    Abstract: A systolic array system of inner product step processors is provided in the form of a mesh connected network which rhythmically compute and pass data through the system. Each processor in the system regularly feeds data in and out, each time performing some computation, so that a regular flow of data is kept up in the network. Many basic matrix computations can be readily and efficiently pipelined on systolic array network systems according to these inventions. Such arrays enjoy simple and regular communication paths and the individual processors in the networks are substantially all identical. Similar hexagonally connected processors can, for example, optionally perform matrix multiplication and LU-decomposition of a matrix. Linearly connected systolic arrays are useful for performing a variety of other computations.

The retro-reflected light (42) is detected and the time of retro-reflection by reference to the phase of rotation of the mirror (18) is measured to provide a signal related to the angular position of the landmark (8) in the field (4). More than one landmark (8) can be observed simultaneously by using landmark (8) with edge filtering characteristics and appropriate arrangements for discriminating retro-reflected light (42) according to spectral characteristics.

    Abstract: The interface circuit is intended to be connected between a module terminal and a module itself and provides means for stimulating and sensing signals between the module and its terminal. The interface circuit comprises a decoupling section which connects or disconnects the interface circuit from the module, a test data section for receiving test data from outside sources, an inside section which connects the test data section with the interior of the module and an outside section which connects it with the terminal. A monitor section is also included to allow a terminal to be monitored while it is connected to from its module. The control section requires only four connections and generates the various control signals necessary to control the operation of the interface circuit.

    Abstract: In a modified "Conform" machine for continuous friction-actuated extrusion of metals, especially particulate copper, the abutment at the outlet end of the working passageway does not fully block the end of the wheel groove. Instead a substantial clearance is left, and metal extruding through it adheres to the wheel to re-enter the working passageway at the entry end. Preferably the abutment is of semicircular cross-section. For a given output rate, a significant reduction in torque, and working stresses, is obtained.

    Abstract: The control mechanism is for pneumatic apparatus of the kind comprising a piston-and-cylinder motor coupled between two relatively-movable parts (such as door-leaves) for driving them, when energized, to a predetermined relative position. A pilot valve is actuated when required to switch the apparatus to an emergency mode by isolating the motor from its power source and discharging it into an emergency reservoir having a volume large compared with the maximum volume of gas in the motor. While the pilot valve is actuated, the relatively-movable parts are urged towards their predetermined relative positions by a force small compared with the normal operating force. The pilot valve may be arranged to operate operation of an emergency release bolt, on obstruction detected by a detector valve (in which case a timing reservoir provides time delay before full power is restored), on power failure, or as required.
