  • Patent number: 5666946
Abstract: Apparatus for delivering drugs to the lungs from an ultrasonic nebulizer by inspiration using a ventilator includes a flow system in which the nebulizer is connected in parallel with the series conduit between the ventilator delivery outlet and the ventilator discharge valve and exhaust outlet. One-way valves in parallel flow conduits to the nebulizer provide for bypassing the nebulizer except when the ventilator is in the inspiration phase of its operation, thereby eliminating an important cause of loss of drugs to the ventilator outlet during the expiration phase. The nebulizer, which can also be used for administration of drugs by inhalation (without a ventilator) has a flow regulator which provides for delivery of the drug from the nebulizer only during part of inspiration (or inhalation in a mouth breathing use) and for delivery of gas (air or oxygen) during the remaining part of inspiration (inhalation).

  • Patent number: 5667970
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of ordering DNA fragments in which binary overlap information, obtained by determining whether pairs of fragments hybridize to each other, is used to build a "spanning path" across a parent DNA molecule by successively attaching cloned fragments which overlap. The relative position of the many other, non-path fragments is not essential information, but can be determined. Means for eliminating false positives and false negatives is provided. The overlap relationships between fragments may be depicted as an interval graph.

  • Patent number: 5666525
Abstract: A technique for efficiently joining multiple large tables in a database system with a processor using a small main memory. The technique utilizes a join index and minimizes the number of Input/Output operations while maximizing the use of the small main memory through a buffer allocation process. The technique partitions available main memory into buffers and assigns conditions to the buffers to ensure that each buffer will receive a substantially equal amount of data in the join result. The technique then processes each input table separately based on the assigned conditions and sequentially reads and processes each input table. The output is vertically fragmented with one fragment for each input table which further allows the individual processing of each input table. Also described is a method for creating a join index if one is not present.

  • Patent number: 5662876
Abstract: A low-cost and facile method of purifying fullerenes to obtain a preparation enriched in a fullerene of selected molecular weight using activated carbon involves adding a fullarena mixture to the top end of a column comprising activated carbon, passing a solvent in which the selected molecular weight fullerene is soluble through the column, and recovering a fraction enriched in the selected molecular weight fullerene from the bottom end of the column. In addition to activated carbon, the column may further comprise silica gel, diatomaceous earth, or other materials which aid in column packing and eluent flow. The invention also provides for preparation of gram quantities of pure C.sub.60 and C.sub.70 fullerenes after a single column pass.

  • Patent number: 5661971
Abstract: In the embodiments described in the specification pollutants in the exhaust gas of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle having an exhaust-gas purification device containing a catalyst in the exhaust line are reduced by controlling The air/fuel ratio supplied to the cylinders of the internal combustion engine in such a way that at least one of the engine cylinders is operated with a lean air/fuel ratio and the remaining cylinders are operated with a rich air/fuel ratio while a lambda value of approximately one is maintained in the overall exhaust flow from all the cylinders. In addition to rapid heating of the catalyst in the exhaust-gas purification device and compensation for a relatively low storage capacity of the catalyst, this arrangement also reduces the quantity of untreated exhaust upstream of the catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5663104
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a semiconductor device for power supply use. A void is formed on a mating face of a pair of metallic molds. Moreover, an island of a lead frame is arranged in the void under the condition that the island is spaced from a surface of the void. A thermosetting resin is injected into the void so that the island and a semiconductor element assembled onto one face of the island are sealed by resin. At this time, a clearance between the other face of the island and one face of the metallic mold opposed to the other face of the island is set to be 2.0 to 0.3 mm and is smaller than a clearance between one face of the island and the other face of the metallic mold opposed to one face of the island. One face of the metallic mold is subjected to satin finish on which the maximum surface roughness H.sub.max is in a range from 3 to 10 .mu.m.
