  • Patent number: 3956720
Abstract: An instrument for measuring and testing wet cell storage battery charge levels including the total charge level and the charge level of individual cells. The instrument has an autopolarity feature and utilizes a diode rectifier circuit with a DC voltmeter connected across the terminals. Separate circuits may be selected to provide two voltage readout scales including a scale for measuring the total charge level and a scale for measuring the charge of individual cells. The device has unique conductive probes at the ends of the test leads, the probes being adapted for immersion in the electrolyte of the cells in order to measure the charge level of individual cells. The probes are also used to provide electrical contact across the battery terminals for the total charge test. The probes are elongated steel rods coated with cadmium plating and having the outer ends ground off so that a roughened steel end surface is exposed to the electrolyte.

  • Patent number: 3949392
Abstract: The present invention is a display apparatus having a display surface formed by an array of contiguous elements which are rotatable about vertical shafts to display a surface of contrasting appearance to the background appearance of the display surface thereby forming a mosaic displaying information. A column of solenoid operated actuator devices is driven along the back of the display surface and selected devices operate to rotate selected ones of the elements in each vertical shaft. The elements have a generally cubic overall shape with their vertical surfaces being cylindrically concave to allow rotation of an element without causing movement of a contiguous element. The bottom surfaces of the elements are grooved and arranged so as to co-operate with fixed horizontal members to provide an indexing arrangement. In addition, vertically extending channels communicate with the bore of each element to allow rain water to flow freely down the display surface.

  • Patent number: 3940628
Abstract: Systems, apparatus and methods are disclosed for disposing of radioactive waste materials by placing them into a container such as a steel drum, together with cement or other solidifying agent and water or other suitable liquid in amounts sufficient to provide eventually a solidified mixture of predetermined amounts of cement or other solidifying agent and radioactive material, closing the drum, agitating the mixture in the drum for mixing the contents, and then storing the drum for at least a period of time sufficient to permit partial decay of radioactive materials or to await available time for shipment. Also disclosed are remotely controlled apparatus for handling both empty and filled drums, for placing the drums in and removing drums from enclosed drumming equipment where they have been filled and agitated, for accurately placing the drums containing radioactive material in storage, and for removing the drums from storage and loading them on a vehicle for transportation.

  • Patent number: 3940577
Abstract: A remote control method and apparatus for use in association with a movable carriage illustrated as a transfer car for handling radioactive materials. The car has a self-contained drive motor energized from a remote power source, and travels in forward and reverse directions in a predetermined path between at least two predetermined operating stations in a closed operating space defined by protective walls. The travel of the car in both directions is automatically halted by means of limit switch means located outside the closed space, to de-energize the power source for the drive motor. A rotary shaft extending through a wall of the enclosed space is rotated in one direction in response to forward travel of the car and in the opposite direction in response to the reverse travel of the car. An adjustable switch means is located on the outside of the chamber wall to halt the car at the predetermined limit position.

  • Patent number: 3938744
Abstract: A progressing cavity, positive displacement rotary pump assembly for fluid or semi-fluid material. The assembly includes a rotary shaft with an associated drive motor and pump components including a tubular stator with an interior helical surface and an orbital rotor within the stator operably connected to the shaft and having an exterior helical surface. The helical rotor surface has one more thread than the helical stator surface which it engages, to define sealed pumping cavities that advance axially as the rotor rotates and orbits within the stator. The rotor is coupled to the shaft by a flexible torque tube with one end connected to the shaft and the other connected to an end of the rotor to transmit driving torque to the rotor and to flex sufficiently to accommodate orbital movement of the rotor.

  • Patent number: 3931942
Abstract: A dual-function aircraft is disclosed having a fuselage shaped like an airfoil, a series of airfoils of shorter chord length arranged in tandem and disposed below the fuselage to provide additional aerodynamic lift, and a downwardly movable rear wall and a pivoted forward airfoil which forms a plenum chamber under the fuselage and produce a cushion of air during the ground mode. Transition from the ground effect mode to the flight mode is made in flight by simultaneously lowering the tandem of airfoils, lifting the rear wall and altering the angle of attack of the forward airfoil.
