  • Patent number: 5729085
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp has a protective assembly that includes a protective tube preformed from a semi-rigid non-frangible polymeric transparent or translucent material that is stabilized against ultraviolet radiation. The protective tube has a body portion received over the glass tube with a clearance sufficient to enable the glass tube to be slid into the protective tube and a closure portion at each end that is mechanically and thermally deformed permanently to engage an adhesive layer on the terminal cap of the lamp and form a bond therewith such as to provide a mechanical connection that resists separation of the terminal cap from the protective tube and a moisture barrier and hermetic seal between the lamp and the protective tube.

  • Patent number: 5727506
Abstract: To avoid stalling of a two-stroke internal combustion engine as its orientation is changed upon a change of direction in which a working machine such as a chain saw is held, non-atomized fuel is prevented from flowing precipitously into the combustion chamber of the engine. The engine comprises a crank case forming a crank chamber which has an intake port opening into the crank chamber, and a flow control feature at the circumferential inner surface of the crank chamber in the vicinity of the intake port for retarding flow of non-atomized fuel.

  • Patent number: 5727270
Abstract: The invention is an inflatable self sealing valveless fluid or gas container useable for a wide variety of applications including cushioning, package filler, mattresses, rafts and the like. The container is formed from one or more inflatable self sealing elements, each inflatable element being formed from a pair of inflatable cells. Each cell is formed from an inner and outer sheet of thermoplastic or other impermeable material, the sheets being sealed together at boundaries which define the inflatable cell. The inner sheets of each cell in the pair are sealed together such that the boundaries of the seal define a fill channel through which fluid or gas may pass between the cells. Apertures in the inner sheets of both cells within the fill channel allow fluid or gas to pass from the fill channel into both cells to cause inflation.

  • Patent number: 5724924
Abstract: A method for controlling a cooling circuit of an internal combustion engine which includes a coolant pump for adjusting a coolant flow rate, a radiator in which heat is exchanged between the coolant and an air flow which can be controlled by a fan, and a control unit which controls at least the speed of the coolant pump and of the fan as a function of a required temperature value of the coolant. In order to shorten the warm-up phase of the engine and to minimize the power consumption of the pump and of the fan when the coolant temperature is below a selected low level, the speed of the coolant pump and the speed of the fan are controlled based on maintaining a required temperature difference of the coolant between the inlet and the outlet of the engine and, after the selected low level has been reached, the speed of the coolant pump and of the fan are controlled both as a function of the required temperature difference and of a required coolant temperature level at the engine outlet.

  • Patent number: 5725814
Abstract: A coextrusion system employs two or more extruders, each with a gear pump at its output connected to a coextrusion die. Different materials are extruded by each extruder. Varying the speed of one or both gear pumps varies the content of the extrudate. The gear pumps permit precise variation of the relative content of the materials extruded by the several extruders lengthwise along the extrudate. A display of a cross sectional dimension of the extrudate along a length of the extrudate permits observation of the lag that occurs between alteration of gear pump speed (or air pressure in the case of tubular or blown sheet extrudates) and the resultant change in dimension, so that a speed correction can be made at the appropriate time to compensate for differing shrinkage and stretching characteristics between the several extruded materials.

  • Patent number: 5722429
Abstract: In one embodiment described in the specification, a surgically implantable reciprocating pump employs a check valve as the piston, which is driven by a permanent magnet linear electric motor to assist either side of the natural heart. The pump is implanted in the aorta or pulmonary artery using vascular attachment cuffs such as flexible cuffs for suturing at each end with the pump output directly in line with the artery. The pump is powered by surgically implanted rechargeable batteries. In another embodiment, pairs of pumps are provided to replace or assist the natural heart or to provide temporary blood flow throughout the body, for example, during operations to correct problems with the natural heart.

  • Patent number: 5724082
Abstract: In the embodiments described in the specification, an ink jet head has an orifice filter disposed between a pressure chamber and an orifice to trap contaminant particles having a size likely to block the orifice, while permitting smaller particles to pass through the filter, thereby preventing blocking of the orifice while avoiding substantial pressure drop in the pulses producing ejection of drops from the orifice. In addition, a separate filter having a substantially smaller pore size is incorporated in a reservoir from which ink is supplied to the pressure chamber, thereby filtering out small particles which might accumulate to produce orifice-blocking particles.

  • Patent number: 5724014
Abstract: A latching electromagnetic RF switch is provided with an armature having a permanent magnet mounted thereon. An electromagnetic coil surrounding the armature has a ferromagnetic member mounted opposite the armature. A spring holds the permanent magnet away from the ferromagnetic member, latching the switch in a first position. In a second position, the permanent magnet attracts the ferromagnetic member and holds the armature against the force of the spring latching the switch.

  • Patent number: 5720841
Abstract: A new type of positive working thermal imaging medium, and a process of forming an image with it is disclosed. This thermal imaging medium comprises a transparent support and (1) a layer comprising a homopolymer or copolymer comprising at least 60 mole % of monomer units containing covalently bound chlorine, (2) a layer containing a homopolymer or copolymer comprising at least 50 mole % of a vinyl acetal monomer unit, (3) an image forming layer, (4) a release layer, and (5) a thermoadhesive layer. After or before exposure to a heat pattern generated directly by a thermal head or indirectly by information-wise exposure to laser radiation a cover sheet is laminated to layer (5). After delamination a positive image is obtained on the original support.
