    Abstract: Methods, systems, and related computer program products for processing and displaying computer-aided detection (CAD) results in conjunction with breast x-ray tomosynthesis data are described. For one preferred embodiment, as a user pages through a notional stack of tomosynthesis reconstructed slice images (Tr images), including a detection-containing Tr image on which a CAD marker is to be displayed at an identified coordinate location, one or more CAD proximity markers is displayed at that coordinate location on one or more neighboring Tr images. While not themselves indicative of CAD findings on their respective Tr images, the CAD proximity markers encourage user attention toward the coordinate location of the CAD detection marker of the detection-containing Tr image. Preferably, the CAD proximity markers are of noticeably different size from each other and from the CAD detection marker to promote their perception in the peripheral vision of the user during the paging process.

    Abstract: A system and method for processing mammographic data are described. The system includes a user input/output system adapted and configured to receive from a user a user-defined scanning protocol that identifies the laterality and view type for each mammographic film in a film case to be scanned. A storage system stores the user-defined scanning protocol for subsequent use in scanning film cases. A scanning system scans film cases and generates digitized versions of each mammographic film. A processor then assigns laterality and view types to the digitized versions of the mammographic film according to the user-defined scanning protocol. The system also receives user alterations to stored scanning protocols. The system can also re-assigns a case scanned according to one scanning protocol to another scanning protocol in response to a user's instruction to do so.

    Abstract: Managing a patient worklist in a radiology environment is described, the patient worklist identifying a plurality of medical imaging cases to be reviewed at a radiology review workstation. For each case, a set of CAD-computed metrics is received, the CAD-computed metrics being derived from an operation of a CAD processing algorithm on that case. According to a preferred embodiment, the cases in the patient worklist are sorted according to at least one of the CAD-computed metrics. The reviewing radiologist is provided with greater insight into, and control over, patient workflow at the radiology review workstation. Also described is a graphical user interface for easy user customization of the case sorting criteria. Examples of case sorting criteria include a number of CAD markers per case metric, a maximum suspiciousness metric, and an anatomical complexity metric.

    Abstract: Display and navigation for multiple computer-aided detection (CAD) detections is described. A medical image is displayed to a viewer, and a request is received to instantiate CAD-assisted viewing. A timewise presentation sequence for the CAD detections is automatically computed according to a predetermined sequencing criterion. For each CAD detection, an expanded presentation window is displayed for its associated location in the medical image, the expanded presentation windows being displayed according to the timewise presentation sequence. Also described is a navigational tool comprising a plot of an operating curve onto which a computed feature associated with the CAD algorithm can be mapped, the operating curve characterizing an application of the CAD algorithm to a reference database of mammographic cases having known diagnoses.

    Abstract: Facilitating viewer comparison of a plurality of medical images of at least one body part on a softcopy review workstation is described. First and second medical images are displayed such that the second medical image appears as a spatially registered underlay to the first medical image exposed through an aperture therein. The aperture comprises at least one edge that is viewer-manipulable in a back-and-forth manner so that the first and second medical images can be visually compared with minimal eye movement. For a temporal comparison embodiment, the first and second medical images comprise identical views of the same body part acquired at different times. For a cross-modality comparison embodiment, the first and second medical images are acquired substantially concurrently, or at different times, using different medical imaging modalities. For a bilateral comparison embodiment, the first and second images are corresponding views of two laterally corresponding body parts.

    Abstract: Numerical image processing based on a model of medical image acquisition of two or more medical images to provide grayscale registration is described. The grayscale registered temporal images may then be displayed for visual comparison and/or further processed by a computer-aided diagnosis system for detection of medical abnormalities therein. A parametric method includes spatially registering two images and performing gray scale registration of the images. A parametric transform model, e.g., analog to analog, digital to digital, analog to digital, or digital to analog model, is selected based on the image acquisition method(s) of the images, i.e., digital or analog/film. Gray scale registration involves generating a joint pixel value histogram from the two images, statistically fitting parameters of the transform model to the joint histogram, generating a lookup table, and using the lookup table to transform and register pixel values of one image to the pixel values of the other image.

    Abstract: A method, system, and method of doing business in a standards-based medical imaging environment is described in relation to the communication of computer-aided detection (CAD) results among devices, with one embodiment relating to the DICOM standard. CAD results are fixably integrated into the pixels of a secondary image derived from a source image, and the secondary image is transferred using a DICOM Secondary Capture Image Information Object Instance (SCI-IOI). The DICOM SCI-IOI is transferred to a viewing workstation, whereby a clinician can open, manipulate, and view the secondary image in a side-by-side comparison with the source image or derivative images thereof. Advantageously, CAD results are communicated to the clinician in a DICOM-conforming manner independent of whether the viewing workstation supports standard DICOM accommodations, such as CAD Structured Report Information Object Instances (CAD SR-IOIs), for the type of CAD results that need to be presented.

    Abstract: Simultaneous grayscale and geometric registration of images, such as mammograms, facilitates temporal comparison and enhances the speed and reliability of computer aided diagnosis (CAD) detection of medical abnormalities. The method generally includes optimizing a merit function, e.g., sum of squared errors, containing parameters associated with a transformation function for simultaneous geometric and grayscale registering of the images, the optimizing of the merit function being performed by determining optimal values of the parameters using data in the images and registering one image to the other by applying the geometric and grayscale transformation function using the optimal values of the parameters. The optimizing may be performed iteratively from coarse to fine resolutions using a modified Levenberg-Marquardt method for optimizing nonlinear parameters with linear regression for optimizing linear parameters.

    Abstract: A review workstation for facilitating interpretation of a medical image by a user is described. The review workstation comprises a display device displaying the medical image to the user, and an input device receiving a graphical identification of a region of interest (ROI) in the medical image that is interesting to the user. Responsive to the identification of the ROI, a content-based image comparison is performed between the ROI and a resource database, the resource database comprising a collection of resource images previously analyzed by human interpreters and textual information associated with those previous analyses. The content-based image comparison comprises identifying a subset of the resource images similar to the ROI with respect to a preselected set of computed features. The display device subsequently displays to the user at least one of the identified subset of resource images and its associated textual information simultaneously with the ROI.
