  • Patent number: 7395324
Abstract: In various embodiments of the invention, a server monitors a network for a startup message from a client computer as appropriate. The server may include a computer application that generates configuration instructions in response to commands from an administrator and/or information obtained from a client computer. The instructions may be in the form of scripts, data, objects, or the like. The instructions may be passed to the client computer, which may execute various administrative functions as directed. In exemplary embodiments, the instructions may command direct placement, verification and/or replacement of files, directory entries, BIOS attributes or other characterisitics of the client computer.

  • Patent number: 6588949
Abstract: A hermetically sealed photonic device submount includes a photonic device mounted on a substrate material and sealed in a flexible hermetic seal. In one configuration, the photonic device is configured to emit or to receive light through the substrate material. In this configuration, the photonic device is covered with an adhesive layer and a metal layer deposited onto the adhesive layer. In another configuration, the photonic device is configured to emit or to receive light in a direction substantially vertically upward from the substrate material. In this configuration, a cover is placed over the photonic device, then the cover is hermetically sealed to the substrate material with an adhesive layer and a metal layer depositd onto the adhesive layer. In both configurations, the photonic device submounts are hermetically sealed according to various aspects of the present invention on the substrate material without using a separate package.

  • Patent number: 5892866
Abstract: The present invention is an optical transmission system comprising an optical source, a first lens and a second lens, a multimode optical waveguide, and a phase-only filter. The optical source generates an optical signal having a predetermined wavelength which is received by the first lens. The signal is then sent from the first lens through the phase-only filter and then to the second lens. The second lens then focuses the signal into the multimode optical waveguide. The multimode optical waveguide has predetermined dimensions and has multiple modes. The phase-only filter excites a plurality of modes in the optical waveguide to approximate equilibrium modal power distribution as the optical signal is received into the optical waveguide.

  • Patent number: 5717474
Abstract: A multi-domain halftone gray scale active matrix liquid crystal display utilizing a mono-gap configuration for achieving a very wide viewing angle at a low-cost. The substrate of the display has areas having a rub or an alignment of different directions from the direction of the rub or alignment in other adjacent areas. Each pixel of the gray scale matrix has a plurality of subpixels such that each subpixel turns on at a different voltage than that of the other subpixels. The areas involving different rubs or alignments on the substrates may be areas of pixels or subpixels. At least one compensating retardation layer is formed on the display. The technique of enabling the combining of multiple domains and compensation with halftone grayscale pixels results in a display having significantly wider viewing angles than either a multi-domain display or a halftone grayscale display, whether compensated for or not.

  • Patent number: 5646702
Abstract: A liquid crystal display having pixels illuminated by field emitter arrays. The field emitter arrays may be utilized to illuminate each pixel individually or to be a backlight lamp to illuminate the whole display, whether monochrome or color. A field emitter array back-lighted liquid crystal displays, whether active matrix or passive, provide greater compactness, higher luminous efficiency, more brightness, and longer lifetime than a fluorescent lamp. Field-emitter arrays may also provide light in various colors for the liquid crystal display thereby eliminating the need for color filters which result in duller colors than that of field emitter arrays. Each color filter absorbs two-thirds of the light that it receives. A color filter liquid crystal color display exhibits colors that have diminished chromaticity and purity in comparison to those of a field emitter array liquid crystal display.
