Abstract: Input signals of each frame are encoded by mapping the signals onto a coordinate system dictated by the symbols of the previous frame, and symbols from a constellation are selected based on the results of such mapping. Received signals are detected by preprocessing the signals detected at each antenna with signals detected by the antenna at the immediately previous frame, and then applied to a maximum likelihood detector circuit, followed by an inverse mapping circuit.
Abstract: A training sequence is created for space-time diversity arrangement, having any training sequence length, while limiting the training sequence to a standard constellation. Given a number of channel unknowns that need to be estimated, L, a training sequence can be creates that yields minimum means squared estimation error for lengths Nt=kNPRUS+L?1, for any positive integer k?1, where NPRUS is a selected perfect roots-of-unity sequence (PRUS) of length N. The training sequence is created by concatenating k of the length N perfect roots-of-unity sequences, followed by L?1 initial symbols of that same PRUS. Good training sequences can be created for lengths Nt that cannot be obtained through the above method by concatenating a requisite number of symbols found through an exhaustive search.

Abstract: A system for understanding entries, such as speech, develops a classifier by employing prior knowledge with which a given corpus of training entries is enlarged threefold. Abstract: A sound-capturing arrangement uses a set of directional microphones that lie approximately on a sphere having a diameter of 0.9 ms sound travel, which approximates the inter-aural time delay. Advantageously, one directional microphone points upward, one directional microphone points downward, and the odd number of microphones are arranged relatively evenly in the horizontal plane. On one embodiment, the signals from the microphones that point upward and downward are combined with the signals of the horizontal microphones before the signals of the horizontal microphones are transmitted or recorded.
Abstract: A storage system for holding entertainment-content storage devices such as CDs comprises one or more pages that are combined to form a book of pages, where each of the pages is adapted to store a plurality of such storage device, as well as associated descriptive matter media, such as pictures booklets, etc. More particularly, at least one side of each page includes a plurality of distinct places for inserting and, thereby storing, the storage devices, and physically proximate means for storing descriptive matter media. In one embodiment, for example, the places for inserting and storing storage devices in each page comprises four generally circular cavities having their centers lying on a circle that is centered on a page, and a covering that partially covers the circular cavities. Each circular cavity is dimensioned to hold a CD (or DVD) and the partial covering of the circular cavity is adapted to insure that a CD will rest securely in the circular cavity.
Abstract: An arrangement where a policy manager automatically generates configuration file updates for the routers in the network, as necessary, sends those updates to the appropriate routers, and causes the routers to install the configuration file updates in real-time. The automatic generation of configuration file updates is carried out in response to information that is delivered to the policy manager from a traffic measurement and flow analysis system that replaces the prior art analyzer system. The information that is generated by the traffic measurement and flow analysis system is sensitive to thresholds that the policy manager installs in the traffic measurement and flow analysis system.

Abstract: A non-uniform filter bank is created by joining sections of oversampled uniform filter bands that are based on complex exponential modulation (as opposed to cosine modulation). Each filter bank handles a given, non-overlapping frequency band. The bands are not of uniform bandwidth, and the filters of different banks have different bandwidths. The frequency bands of the different filter banks cover the frequency of interest with gaps in the neighborhoods of the filter band edges. A set of transition filters fills those gaps.
Abstract: An arrangement where connections between a terminal and a switch are effected through a serial connection of shared, overloadable, resources, and where conventionally each of the resources has a given number of communication channels, provides for effective congestion control by converting one or more of the communications channels to one or more groups of enhanced signaling channels. The congestion control is effected by employing the enhanced signaling channels, which can carry audible signals, to determine whether to set up requested calls, based on a preselected congestion control process.

Abstract: An enhanced system is achieved by allowing bookmarks which can specify that the stream of bits that follow corresponds to phonemes and a plurality of prosody information, including duration information, that is specified for times within the duration of the phonemes. Illustratively, such a stream comprises a flag to enable a duration flag, a flag to enable a pitch contour flag, a flag to enable an energy contour flag, a specification of the number of phonemes that follow, and, for each phoneme, one or more sets of specific prosody information that relates to the phoneme, such as a set of pitch values and their durations.

Abstract: Congestion problems in networks are alleviated with a method that works toward insuring that unused capacity will always exist in elements of a network that are resources which are shared by a plurality of users and which, consequently, can be overloaded. In response to each request to establish a connection over a path in the network, pursuant to a predetermined algorithm the method services the request, declines to service the request, or services the request after dropping an established connection. In one embodiment, when unused capacity on the path is above a first preselected level, all requests are serviced. When unused capacity falls below a second preselected threshold, no requests are serviced. When unused capacity is between the first and second thresholds, an existing data connection is dropped if a requested connection is a voice connection and the number of existing data connections exceeds a preselected threshold.
Abstract: An arrangement comprising a master unit and one or more slave units, where the master sends out bursts, at specified intervals, in a frequency hopping manner, with each burst being at a different frequency. The slave responds with acknowledgements, and the signal strengths of the acknowledgments are used to select one or more of the acknowledgments as the signals used for distance, or range, estimation. Advantageously, the durations of the intervals are fairly long during normal operation, and short at times when certain conditions occur, such as loss of communication or when accurate range estimation is required. Also, the slave is adapted to sleep while it is not expecting a burst transmission from the master, thereby saving power. The frequency hopping sequencing is preferably pseudo random, with a different sequencing of the same set of frequencies at different modes of operation.
Abstract: An arrangement provides a work environment to a remote user who is logged-in as a member of an enterprise, which work environment includes both a telecommunication capability and a data processing capability, and both are concurrently associated with the logged-in user. The data processing capability is restricted to the user obtaining only views of files, rather than the files themselves, and all file processing that can potentially store data is restricted to applications that can store files only in a range of locations specified by the enterprise.

Abstract: A multi-input, multi-output pre-filter improves operation of a multi-input receiver by shortening the effective memory of the channel with a set of FIR filters. The coefficients of these FIR filters can be fashioned to provide a variety of controls by the designer, for example, the value of the effective memory.
Abstract: Better reproduction of sound is achieved analyzing audio signals for perceptual soundfield imaging cues, and applying appropriate portions of the audio signal to a directional speaker and to a diffusing speaker, based on the analyzed audio signals. Specifically, the audio signal is applied to a critical band filter bank, and at the higher frequencies a detector detects leading edges in the signal's envelope. Concurrently, the audio signal is applied to a delay element followed by a reconstruction filter bank. The output of each filter in the reconstruction filter bank is applied to a one-input/two-outputs soft switch (single pole, double throw) that is controlled by one or more of the detectors. One output of the switch is applied to a directional speaker, and the other output of the switch is applied to a diffusing speaker.

Abstract: A packet transmission arrangement maintains a certain minimum bandwidth for a call. When a silence period is detected, the bandwidth that is allocated to the call is reduced. When a speech period is detected, the reduced bandwidth remains in force, unless there is spare capacity, in which case a full measure of bandwidth is allocated to the call.
