    Abstract: This is a method for limiting access to selected features of a freely distributed multimedia file, by disabling selected features of the file (using encryption, compression, or other access denial), distributing the file with some enabled features as an inducement to new users, and offering to enable more features when a new user attempts to use a disabled feature. A licensing system then receives a request from the user's system, identifying a specific operating context and one or more features desired by the corresponding user. Accounting is done and an authorization is sent to the user or the user's system to enable the features. However, the authorization is uniquely associated with the measured operating context of the user and the features remain enabled only for said operating context, thus limiting full operation to authorized users, while permitting new users access to limited operations.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus of encouraging distribution, registration, and purchase of free copyable software and other digital information which is accessed on a User's System via a Programmer's Program. Software tools which can be incorporated into a Programmer's Program allow the User to access Advanced Features of the Programmer's Program only in the presence of a valid Password which is unique to a particular Target ID generated on an ID-Target such as the User's System. Advanced features will thus relock if the Password is copied to another ID-target. If a valid Password is not present, the User is invited to obtain one, and provided with the means of doing so, and of installing that Password in a place accessible to the User's System on subsequent occasions. The present invention also provides Programmers with means to invoke business operations as well as computational operations with their programs, and thus to automatically obtain payment from Users who elect to obtain passwords.

    Abstract: Unpredictable response variations of the output value signals from radiometer or receiver channels due to noise are minimized when composing a millimeter wave image. The image is composed from composition signals which are each related to the corresponding output value signals from the channels. Some composition signals are weighted by a weighting factor which is different from a weighting factor used for weighting other composition signals. Preferably, the reciprocal of the standard deviation of variations of the output value signals from each channel is used as the weighting factor for deriving the composition signals from the output value signals from that channel. The intensity of each pixel of the image is composed by adding the weighted composition signals associated with that pixel.

    Abstract: Output value signals from radiometer or receiver channels are normalized to achieve a flat field response when creating a millimeter wave image. A normalizing factor is applied to the output value signals from each channel, and the normalizing factor accommodates drift in offset of the output value signals on a scan-by-scan basis. The normalizing factor is based on each channel observing a different mean scan brightness temperature from a portion of the scene than the mean brightness temperature of the entire scene. The normalizing factor is obtained by solving a system of simultaneous equations in which normalizing factors from all of the channels are related to one another, preferably by a consistency condition where the mean scan temperature of each channel is equal to an average of the intensities of those image pixels to which the output value signals from that channel contributes.

    Abstract: The system and software of the present invention presents a process for translating a source palette containing TV unsafe colors into a resultant modified palette containing only TV safe colors, while preserving the color trends in the source palette. The software will first analyze a source color palette to determine the TV unsafe colors contained therein. For each TV unsafe color in the source color palette, the software determines the closest TV safe color by selecting a TV safe color that is the shortest Euclidean distance from the TV unsafe color. The TV unsafe colors are substituted with the calculated TV safe colors and stored in the resultant palette. The software will divide the color space of the source palette into discrete regions, e.g., by Hue (H), by selecting reference colors as the boundaries of the regions. The initially TV safe color will then be modified in a manner similar to the modifications made on nearby reference colors that were required to make them TV safe.

A management component coordinates the archival functions between the various client components and the file processor, including setting scheduling policies, aging policies, index pruning policies, drive cleaning policies, configuration information, and keeping track of running and waiting jobs. The management component also keeps the scheduling information for a timetable of backups of the client devices and allocates storage space. The modular computer storage system may also work in conjunction with a Storage Area Network.

Respective markings (176, 177) on edge regions of rails (171, 174) of the frame (170) may indicate an angular setting of a guide bar (500), or, a protractor (810, 810a) may indicate the angular setting. The guide bar (500) may be relocated facing away from the filament (200) and used as an angle finding device.
