue entrained therein drips down the walls and is collected in a series of troughs lining the perimeter of the paint booth. Taking advantage of gravity, the liquid drains from the troughs into a temporary storage container located below the paint booth. The liquid may then be pumped into a permanent storage container that could be in a remote location. The liquid is now available for reclamation.

  • Patent number: 5307327
Abstract: Most motor vehicles contain an audio such as a radio, cassette player or compact disc player. A housing generally having a box-like shape and an open end surround the actual hardware. A cover fits over the open end of the housing. The present invention provides a positive means for attaching and holding the front cover to the housing. A lip section of the cover is tightly held between upper and lower tabs integral with the housing. The interference fit created by the tabs tends to reduce the possibility of annoying rattling or buzzing sounds during vehicle operation due to a loose fit of the cover onto the housing.

  • Patent number: 5249559
Abstract: Many internal combustion engines have an auxiliary means for controlling airflow into the engine at idle, such as an Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) motor to compensate for changing load requirements. A method is disclosed for controlling the AIS motor and in turn engine idle speed to compensate for changing loads due to the operation of the air conditioner. The method recognizes the relationship between ambient temperature and pressures generated within the air conditioning compressor and the compensation necessary to maintain a smooth idle speed. The method also utilizes adaptive learning to relate a "looked up" of the air conditioner to the current value of auxiliary air flow required by a warmed up engine.
