Abstract: A tilt switch includes a casing in which a shorting element, such as a ball, is freely movable. An inside surface of the casing forms one fixed electrode surface, and an element projecting into the casing forms a second fixed electrode surface. The shorting element rolls along the first fixed electrode surface toward and away from the second fixed electrode surface. The chamber contains a dielectric liquid which is wettable to the first and second fixed electrode surfaces, and to the surface of the shorting element. The liquid is either a non-polar liquid or a weakly charged polar liquid. Surface tension acting on the liquid causes the surface of the shorting element to be pulled into close intimate relationship with the fixed electrode surfaces, sufficiently for an electric current to be enhanced by a quantum tunneling effect.

Abstract: The present invention is intended to provide an apparatus capable of detecting an air tube-detached state when said air tube has been detached from an air-actuated valve in order that the same air-actuated valve is caused to assume a closed state. The present invention relates to an air tube connection state detecting apparatus 10 for detecting whether the fore end of an air tube 56 for supplying compressed air to an air-actuated valve 16 for a gas container 12 is connected to said air-actuated valve 16 or not. The air tube connection state detecting apparatus comprises a to-be-contacted member 82, provided at a predetermined position separate from said air-actuated valve 16, to which the fore end of said air tube 56 is to be connected; and a detection means 86 for detecting that the fore end of said air tube 56 is connected to said to-be-connected member 82.
Abstract: In a binding (19) for winding overhangs (20) of rotors (1) of electric machines, essentially comprising a plastic matrix with fibrous material embedded therein, the binding (19) is formed by winding a fiber tape (15) onto the winding overhang (20). The plastic matrix is composed of a thermoplastic. Furthermore, a method is described for applying the fiber tape to the winding overhang of an electric machine.

Abstract: The electronic instrument has a two-part housing (26, 27) which surrounds in a dusttight manner a printed board fitted with at least one electronic component. The housing (26, 27) contains a ventilating orifice (50) led through one of its two parts. A ventilating device (51) is arranged in this ventilating orifice (50), with an air-permeable diaphragm permeable to water vapor in a directionally dependent manner and with a splashwater guard preceding the diaphragm.Undesirable condensation water in the housing interior is avoided, since excess water vapor present in the housing interior is led outward through the diaphragm while the electronics are operating. At the same time, the splashwater guard prevents the diaphragm from coming into contact with splashwater and its operating capacity from being impaired.
Abstract: Fluorenes and polyfluorenes having one or two polar-group-containing alkyl substituents on their "9" carbon methylenes are disclosed together with the polymers' use as luminescent materials in organic light-emitting diodes and light-emitting electrochemical cells.
Abstract: In a graphical user interface for computers, a scroll bar tracking and drawing procedure associates elements of the scroll bar with regions on the display. The region for the thumb can move relative to the other regions, and thereby track the movement of the cursor. Within each element's associated region, any desired pattern can be drawn. As a result, the thumb can be non-rectangular in shape. Furthermore, since the image within a region can be any arbitrary pattern, the image for the thumb can be either a complete image, to accommodate live scrolling, or a ghost image to accommodate ghost scrolling. As such, a single procedure can support both modes of operation, and permit the interface to be easily switched between the two.
Abstract: When the vehicle is running in a low speed condition, a vehicle-mounted running control device performs vehicle control of a normal mode without performing of traffic jam control of the vehicle, if it is discriminated that the vehicle will change a running course thereof on the basis of road information of a scheduled vehicle running course obtained from a navigation system, and performs the traffic jam control with the vehicle being discriminated as in the traffic jam condition, if it is discriminated that the vehicle will not change the running course thereof.

Abstract: Enveloping apparatus with an envelope filling position (4) and, extending therefrom, an envelope transfer track (46) extending along a closing nip (49) beside the envelope transfer track (46). Beyond the closing nip (49) the envelope transfer track (46) comprises opposite surfaces and a brake, blocking or drive mechanism (60) for at least delaying movement in direction of transport of those surfaces. The control structure (43, 61, 72) is adapted to activate an upsetting feature (55, 56, 71) in response to a displacement of that envelope (5) from the envelope filling position (4) through a fixed, specific distance. With the opposite surfaces with a nip thereinbetween, movement in direction of transport of envelopes with the leading edge in different positions can be delayed, stopped or reversed, without requiring adjusting a stop or the like. There is also described a method for filling and closing envelopes.
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for depositing a dielectric film on a substrate in a plasma process chamber wherein the uniformity of the refractive index of the film is improved. The method involves introducing an oxygen reactant and a silicon reactant into the process chamber and generating a plasma, contacting the substrate with the plasma and depositing a SiO.sub.x film thereon. To control uniformity of the refractive index of the film, a second oxygen reactant is injected locally at a position at which it is desired to lower the refractive index. The second oxygen reactant can be O.sub.2 which is injected at the periphery of the substrate. The gas injection apparatus includes a substrate support below the substrate and a deposition shield surrounding the substrate. The shield contains gas injection outlets directed toward the periphery of the substrate for supplying the O.sub.2 to a region above the outer periphery of the substrate.
