  • Patent number: 7057812
Abstract: A projection screen includes a substrate having at least a first surface, a reflective layer having a first surface and an opposing second surface, and diffusion layer having a first surface defined by a matte finish and an opposing second surface. The second surface of the reflective layer is attached (e.g., via an adhesive) to the first surface of the substrate and the second surface of the diffusion layer is attached (e.g., via an optically transparent adhesive) to the first surface of the reflective layer. The projection screen is preferably flexible and wound around a conventional roller to form a projection screen system. Alternatively, the projection screen may be attached to a rigid substrate. The second surface of the diffusion layer has a preferably smooth finish, but may include desired irregularities to achieve a desired screen directivity performance.

  • Patent number: 7028738
Abstract: A shutter system for covering a wall opening includes a mounting assembly and a retractable/deployable barrier assembly. The mounting assembly includes at least one pair of guide tracks that are mountable on opposing sides of the opening. Each guide track includes inner surfaces that define a guide channel. Two of the inner surfaces oppose one another and at least one of such surfaces includes a protruding member that extends into the guide channel and angles away from an open end thereof. The barrier assembly includes a series of interlocking slats, some or all of which define angled recesses constructed to accommodate unobstructed passage of the slats in the guide channel during deployment and retraction. The recesses in the slats are further constructed to enable the slats to engage the protruding members of the guide tracks in the event that the slats are deflected due to exertion of a displacement force.

  • Patent number: 6892720
Abstract: A method for producing a diamond includes forming a table lying in a table plane; forming crown facets that are oriented at an angle of between 26° and 35° relative to the table plane; forming upper pavilion (UP) facets below the crown facets at an angle of between 45° and 80° relative to a girdle plane lying between bottoms of the crown facets and tops of the UP facets; and forming a set of lower pavilion (LP) facets between bottoms of the UP facets and the culet at an angle of between 38° and 44° relative to the girdle plane. The UP and LP facets form a rib line positioned between one-fifth and four-fifths the distance between the girdle plane and the culet, such that the UP facets extend between 20% and 80% of the distance between the girdle plane and the culet.

  • Patent number: 6886483
Abstract: A sailboat sail includes a sheet of material that contains stretchable webs that assume a planar orientation when placed against a planar surface, but which can stretch into a sail or airfoil orientation when mounted to a sailboat and exposed to wind loading. The sheet includes at least two webs of PVC vinyl laminated together between which is disposed a scrim of polyester yarn. The yarn is cross-hatched in a predetermined directional pattern. The sail has informational content, such as advertising, printed thereon or otherwise imparted thereto. A method for manufacturing such a sail includes providing a sheet of the aforementioned sail material, printing on one or both sides of the sheet information content to be displayed while the sail is mounted upon a sailboat, and cutting the sheet into the shape of a sail. The sheet may be cut before or after the information is imprinted thereon.

  • Patent number: 6879957
Abstract: A text-to-speech system utilizes a method for producing a speech rendition of text based on dividing some or all words of a sentence into component diphones. A phonetic dictionary is aligned so that each letter within each word has a single corresponding phoneme. The aligned dictionary is analyzed to determine the most common phoneme representation of the letter in the context of a string of letters before and after it. The results for each letter are stored in phoneme rule matrix. A diphone database is created using a way editor to cut 2,000 distinct diphones out of specially selected words. A computer algorithm selects a phoneme for each letter. Then, two phonemes are used to create a diphone. Words are then read aloud by concatenating sounds from the diphone database. In one embodiment, diphones are used only when a word is not one of a list of pre-recorded words.

  • Patent number: 6744150
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved electrical power strip which will automatically energize and de-energize one or more devices which are plugged into the strip, upon receiving an electrical signal from the primary device, without the need for manual actuation of a switch on the electrical strip or an under monitor system by the user. This system senses the primary status of the power supply through a low voltage power tap connector which is plugged in any appropriate socket of the primary device (which may be a personal computer). The output signal triggers a synchronous transfer switch or relay which enables power to secondary devices (which may be a monitor, printer, scanner, sub woofer, modem, etc.), permitting them to be synchronously turned on or off depending on the computer system status (ON or OFF).

  • Patent number: 6736531
Abstract: The invention is a small, portable illumination device which is used to illuminate reading material or other material. The device contains a clip which a user can employ to attach the device to a book or other reading material. The clip holds the illuminating device in place relative to the material. The device uses either battery or alternating current as power and can be switched from one to the other by insertion or removal of a male plug of a 120V AC/DC adapter into or from a jack in the device. The device can be turned on or shut off when a user switches the ON-OFF switch. In addition, there is a countdown timer which the user can set to a desired number of minutes. Once the countdown timer starts, the device will illuminate the material for the number of minutes to which the user set the countdown timer. When the countdown timer reaches zero, the device shuts off automatically. A buzzer sounds when the countdown timer reaches two minutes.
