  • Patent number: 5625839
Abstract: In an electronic postage meter and external servicing system, a method and apparatus are disclosed for loading data in a universal format from the external servicing device to the postage meter. Data packets sent from the external servicing device to the postage meter contain an address in the memory address space of the processor as well as data to be loaded to that address. Optionally the data packet may include a data length value and a repetition value, the repetition value indicating how many times the data are to be copied into the memory of the processor. The system overcomes limitations of the prior art in which data packets may only be sent to the meter for loading to a limited set of selectable destinations.

  • Patent number: 5624039
Abstract: A separator for sorting of particulate material suspended in a conveying gas into a fine fraction and a coarse fraction, which separator comprises a rotor with a shaft, a housing, which encases the rotor and has an inlet for the material/gas suspension and outlets for fine and coarse fractions, respectively. Regulating means are associated with the shaft for adjusting the axial position of the shaft, and hence of the rotor, relative to the housing, thereby adjusting the amount of unseparated material that bypasses the rotor and passes directly to the fine fraction outlet.

  • Patent number: 5623270
Abstract: A phased array antenna system compensates for the effects of antenna flexure, vibration and movement, and thereby negates these effects by introducing an appropriate phase or time delay into the signals being radiated from and received by the discrete antenna elements comprising the phased array antenna. This compensation eliminates the need for massive rigid back structures to maintain antenna rigidity, which thereby simplifies antenna design.

  • Patent number: 5623190
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for quickly measuring a primary resistance value of an AC motor without using high precision detectors and detecting malfunctions such as breaking of wire in the AC motor or in a power converting mechanism, open phase, and three-phase unbalance. A voltage drop attributable to the primary resistance of the AC motor can be estimated by using an estimated resistance value R.sub.1.sup.#, which is estimated in turn by an integral or proportional-plus-integral operation on the deviation between a detected magnetizing current value I.sub.M and a reference magnetizing current value I.sub.M *, in place of an actual primary resistance value R.sub.1. The time for the estimated resistance value R.sub.1.sup.# to reach the true primary resistance value is reduced with a varying reference magnetizing current value I.sub.M **. Variations of the estimated primary resistance values R.sub.1.sup.# s between the phases are corrected with a mean estimated primary resistance value R.sub.1M.sup.

  • Patent number: 5623719
Abstract: Electrostatographic image reproduction apparatus forms images of toner particles on a receptor material moving along a transport path. A rotatable contact roller contacts the receptor material while it has an electrostatically charged toner particle image on at least the adjacent surface thereof. The contact roller is selected from a receptor material transport roller, a guiding roller, and a reversing roller. Electrostatic charging device provide an electrostatic charge, having the same polarity as the charge polarity of the toner particles, on the surface of the contact roller before contact of the receptor material with the surface of the contact roller. Cleaning means remove any toner particles from the surface of the roller after release of the receptor material from the surface of the contact roller. Smudging of the toner image on the receptor material is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5622087
Abstract: A dual-mass flywheel comprises a primary mass (7) which is adapted to be fastened to a crankshaft (3) of an internal-combustion engine concentric to an axis of rotation (1) and a secondary mass (9) which is mounted for rotation relative to the primary mass (7) around the axis of rotation (1). The secondary mass (9) is coupled in a rotationally elastic manner to the primary mass (7) by a torsion-damping arrangement (19). The primary mass has two formed sheet-metal parts (35, 37) which define a cavity (47) to accommodate springs (17) of the torsion-damping arrangement (19) and is provided with supplementary masses in order to increase the moment of inertia. The supplementary masses may be made up of extensions (45, 63) of the formed sheet-metal parts (35, 37) or of additionally welded-on mass-rings (67). In particular, the supplementary masses are located in a region which is generally radially outwardly of the secondary mass (9).

  • Patent number: 5620258
Abstract: The bottoms 225 of circumferential groove 22 are equidistant from the axis of rotation 215 and constitute the sides of the column, the axes of rotation of which are common. The sides 226 and 227 of the circumferential groove 22 are not normal to the axis of rotation 215, and are beveled to form an acute angle to the bottom 225. That is, the sides 226 and 227 of the circumferential groove 22 form sides of cones the axes of rotation of which are common. The width of the circumferential groove 22 becomes widened from the surface to the inside. Resin 26 is coated on the surface of the circumferential groove 22 in such a manner that the coated surface has a substantially constant width. In this embodiment, a nylon type resin is coated with little peeling-off during use of the roller.

  • Patent number: 5619957
Abstract: A method for controlling a cooling circuit of an internal combustion engine which includes a coolant pump for adjusting a coolant flow rate, a radiator in which heat is exchanged between the coolant and an air flow which can be controlled by a fan, and a control unit which controls at least the speed of the coolant pump and of the fan as a function of a required temperature value of the coolant. In order to minimize the power consumption of the pump and of the fan while maintaining an optimum coolant temperature, the speed of the coolant pump and the speed of the fan are controlled based on a comparison of the time efficiencies of the coolant pump and of the fan for the heat flow transmitted to the radiator.

  • Patent number: 5620066
Abstract: A locking device for selectively securing two movable objects in desired positions relative to each other includes a cylinder and a piston movable within the cylinder and defining first and second working chambers of variable volumes. A fluid exchange connection provided on the piston includes a flow chamber having openings that communicate with the working chambers. A valve body slidably received on the piston in sealed relation is biased by a spring into a position closing the opening from the flow chamber to first working chamber. When the fluid pressure in the second working chamber exceeds a predetermined amount and acts on the valve body, the valve body is moved against the spring bias and opens to allow fluid to flow through the fluid exchange connection. In the open position, a larger area of the valve body is exposed to the pressure in the second chamber.
