Patent number: 7520688Abstract: A mounting arrangement and/or stand for supporting a print feed mechanism relative to a printer. The mounting arrangement includes first and second support members defining first and second mating surfaces, respectively. The first support member is adapted to support the print feed mechanism and the second support member is adapted to support the first support member. Furthermore, the first and second mating surfaces define a mating interface or plane which is inclined relative to a horizontal plane. The relative position of the first and second support members is maintained by a means for coupling the first and second segments along the inclined mating plane. The coupling means is, furthermore, operative to selectively position the first support member relative to the second support member so as to separate the print feed mechanism segment from the printer by a fixed separation distance.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2006Date of Patent: April 21, 2009Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: David E. Patent number: 7516950Abstract: A cut sheet feeder for feeding stacked sheets of material including a feed support deck defining a planar surface for supporting the stacked sheet material and a transport deck defining an inclined surface relative to the planar surface of the feed support deck. The inclined surface is operative to transport additional sheet material to the feed support deck and produce a cantilevered sheet material delivery profile. Furthermore, a rotating element is employed to engage a surface of the stacked sheet material, and separate a single sheet from other sheet material supported by the feed support deck. The cantilevered delivery profile reduces the weight acting on the stacked material, minimizes the friction developed between individual sheets of material and facilitates separation of the sheets by the rotating element. A platen structure may also be employed to bear against the stacked sheet material to ensure reliable sheet material run out.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2006Date of Patent: April 14, 2009Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Kevin Herde, Thomas Nguyen, Egbert E. Patent number: 7502126Abstract: A system for tracking the spatial position/motion of an article conveyed along a feed path. The system comprises a reflective surface disposed along the feed path of the article and an optical scanning device disposed remotely from the reflective surface such that the moving article is interposed therebetween. The optical scanning device is operative to (i) transmit light energy along a length of the reflective surface, (ii) receive light energy returned from the reflective surface and (iii) determine the spatial position of the article based upon a condition of the optical path, i.e., whether the optical path is present or interrupted. A break in the optical path is sensed by the optical scanning device and interpreted by the signal processor to determine the spatial position/motion of the moving article.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2005Date of Patent: March 10, 2009Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Henson C. Patent number: 7497435Abstract: A backing plate support system is provided for a mailpiece feeder mechanism wherein mailpieces are conveyed vertically, on-edge along a transport deck to a transfer station for subsequent sortation and delivery. The backing plate support system includes a guide track disposed along and adjacent to the transport deck and a plurality of backing plates each having a guide support fitting at its base. The guide support fitting engages the guide track and supports the backing plate in an orthogonal position relative to the transport deck. The backing plate support system, furthermore, includes an advancing belt disposed adjacent the guide track and adapted to be driven linearly along the transport deck and a mechanism for coupling each backing plate to the advancing belt. The mechanism facilitates relative movement of the backing support plate relative to the advancing belt in one direction while inhibiting relative motion thereof in an opposing direction.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2005Date of Patent: March 3, 2009Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: David P. Patent number: 7497438Abstract: A bottom stacker having a pair of slotted disks to receive incoming mail pieces one at a time from an input nip. The mail pieces are separately placed in the slots and carried by the rotation of the disks to a stack support in the stacker. The stack support is disposed at a small angle from the vertical axis so that the mail pieces in the stack are kept in the stack by gravity. When a new mail piece is carried in a slot toward the stack support, the lead edge of the mail piece is stopped by a stopping surface so as to disengage the mail piece from that slot. As the disks rotate further, part of the outer periphery of the disks moves the disengaged mail piece toward the stack so as to deposit the mail piece at the bottom of the stack.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2004Date of Patent: March 3, 2009Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Denis J. Patent number: 7219482Abstract: A method and system for selecting fold lines on a sheet to be inserted into a windowed envelope includes scanning the windowed envelope with a scanner to determine the location of the window on the envelope. The location of a data block on an insert to be inserted into the windowed envelope is also determined. The position of one or more of the fold lines on the sheet to be inserted is determined such that a data block printed in the determined location on the sheet will appear behind the envelope window when the sheet is folded in accordance with the determined fold line pattern and inserted into the windowed envelope. The efficiency and flexibility of the system can be enhanced by providing an operator with possible standard and nonstandard fold patterns that will enable proper insertion of the folded sheet into the envelope.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2006Date of Patent: May 22, 2007Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Denis J.
