  • Patent number: 6162183
Abstract: A system to monitor respiration activity of a user and provide appropriate feedback to the user includes a respiration feedback monitor sized and configured to be worn by the user. In the depicted embodiment, respiration activity is measured with components including a retractable cord coupled to an optical distance measurement device. Feedback is typically provided using vibrations of certain duration and repetition. The system operates under various user selectable operational modes. Each operational mode is associated with particular respiration feedback criteria used to determine appropriate feedback for the user. The respiration feedback criteria is related to respiration rate levels and respiration depth associated with respiration activity level measured for the user. Distribution plots such as histograms associated with respiration measurement contribute to aspects of the feedback criteria and help establish other aspects of appropriate feedback.

  • Patent number: 6148131
Abstract: A method of manufacturing an optical fiber, whereby a fiber is drawn from a molten extremity of a preform and is subsequently subjected to a torque, thereby causing a portion of the fiber to be twisted about its longitudinal axis and to be endowed with a spin. The torque is applied by running the fiber between a pair of wheels which rotate in mutually opposite senses about two different rotational axes, each wheel having a peripheral curved surface, the wheels being thus arranged that the fiber runs substantially tangential to their curved surfaces and is pressed therebetween, the wheels being moved back and forth relative to one another in a direction substantially perpendicular to the fiber so as to cause the fiber to be rolled back and forth between their curved surfaces.

  • Patent number: 6146956
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for making a lateral PNP bipolar electronic device integrated monolithically on a semiconductor substrate together with other bipolar devices of the NPN type, said device being incorporated to an electrically insulated multilayer structure. The device includes a semiconductor substrate doped with impurities of the P type; a first buried layer doped with impurities of the N type to form a base region; and a second layer, overlying the first and having conductivity of the N type, to form an active area with opposite collector and emitter regions being formed in said active area and separated by a base channel region. The width of the base channel region is defined essentially by a contact opening formed above an oxide layer deposited over the base channel region. Advantageously, the contact opening is formed by shifting an emitter mask.

  • Patent number: 6092338
Abstract: A barrier operator moves a movable barrier using a motive source having a movable member, a station, and first and second flexible members. The station includes a drive system operatively coupled to the movable member of the motive source. The drive system includes input and output members. The first and second flexible members each have first and second ends and a portion extending from the station. The first ends of each flexible members are operatively coupled to the movable barrier and the second ends of each of the flexible members are operatively coupled to the output drive system member of the station. Aspects include the first and second flexible members being cable or wire. Other aspects include the output drive system member of the station being a spool. The drive system further includes a gear box operatively coupled to the spool. Other aspects include the movable barrier being a gate or door.

  • Patent number: 6076011
Abstract: A system to monitor surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of a user and provide appropriate feedback to the user includes an EMG feedback monitor sized and configured to be worn by the user. In the depicted embodiment, surface EMG activity is measured with electrodes integrally affixed to a housing of the system. Feedback is typically provided using vibrations of certain duration and repetition. The system operates under various user selectable operational modes. Each operational mode is associated with particular electromyographic feedback criteria used to determine appropriate feedback for the user. The electromyographic feedback criteria is related to signal levels and time measurements associated with surface EMG activity level measured of the user. The depicted embodiment includes a computer interface allowing EMG signal data recorded by the EMG feedback monitor to be sent to a computer system.
