Patent number: 6479989Abstract: In accordance with the present invention there is provided an eddy current probe for the detection of defects within a structure. The probe has a sensing end with a coil disposed therein. The coil is operative to generate an eddy current field within the structure when placed adjacent to the structure. Furthermore, the probe of the present invention includes a metallic shield disposed around the coil and operative to focus the eddy current field within the structure. In order to generate the eddy current field, the coil is in electrical communication with a frequency generator. The frequency generator is operative to generate a high and low frequency signal within the coil in order to enhance detection of defects within the structure.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1999Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Inventor: Albert Rudolph Taylor

Patent number: 6309498Abstract: A self-contained thermal transfer label is disclosed herein. The product is formed as paper stock having an area of release material applied to a surface portion thereof. A layer of adhesive material is applied upon the release material. A thermal transfer donor ribbon is mated to the label by the area of adhesive material. The donor ribbon is treated, prior to mating with the label, such that the surface tension at the donor ribbon is modified to a level substantially different from that of the release material. As a consequence, when the donor ribbon is removed from the label, after printing on the label, the adhesive remains secured to the donor ribbon, rather than the underlying label. A result is a label that may support a higher quality image, but without adhesive residue after the donor sheet is peeled away. Various applications of the product are disclosed herein.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2000Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Inventor: Alfred Doi

Patent number: 4347836Abstract: A solar heating system for preheating water which may be used in conjunction with an existing hot water heater. The use of potable water as the heating fluid renders the use of a heat exchanger unit unnecessary. A novel collector unit is disclosed which includes a molded plastic collector frame with integral fluid passageway and a thermally compatible absorber plate bonded to the frame. The use of thermally compatible collector components serves to minimize bondline strains due to uneven thermal expansion of the materials. Reliable and continuous operation of the system is, therefore, possible over a wide range of temperature conditions. Diagonally opposite standoff regions provide even liquid flow across the collector surface regardless of which way the collector is turned. The durable unitized collector design eliminates the need for frame members, additional fluid conduits, specially manufactured collector plates and multiple collector sealing layers.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1980Date of Patent: September 7, 1982Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventor: Arthur M. Patent number: 4265467Abstract: A frictional suspension damping system is provided whereby vehicular oscillations due to an uneven terrain may be controlled by electrically regulated frictional braking device adapted to restrain the rotational movement of a remote torsion bar. Each wheel having an associated torsional member may be so damped. A centralized processor may be used for simultaneous control of a plurality of friction brakes.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1979Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventor: Benjamin J. Patent number: 4256276Abstract: Movable appendages or stores containers that are positioned controlled in regard to an airplane so as to approximate the cross-sectional area distribution of a minimum drag body of revolution through varied flight regimes of the airplane from take-off to landing and thereby obtain favorable interaction of pressure fields throughout such flight regimes and adjust the store increment on the locus of least drag points in deference to the teaching of the prior art to design the location and shape of such appendages in a compromise position for but one portion of an airplane's flight regime; i.e., normal cruise altitude and speed.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1978Date of Patent: March 17, 1981Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventors: Victor R. Ciminera, Ronald H. Hendrickson

Patent number: 4252185Abstract: A heat transferring device for transferring heat from an upper to a lower location utilizing a mechanical pump and motor to provide fluid transport. The device is entirely encased within a single vertically disposed member requiring no external plumbing and a minimum of fabrication. The resulting device is both compact and cost effective.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1979Date of Patent: February 24, 1981Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventor: Robert Kosson

Patent number: 4249976Abstract: A method of continuously manufacturing honeycomb sandwiches is provided wherein skin panels of various materials may be more easily and effectively adhered to the honeycomb core. Thermoplastic adhesives which soften at temperatures above the laminate thermosetting temperature are used to provide firm bonding. Bondline voids, therefore, become less frequent and more easily repairable.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1979Date of Patent: February 10, 1981Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventor: Gordon F. Patent number: 4231423Abstract: A method for making a heat pipe panel comprising the steps of forming parallel furrows in a sheet metal plate, covering the sheet metal plate with another plate, bonding the plate together around the edges and between the furrows, to form parallel cavities between the plates, charging the cavities with working fluid and sealing the cavities to form individual heat pipes in the panel. The furrows may be filled with wicking material, and capillary grooves may be cut in the furrows before bonding the plates together. The cover plate also may have furrows formed therein. A header furrow may be provided for the fluid charging operations.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1977Date of Patent: November 4, 1980Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventor: Robert A. Haslett
