    Abstract: A class of polycyclic aromatic compounds containing at least two fused rings, is used to produce very bright liquid or plastic scintillators. When a member of this class, such as pyrene, is added at high concentration to a liquid or polymeric organic solvent, scintillation light output may be increased by between 40 and 100% as compared to existing commercial scintillating compositions. These new bright scintillator compositions can be used in scintillating optical fibers and plates made therefrom. These new scintillating optical fiber plates are particularly useful for diagnostic medical X-ray detection, and superior spatial resolution particle detection and measurement of high energy particles and radiation.

    Abstract: A new class of proton transfer, benzazole, fluorescent compounds is composed of a 2-benzazolyl moiety covalently bonded to an aromatic fused ring heterocyclic moiety. The 2-benzazolyl moiety may be a 2-benzoxazolyl, 2-benzothiazolyl, or 2-benzimidazolyl. The aromatic fused ring heterocyclic moiety may be a 3-dibenzofuranyl or 3-dibenzothiophenyl each substituted at the 2 position with a proton donating group, or a 2-carbazolyl substituted at the 3 position with a proton donating group. The proton donating group may be hydroxy, sulfonamido, carbonamido, and the like, and preferably is hydroxy. The fluors are soluble in organic matrix materials such as solvents, monomers, resins, polymers, and the like. The UV-excited fluors emit short-lived fluorescence at .gtoreq.520 nm and may be used in the manufacture of fluorescent coatings, objects, scintillators, light sources and the like.

    Abstract: A novel transfer element for protecting, graphic arts images is disclosed. The transfer element consists essentially of, a temporary carrier layer, a substantially silane-free protective layer, and an adhesive layer permanently adhered to the protective layer. In particular, the temporary carrier layer is a polymeric sheet material, a foraminous sheet material, or composites thereof; and the protective layer comprises a cross-linked cellulose ester. When the transfer element of this invention is used, the temporary carrier layer is removed, as the final step, from the protective layer which remains substantially intact. The transfer element is useful in manufacturing protected images of all sizes and is particularly suited to protecting large format images such as billboards.
