Abstract: An erosion resistant labyrinth seal for use in a rotating machine, such as a turbine or a compressor, that has bleed holes formed in the labyrinth cavities for carrying away erosion producing contaminants entrained in a controlled flow of fluid passing through the seal. Material removed from the flow is vented away from the seal.

Abstract: A support bracket and guide assembly is employed with a multiple spindle head or other milling device to be mounted on a milling machine. A support bracket mounted on the horizontal dovetail ways of the machine holds a guide plate in which a vertical guide bar is slidably disposed. A slider mounted at the foot of the guide bar rides on an arcuate horseshoe member whose center is positioned at the axis of the device input shaft. The slider is tightened on the horseshoe member at a desired angle.

Abstract: Hydrogen is stored at cold temperatures (room temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature) by sorption in a high unit surface area activated carbon storage medium. A minor amount of a transition metal is dispersed in the carbon, and this significantly increases the hydrogen occupancy of the available storage sites on the carbon. In a favorable embodiment, the storage medium is activated so as to maintain a quantity of water, which acts as a co-catalyst to further enhance the quantity of hydrogen that can be stored.

Abstract: A convention box is folded from a single flat sheet of cardboard, corrugated board or other similar rigid material, to form a disposable yet durable attache case that can be handed out to attendees at a convention or meeting. Side panel members attached to a back panel fold over tabs that are associated with top and bottom panels to lock the box into a rigid, rectangular shape, and also provide rigidity to the side panels. The handles for the convention box are formed as handle halves each formed in a respective front and rear top panel. A slot can be provided in the rear panel for insertion of literature without having to open the box.

Abstract: A biopsy channel for use in the insertion tube of an endoscope or borescope having a reinforced length that passes through the steering section of the tube which can be bent to a small radius without collapsing or losing its circularity. The tubing is preferably a heat softenable thermoplastic and the reinforcement is a metal knitted fabric that is heat bonded into the outer surface of the tubing.

Abstract: Protecting garment usable in particular in hairdressing salons, of the type composed of an overall or cape, designed to be wrapped around the user's body, and of a towel adaptable on said overall.According to the invention:the overall or cape is a one-piece garment, the geometrical shape of which is such as to allow a sufficient development to protect efficiently the user, said garment having a neck opening to allow the user's head through,the towel at least is made from a complex material containing an absorbing non-woven material, and is triangular-shaped, said towel being provided along one of the sides of the triangle with means for securing it on the overall, at the level of the shoulders, at the back of the neck opening.

Abstract: A process for burning a carbonaceous fuel is disclosed. This process involves the steps of providing a combustion chamber equipped with a spark gap, introducing the fuel into the chamber, providing a high-energy a.c. wave, and connecting the wave to one of the electrodes of the spark gap.The alternating current wave used in the combustion process of this invention has a peak voltage of from 25,000 to 200,000 volts, a frequency of from 8,000 to 80,000 herz, and an energy of at least 600,000,000 volt-herz. The use of this wave creates an arc across the electrodes of the spark gap, thereby facilitating the combustion of the fuel.

Abstract: A top loading carton made from a unitary sheet of inexpensive disposable material in which returnable beverage containers, such as bottles or cans, are collected and returned to a redemption center. The sheet is folded to form two adjacent bins each of which has a vertically disposed window in the front panel that permits the collected beverage containers to be readily counted and tabulated.

Abstract: The control cable for a rockable forceps elevator of a side-looking endoscope has an elastomeric sleeve covering the exterior part of the cable from the endoscope head to the connection of the cable with the elevator. Seals are effected between the sleeve and the wall and between the sleeve and the distal end of the cable. An elongated shield is spaced from the control cable and extends proximally and parallel to the cable, to deflect the forceps or other flexible instrument emerging from the endoscope, and to protect the sleeve and cable from contact with the forceps.

Abstract: A writing shield having apparatus for preventing a document being written upon from being soiled by the hand of a writer who might work in a dirty environment. The shield includes a J-shaped body that conforms to the back or heel of the hand and the outside of the little finger when the hand is in a writing position. A ring like member is secured to the body that can be slipped over the little finger to removably attach the shield to the hand. The body is contoured so that it will glide over the document in one point contact thereagainst during the writing process.

Abstract: A stranding machine for the production of rope from a plurality of strands comprises a rotary tube formed of two or more tube sections coupled end to end to rotate about a common axis. A flexible connector joins adjacent ends of successive ones of the tube sections. In this flexible connector, a pair of spiders have a central mounting hub and spokes whose ends are affixed to the cylindrical wall of the associated tube section. A rigid metal barrel connector has a cylindrical body and radial end flanges. A pair of resilient flexible coupling rings connect respective end flanges of the barrel connector to the spider mounting hubs. This arrangement employing two flexible elements accommodates both angular and parallel misalignment of successive tube sections.

Abstract: A vehicular lamp having a one piece open topped resilient housing containing an outer peripheral groove that permits the housing to be snapped into a receiving opening formed in a body panel of a vehicle. The housing further includes an inner peripheral groove located above the outer groove into which a lens is snap fitted to close the housing. The inner groove is offset from the outer groove a sufficient distance so that the lens can be removed and replaced without having to remove the housing from the body panel. An outwardly disposed lip protrudes from the top of the outer groove that is inclined downwardly over the groove opening so that it will form a biased seal against the rim of the panel opening when the lamp is snap-locked in place.

Abstract: A gun case for a target rifle also serves as a collapsible portable shooter's bench. The bench has three detachable legs and three sockets or mounts on each side, permitting the shooter's bench to be set up for the right handed or left handed shooters. A gun rest for supporting the rifle fits into a socket or sleeve in the case. The case is equipped with locks to secure it when being stored or transported.

Abstract: A steering section for an endoscope or borescope employs a plurality of steering cables passing through peripheral bores in axially aligned flat washers. Spacer beads are strung on the cables between the washers to define hinges for the bending of the steering section. Pairs of hemispherical beads are employed for this purpose, and are disposed nose-to-nose, that is, with their spherical surfaces rocking on one another. Tuning spacer beads are provided in selected inter-washer spaces to limit the bending of the tuning section in one direction. To achieve the smallest possible dimension, the washers can be formed with an oval or elongated passageway.

Abstract: A trap filter assembly, of the type which can be employed with a video cable system to block a particular channel or band of channels and pass the remaining video signal, is formed of a circuit board, a centrally-disposed cylindrical ground block, and a housing formed of male and female housing halves which are press-fit over the circuit board onto the ground block. The housing halves form a solderless connection with the ground block, and the latter forms a solderless connection with ground pads on the printed circuit board. A slot cut in the cylindrical ground block receives the printed circuit board, and a zig-zag channel structure formed in one wall of the slot permits a zig-zag signal lead to extend from one end of the printed circuit board through a ground area of the board, to the other end thereof.

Abstract: An articulated arm-type excavator machine has a boom which has a trolley track affixed onto its underside. A trolley member from which a pulley block can be suspended travels along this track, and is urged into an operator-selected position by a double-acting hydraulic cylinder. A power winch is mounted on the overcarriage of the machine and a lifting cable runs from the winch, over the pulley block, to a lifting hook or other device.

Abstract: An optical partial pressure gas analyzer employs an electron beam to excite the outer electrons of gas atoms or molecules, and one or more photomultiplier tubes or other similar detectors to detect wavelengths of photons characteristic of the decay of the outer electrons of one or more species of gas molecules. The photomultiplier tubes have a viewing direction substantially at right angles to the electron beam. A Faraday trap or similar device is employed to avoid secondary electron generation. Thin-film interference filters are favorably employed to pass a specific characteristic wavelength of the desired species, and to reject other wavelengths. An electromechanical filter changer permits each photomultiplier tube to analyze two or more gasses alternately.

Abstract: In the treatment of high strength wastewater containing anaerobically digestible nutrients and organic substrates, the water is passed through a sealed reactor housing and the pressure in the headspace over the water is reduced under controlled conditions to provide for optimum operating conditions.
