Patent number: 4029887Abstract: An apparatus for heating glass-forming materials within a delivery conduit extending from an electric glass melting furnace to a connector channel is disclosed. The conduit is made from an electrically conductive refractory metal such as molybdenum and is used to conduct current from inside the furnace to its exit end in the channel. Joule effect heating between the exit end of the conduit and an electrode in the connector channel indirectly causes the glass materials within the conduit to partially melt, to the extent that the materials within the conduit may be exhausted from the conduit. A flange assembly for use with a molybdenum conduit is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1976Date of Patent: June 14, 1977Assignee: Corning Glass WorksInventor: Paul F. Spremulli

Patent number: 4017293Abstract: A method of heat treating a plurality of geometrically congruent and flat lens blanks made from a phototropic glass, such heat treating being performed for development of the phototropic properties thereof. A plurality of lens blanks are formed into a stack by alternately positioning and clamping similar areas between the flat surfaces of two flat, annular, spacer members. The stack is then rotated about the longitudinal axis oriented in a substantially horizontal position while evenly heating the lens blanks to the phototropic development temperature of the glass. The stack of blanks is then vertically positioned while continuing the heating thereof and part of each of the blanks sags into the hollow of the spacer member therebelow to form such part of each blank into a curved configuration for an eyeglass lens.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1976Date of Patent: April 12, 1977Assignee: Corning Glass WorksInventor: Edwin J. Patent number: 4008033Abstract: A mask or face plate, having an orifice or opening formed therethrough of desired size and configuration, is positioned against the discharge face of an extrusion die. The mask restricts the flow of extrudable material through the die so that such material will conform to the size and configuration of the opening or orifice formed through the mask. The face of the mask adjacent the discharge face of the extrusion die is provided with an offset or stepped portion which surrounds the orifice formed through the mask and extends radially outwardly therefrom in a plane extending perpendicular to the axis or direction of extrusion. Preferably the offset planar face is radiused at its juncture with the orifice.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1975Date of Patent: February 15, 1977Assignee: Corning Glass WorksInventors: Robert G. Patent number: 4002448Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining the elevation of the fusion interface between batch and molten glass in an electric glass-melting furnace is disclosed. A probe is driven vertically downwardly through the batch by a combination of a motorized drive assembly and a pneumatic hammer device. When the bottom tip of the probe penetrates the fusion interface, a current path is established from a furnace electrode through the molten glass to the probe tip, with such current flow thereby giving indication that the probe tip has descended to the elevation of the fusion interface.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1976Date of Patent: January 11, 1977Assignee: Corning Glass WorksInventors: James L.
