    Abstract: An adaptor for a pool vacuum hose, which fits over a suction opening in the skimmer well of a swimming pool. The adaptor creates a watertight seal against walls of a skimmer well and has a port that extends upward from a base such that a typical pool vacuum can be connected to the adaptor. The adaptor thus allows for easy connection to a vacuum hose and prevents large particles and debris from reaching the filter. When use of the vacuum is complete, an outer housing is rotated, breaching the watertight seal, and allowing easy removal of the adaptor. The adaptor is readily usable with typical swimming pool skimmer wells.

    Abstract: A cannula has a shank and a tip which is elliptical in cross-section having radially extending crescent-shaped fins for engaging the tissue lining the tunnel of an incision. The cannula is thus retained in position and is not forced out with fluid pressure or by traction on attached tubing with eye movements or inadvertently hooking instruments. The cannula is rotated to disengage the fins from the incision by stretching the incision with the major axis of the elliptical tip. The cannula of the present invention is suitable for penetration of organs or vessels under fluid pressure for surgical procedures, in particular for ophthalmic surgical procedures.

    Abstract: A disposable ink refill system includes a recharge cartridge that attaches to a conventional desktop inkjet printer. A host cartridge unit, which includes a translating inkjet cartridge and an attached umbilical assembly, is fluidly connected to the recharge cartridge. The umbilical assembly easily attaches and detaches from the recharge cartridge to facilitate quick and easy exchange of the ink recharge cartridge, thereby providing a significantly less expensive alternative to ink cartridge replacement. The host ink cartridge unit, which has a useful life exceeding its ink capacity, is refilled instead of replaced, thus lowering a user's costs. The docking platform is integrated into the printer chassis, thus further facilitating quick and easy coupling of the umbilical assembly to the recharge cartridge. A docking platform, attached to the printer, provides the interconnection between the recharge cartridge and the host cartridge unit.

    Abstract: A new method and device to encapsulate integrated circuits such as flip chips and BGA packages. A special mold to surrounds the chip to be encapsulated in a cavity, and the encapsulant is injected into the cavity at an elevated pressure, and possibly at an elevated temperature. This shortens the cavity filling time by two or three orders of magnitude, compared to the conventional dispensing process. The reliability of the package is increased by increasing the adhesion of encapsulant to the package, by controlling fillet shape through in-mold curing, and by completely filling the cavity through proper mold design and, optionally, evacuation of the cavity prior to injection. The invention also allows the use of a wider range of encapsulants, including highly viscous material, fast curing materials and reworkable materials.

Each microcapsule contains a reversible thermochromic coloring material which exhibits a visible change in color between a first color state and a second color state in response to a change in temperature.     Abstract: A new duplicating carving machine that will allow individuals to easily and accurately carve wooden propellers, musical instruments, sculpture or other items. The invention has a unique and rigid carving mechanism, having a stylus and motorized cutter mounted upon a rigid "U"-shaped frame, combined with a simple and accurate alignment system, in which the U-frame pivots upon a transverse bar which is aligned upon side rails in the manner of a T-square, enabling the duplicator to easily and accurately carve a propeller or other item from a three-dimensional master. The duplicating carver of the invention is very simple to set up and operate, and includes a novel brake mechanism to stabilize the cutting motion. The average craftsman will be able to quickly and precisely shape a workpiece--any design from violin faces, electric guitar bodies or scroll work on cabinet doors, to airplane propellers, to name only a few. Only sanding is required to achieve the finished shape.

    Abstract: A bee dissemination device or dispenser that is non destructive to the hive, is easy to insert, refill, and remove includes a cartridge insertable in a housing. The device is designed to be used by a non professional bee keeper, such as a grower. It is inserted into the entrance of a standard bee hive with minimal disruption to the hive or colony. When the bees exit the hive, they walk up a ramp through a dry biological control suspension and leave the hive, carrying and depositing the biological control agent onto the flowers as they pollinate the crop. When the biological control agent runs low, additional material is added easily by lifting a hinged lid or replacing the old cartridge with a filled one. The lid also provides some moisture protection to keep the biological agent dry, thereby facilitating bee inoculation. The dispenser is removed by simply pulling it from the hive entrance when pollination activities are completed. The removal is non disruptive and does not destroy the integrity of the hive.

    Abstract: A gate assembly for a double disk gate valve having two closure disks with a resilient material between. The resilient material and closure disks are enveloped in an outer harder coating. Closing the gate valve brings the disks into initial sealing contact with the bottom of the valve seat. Applying pressure to the gate valve after contact is made between the gate assembly and the valve seat causes the resilient central member to exert pressure against the closure disks, thus pressing the outer coating of the gate assembly against the sidewalls of the valve seat. This action creates a better sealing engagement with the seat surface to exclude flow. Wear on the gate assembly is significantly reduced since the gate assembly does not make contact with the sidewalls of the seat while being moved between an open position and a closed position.

A disk or membrane type filter is placed in an autoclavable filter unit that attaches to the handle of an existing design dental instrument such that the form and function of the dental instrument are not adversely affected. The filter unit, which fits in-line between the dental instrument and the DUWL, includes two portions that are detachably connected by an annular sleeve. When connected, a recess between the portions forms a recess that holds a microfiltration disk filter for filtering water that flows through the dental instrument before it reaches a patient's mouth. The filter unit is easily sterilized after the disk filter is removed.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a box insert for protecting bottles. The box insert is formed from a piece of cardboard with fold lines. When the cardboard is folded along the lines and a bottle is placed within the cardboard, the bottle's sides are surrounded by cardboard. At least one bottom and top cut are provided through the cardboard across one of the fold lines. When the cardboard is pushed below the bottom cut and above the top cut, the cardboard folds inward to create a bottom and top indentation to hold the bottle away from the bottom and top of the box. If the bottle has a neck, the top indentation is positioned next to the bottle's neck above the body of the bottle. Usually the top indentation is formed from two top cuts. The inserts and bottles are then placed in a box for shipping. The cardboard inserts provide cardboard indentations that cushion and provide a small space between the bottom and top of the box.

    Abstract: We have studied the regulation of the extracellular chymoelastase protease (Pr1) of Metarhizium anisopliae, an enzyme involved in the penetration of insect cuticle by Metarhizium and other entomopathogenic fungi. We report here the isolation and characterization of a Pr1 cDNA clone with a full length insert. Pr1 is synthesized as a large precursor (40.3 kDa) containing a signal peptide and a propeptide and the mature protein is predicted to have a relative molecular mass of 28.6 kDa. The primary structure of Pr1 shares extensive homology (30-60%) with enzymes of the subtilisin subclass of the serine endopeptidases and the serine, histidine and aspartyl components of the active site in subtilisins are preserved. The genes coding for chymoelastase or slightly altered versions thereof, can be used to transform various organisms (i.e. fungi, viruses, plants, bacteria, etc.) such that the transformed organisms are capable of producing chymoelastase in recoverable quantities.

    Abstract: A riding lawn mower has wheels which are spring suspended from the chassis and a floating-type cutter deck hangs from the chassis. When a wheel moves upwardly relative to the chassis, as occurs when the wheel goes across a bump or when the chassis leans in a turn, a nearby portion of the cutter deck is lifted upwardly in response. In one embodiment, the drive wheels are independently spring suspended rear wheels and the cutter deck is mounted between the front and rear wheels. On each side of the machine a chain runs from a lifting bracket attached to each rear wheel motor mount and runs down to the rear end of the deck. So, when a wheel moves upwardly the deck is moved upwardly. In another embodiment, the front wheels are the spring suspended drive wheels and the cutter deck is cantilevered from the front end of the machine. The rear end of the cutter deck is lifted upwardly upon upward wheel motion.

When primary power is lost, a solenoid is de-energized, depressing a microswitch and completing the backup circuit to the alternate power source. The backup motor rotates into contact with the fan to ensure uninterrupted airflow. This backup system is especially suited for powering an air distribution fan that ensures sufficient oxygen reaches a coal fire burning within a coal stove, thus maintaining the coal fire until primary power is restored. This backup system is readily adapted to typical coal-burning stoves in addition to other devices.

    Abstract: An affordable means of protecting a barn against fly infestation by trapping in a novel trap design predatory arthropods such as Carcinops pumilio and Macrocheles muscaedomesticae from another barn having a mature predator population, and transferring the traps to accumulations of manure which are underpopulated with the predatory arthropods. The predators self-release onto the predator-free manure and establish themselves, preventing fly infestations which would normally occur. The trap of the invention is a box-like structure, having a filter surface on one side which has openings large enough to admit Hister beetles and Macrochelid mites, but small enough to prevent the entry of hide beetles and litter beetle pests. Inside the box is an appropriate bait material which will attract the desired predatory beetles or mites, such as a slurry of housefly eggs in water spread on absorbent material. The traps are spread across a mature manure pile.

Apart from differences in size, the same design principles are applicable from the chip level to the board level of a microelectronic system. The invention comprises a low cost pressure engaged electrical and thermal connection, based on insert/receptacle structures in which the contact force and insertion force are separated. Such a design allows tunable contact force while it minimizes the insertion force and allows also for self-assembly and reworkability.
