  • Patent number: 6849323
Abstract: A composite panel waffle stiffener has fabric plies pre-cut to a selected pattern and laid on a tool having a waffle configuration. The plies overlap each other to maintain continuity of the structure. The resulting waffle stiffener is then bonded to a panel requiring stiffening. The stiffener is flexible and may be bonded to curved panels. Holes in the stiffener allow access to the volume between the stiffener and the panel for minimizing volume loss within, for example, a wing structure containing fuel and for ventilating air or moisture trapped in the volume.

  • Patent number: 6849150
Abstract: A system and method for forming structural assemblies with 3-D woven joint pre-forms. The method of the present invention forms complex structural assemblies with pre-formed structures. Adhesive is applied between the preformed structures and uncured 3-D woven textile pre-forms. Then together the preformed structures and uncured resin impregnated 3-D woven textile are cured with heat and/or pressure to form the larger complex structural assemblies.

  • Patent number: 6846222
Abstract: An apparatus and method of lapping of rows of magnetic recording heads uses multiple fluid-filled ports with variable pressure against a flexible adhesive tape to secure to and support the row. The tape provides the necessary tangential restraining force to drag the workpiece along a lapping plate. The multiple ports beneath the tape provide the necessary normal force to press the workpiece against the lapping plate to allow lapping to occur. The amount of material removal from the row is varied by adjusting the pressure in the ports such that higher pressure is applied to those heads with higher stripe height, and lower pressure is applied to recording heads with lower stripe height. To set or adjust the port pressures, measurements of the read sensor resistance are taken to calculate the stripe height. The stripe height is roughly proportional to the reciprocal of resistance.

  • Patent number: 6843298
Abstract: An automatic thermal debonding tool removes slider rows from a stainless steel processing fixture. The tool uses a bimodal pitch adjustment and a mechanical row detainment mechanism to remove the rows from the fixture. The tool allow full control of all critical process parameters such as accurate and repeatable row placement; controlled temperature and heat flow; controlled mechanical removal pressure; temporal control and variability; clean and contaminant-free working area; and full electrostatic discharge grounding and compatible materials. The bimodal pitch adjustment feature allows for continual, high-speed removal of the ceramic rows from the fixture after an automated heating cycle is complete. As the rows are removed, they are accurately placed into the detainment mechanism for the next process step.

  • Patent number: 6840323
Abstract: A subsea wellhead assembly has a tubing hanger with a tubing annulus passage and a production passage. A metal-sealing shuttle valve is mounted in the tubing hanger for blocking upward flow through the tubing annulus passage. The shuttle valve has a retention mechanism that prevents the shuttle from moving to the open position when fluid pressure is applied from above. The retention mechanism is released by the running tool after testing has been completed, causing the shuttle to close. The tree has an engaging member that can be stroked downward into the tubing hanger annulus passage to move the shuttle valve to the open position for communicating with the annulus.

  • Patent number: 6835261
Abstract: A method for using a three-dimensional, woven preform to assemble two components. The woven preform is infused with an adhesive, and at least one surface of the preform is bonded to at least one surface of one of the components using the adhesive within the preform. The other of the components is attached to the preform, and this may occur with fasteners after the adhesive is cured or by bonding the second component to the preform with the adhesive. Use of an adhesive, instead of a resin, creates a stronger joint, especially with fiber-reinforcement of the adhesive. The thickness of the compressible, three-dimensional weave provides for a larger dimensional tolerance at each bond line.

  • Patent number: 6830012
Abstract: An animal collar has a band with an inner layer and an outer layer. A pair of screws extend through and protrude from the outer layer for securing to a control unit that supplies an electrical signal upon the occurrence of a selected event. A pair of conductive leads extends from the screws in opposite directions between the inner and outer layers. A threaded receptacle is located at the electrode end of each lead. An electrode extends through a hole in the inner layer and engages the threaded receptacle.

  • Patent number: 6829969
Abstract: A feed mechanism sheet material sequentially on demand to a take-up mechanism of processing machinery. The feed mechanism has a feed table with a gate. Sheets may be stacked against the gate, which allows only the lowermost sheet to pass therebeneath. Rollers within the surface of the rotatably driven to advance the lowermost sheet beneath the gate to the take-up mechanism. A restraining device prevents freewheeling over run of the rollers. The sheets may be longer in length than the circumference of a tool-carrying roll set used to process the sheet. The difference is accommodated by transferring sheet feed through the nip between the tool set and a separate servo-controlled drive upstream of the nip.

  • Patent number: 6830607
Abstract: A slurry tray and a method for removing residual vinyl chloride monomer from a polyvinylchloride resin slurry with reduced discoloration of the polyvinylchloride resin is provided. The slurry tray preferably includes partitioned channels that cause the slurry to flow at a velocity that maintains solids contained with the slurry in a liquid suspension and weirs contains holes to allow solids trapped at the bottom of the weir to flow continuously downward to a bottom of the plate tower for removal from the tower. The method preferably includes supplying the slurry towards the top of the tower and a vapor towards the bottom of the tower. The slurry descends the tower, while the steam simultaneously ascends the tower, both through directional valves. The solids trapped upon the surface of the trays travel down the tower through the holes within the weirs for removal from the tower.

  • Patent number: 6827336
Abstract: A concrete fencing system uses a pair of end posts to support a pair of rails, which support a plurality of panels. The end posts and rails have rectangular cross-sections. Each end post has a blind hole and a notch, and each rail has a longitudinal slot. One section of the fencing system is constructed by setting a pair of the end posts in the ground. A lower rail is mounted between the lower ends of the end posts in their blind holes with its slot facing upward. An upper rail is mounted between the upper ends of the end posts in their notches with its slot facing downward. A set of the panels are placed between the end posts and seated in the slots of the rails to form a wall. No additional mechanical fasteners are required to join any of these components.

  • Patent number: 6823938
Abstract: A tool is used for installing a string of casing in a well. The casing is supported by a casing hanger that lands on a landing shoulder of the wellhead assembly. A running mechanism is releasably secured to the casing hanger for landing the casing hanger and setting a casing hanger seal. A profile is formed in the wellhead assembly above the landing shoulder. The tool includes a body having an upper portion and a lower portion, the lower portion being secured to the running mechanism. A mandrel is mounted to the body for axial movement relative to the body, the mandrel having a threaded upper end for securing to a running string of conduit. A cam surface is formed on the mandrel. A plurality of dogs are mounted to the upper portion of the body in sliding engagement with the cam surface for movement in response to axial movement of the mandrel into engagement with the profile. While in the engaged position, the dogs resist upward movement of the casing hanger during cementing of the string of casing.
