  • Patent number: 6289280
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in a hybrid position location system. The method and apparatus combines measurements from Global Positioning System (GPS) and terrestrial transceiver stations to compute the location of a device. An algebraic solution to hybrid position location system equations is output from the method and apparatus. The method and apparatus determines the position of a device using a non-iterative method, as against the use of a conventional iterative least mean square method. The method of the present invention can be used to solve the location system equations in scenarios where a non-iterative solution is desirable. In certain scenarios, the location system equations may have two possible solutions. An iterative method would converge on one of the solutions, without any indication of the existence of the other ambiguous solution. Moreover, the iterative method may converge on the incorrect of the two ambiguous solutions.

  • Patent number: 6229841
Abstract: In a remote unit receiver capable of demodulating a plurality of signal instances corresponding to a singe remote unit transmitted signal, a first instance of a signal is demodulated to produce a first set of energy values corresponding to a set of possible data values of the signal. A second instance of the signal is demodulated to produce a second set of energy values corresponding to the set of possible data values. The first and the second sets of energy values are then combined to determine a combined set of energy values. A first estimate of a most likely transmitted data value is determined based upon the combined set of energy values An energy level of the first instance is determined based upon the energy value within the first set of energy values corresponding to the first estimate of the most likely transmitted data value.

  • Patent number: 6211820
Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for performing position location in wireless communications system. In one embodiment the invention comprises a method for performing position location in a subscriber unit in a CDMA wireless communications system having a base station, including the step of receiving a position location request during a communication, entering a position location mode, transmitting frames to the base station while performing a position location procedure, and returning to communications mode when said position location procedure has been completed.

  • Patent number: 6208292
Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for performing position location in wireless communications system. One embodiment of the invention comprises a method of performing position location in a wireless subscriber unit having a local oscillator, including the steps of receiving a position location request, acquiring a timing signal when a sufficient period of time has elapsed since the local oscillator has been corrected and correcting said local oscillator using a correction signal based on said timing signal, substantially freezing the correction signal, performing a position location procedure using the local oscillator with the correction signal applied, and ending said position location procedure.

  • Patent number: 6184812
Abstract: An inventive high-resolution Delta-Sigma analog-to-digital converter using a Continuous-Time implementation having suppressed sensitivity to clock jitter. The inventive method and apparatus suppresses the sensitivity to jitter by the square of the oversampling ratio when compared to current Continuous-Time implementations of Delta-Sigma modulators. The present invention eliminates the clock jitter disadvantage between sampled-data and Continuous-Time implementations of Delta-Sigma modulators. The present invention preferably includes a digital-to-analog converter that ensures that the integral of an output voltage is constant over a clock duty cycle regardless of clock jitter. The digital-to-analog converter preferably includes at least two switches and a capacitor. A first switch is used to charge the capacitor and a second switch is used to discharge the capacitor. Each switch is controlled by a clock phase wherein the sum of the two phases equals the clock duty cycle.

  • Patent number: 6178337
Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a wireless telecommunication system utilizing code division multiple access (CDMA) over-the-air with a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) A-interface based network is described. A CDMA radio frequency (RF) signal interface provides a bi-directional interface to a subscriber unit, and a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications A-interface SS7 transport provides a bi-directional interface with GSM mobile services switching center (MSC). Additionally, a transparent message transport is provided over which signaling messages defined in the GSM A-interface protocol are exchanged between the GSM MSC and a subscriber unit. Other signaling message generating by the GSM MSC and subscriber unit are processed and various actions are taken in response, including the configuration and control of signal processing resources.

  • Patent number: 6166685
Abstract: A method and apparatus for tracking the position of a mobile unit in a mobile radio communication system using information from earth-orbiting satellites and information received from the infrastructure of the system, wherein the infrastructure consists of equipment associated with transmitting and receiving voice or data traffic to and from the mobile phone. An initial position of the mobile unit is calculated using measurements from earth-orbiting satellites. Next, one or more range measurements are made using signals transmitted between the mobile unit and the infrastructure. A positional difference between the initial position and a current position of the mobile station is estimated using the one or more range measurements, wherein only range measurements made from signals transmitted between the mobile unit and the infrastructure are used to perform the estimating.
