  • Patent number: 7575262
Abstract: A generally X-shaped lift coupling for use with a conventional dovetail socket. One leg of the X-shaped lift coupling slides axially in a keyway in the other leg between a position where the lower end of the sliding leg is engaged with an angularly extending wall of the dovetail socket, and a position where the sliding leg is fully disengaged from the dovetail socket. A retainer holds the slidable leg in assembled relationship with the fixed leg. At least the fixed leg includes a lifting eye for engagement by a lifting member. The application of a lifting force to the lifting eye causes the lower ends of the legs to wedgedly engage the dovetail socket to lock the lift coupling to the dovetail socket. When the slidable leg is also provided with a lifting eye, the two eyes are generally in registry when the slidable leg is fully engaged with the dovetail socket. Insertion of a lifting member through both eyes locks the two legs together in an assembled configuration.

  • Patent number: 7560067
Abstract: A method of forming dense articles from metal or metal alloy powders by friction forming. A self supporting shaped deposit of powder is formed on a substrate. Relative movement is established between the shaped deposit and a friction forming tool. The forming end of the friction tool is urged into compressive contact with the shaped deposit so as to generate an amount of heat sufficient to plasticize the deposit and thereby form a dense article. The steps may be repeated to built up the article to any pre-desired thickness. The substrate may be removed to establish a free standing coherent article, or the article may be left tightly bonded to the substrate. The article is very uniform in both thickness and composition, and enjoys substantially full density and a very fine microstructure.

  • Patent number: 7510047
Abstract: A complex speaker edge and asymmetric resonator panel in which the acoustic vibration damping capacity of the speaker edge varies longitudinally around the speaker edge. The resonator panel has an aspect ratio of approximately 1.3:1 or more, and is composed of top and bottom panels held in spaced apart relationship by a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs extending therebetween. The ribs extend at an angle of from approximately 5 to 35 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the panel. The angle is acoustically matched to the complex speaker edge to improve the accuracy with which said acoustic vibration is reproduced. The effectiveness of the differential damping capacity of the edge in improving the quality of sound output from a speaker assembly is determined by observing the average magnitude of the excursions of the sound level pressure versus frequency curves for comparable complex and single speaker edges, particularly in the 200 to 10,000 Hertz range.

  • Patent number: 7487849
Abstract: A cutting element and a method for forming a cutting element is described and shown. The cutting element includes a substrate, a TSP diamond layer, a metal interlayer between the substrate and the diamond layer, and a braze joint securing the diamond layer to the substrate. The thickness of the metal interlayer is determined according to a formula. The formula takes into account the thickness and modulus of elasticity of the metal interlayer and the thickness of the TSP diamond. This prevents the use of a too thin or too thick metal interlayer. A metal interlayer that is too thin is not capable of absorbing enough energy to prevent the TSP diamond from fracturing. A metal interlayer that is too thick may allow the TSP diamond to fracture by reason of bending stress. A coating may be provided between the TSP diamond layer and the metal interlayer. This coating serves as a thermal barrier and to control residual thermal stress.

  • Patent number: 7488537
Abstract: A superabrasive fracture resistant compact is formed by depositing successive layers of ceramic throughout the network of open pores in a thermally stable self-bonded polycrystalline diamond or cubic boron nitride preform. The void volume in the preform is from approximately 2 to 10 percent of the volume of the preform, and the average pore size is below approximately 3000 nanometers. The preform is evacuated and infiltrated under at least about 1500 pounds per square inch pressure with a liquid pre-ceramic polymerizable precursor. The precursor is infiltrated into the preform at or below the boiling point of the precursor. The precursor is polymerized into a solid phase material. The excess is removed from the outside of the preform, and the polymer is pyrolized to form a ceramic. The process is repeated at least once more so as to achieve upwards of 90 percent filling of the original void volume.

  • Patent number: 7041250
Abstract: A process for producing a binder phase free fine grained refractory metal compact at temperatures that are less than about 80 percent of the melting point of the refractory metal. A refractory metal is mixed with a metallic reagent to produce a mixture with a low melting point, and formed into a preform. The metallic reagent has limited solubility in the solid phase refractory metal. The refractory metal-metallic reagent mixture forms a liquid phase at the boundaries of the refractory metal grains. The metallic reagent diffuses into the boundaries of the refractory grains leaving a solid refractory-reagent phase at the boundaries between the grains. As heating continues at less than about 80 percent of the melting point of the refractory metal, consolidation takes place with minimum grain growth until the solid refractory-reagent phase substantially disappears and a refractory metal compact without a binder phase is recovered.
