  • Patent number: 4286030
Abstract: Battery separators, filters and other porous semi-rigid products are provided by a thermoset resin impregnated fibrous web containing cellulosic fiber, synthetic wood pulp, paper making staple long fiber and thermoset resin. The temperature for thermosetting can exceed the Vicat softening and even the melting temperature of the synthetic pulp without the loss of the flexibilizing effect of the synthetic pulp. By extension the teaching reaches to non-fibrous and non-porous materials. A process is also revealed.

  • Patent number: 4205123
Abstract: Battery separators with degradation resistant rib areas are produced from nonwoven mats of thermoplastic fibers by substantially fusing the fibers in raised regions of the mat. The fusion is progressively lessened toward the base of the rib. The rib is formed by the application of heat and pressure. The mat is also supplied with other important characteristics such as small pore size during treatment to compact its fibers.

  • Patent number: 4098047
Abstract: A method of sealing joints e.g. between concrete sections in road, bridge and parking deck structures against passage of water, dirt, etc., is described wherein recesses are formed in the concrete surface on each side of the joint and a specifically designed flexible elastic joint-spanning strip having openings therethrough is placed therein. A layer of rigid-setting grout is then placed over the strip, the openings in the strip when filled with grout serving to support the upper layer of grout and to prevent flexing and cracking thereof by vehicle traffic passing thereover, as well as to anchor the strip to the concrete bodies.

  • Patent number: 4092386
Abstract: A battery separator envelope is provided having two walls of battery separator connected together by a foam member. In a method, two walls of battery separator are secured on a mandrel by sandwiching the mandrel and the walls of battery separator in a jig. A foam bead is then extruded between the walls and the bead is tamped and squeezed to complete the final formation of the foam member. The apparatus includes the mandrel, jig, extruder and support for guiding the jig assembly past the extruder.

  • Patent number: 4081503
Abstract: Container closures are given the customary sealing gasket of plastics material by a two stage deformation of a pellet of the plastics material. In a first stage the material is partly deformed and is heated by direct conduction from a heated deforming member, and in the second stage a relatively cool final moulding die effects further deformation to impart the desired finished configuration to the gasket. The pressure member, and possibly also a workpiece support on which the upturned closure rests, is heated by means of a radiant heat source directing radiant heat onto a blackened roughened surface of the pressure member, and the workpiece support where applicable. The pressure member has a low-adhesion surface of polytetrafluoroethylene.

  • Patent number: 4043246
Abstract: An improved fastener of the sheet metal type for anchoring coverings to soft, not-fully cured cementitious masses, has a head or cap portion and a hollow shank portion comprised of a pair of generally U-shaped, opposed legs, one leg being substantially fully enclosed within the other, one such leg being rigidly fixed to said head, the other leg being hingedly connected to the head whereby the rigid leg ensures proper alignment of the head with the surface of the covering material and the hinged leg is caused to spread upon installation and thereby lock the fastener within the cementitious mass.

  • Patent number: 4044091
Abstract: A generally T-shaped flexible spacer for use in the formation of a flexible joint in concrete cladding for pipes, having a base flange and a compressible web extending generally perpendicularly from the base flange on one side thereof. In use, spacers are applied to a pipe at intervals, and are self supporting with the web radial of the pipe. When concrete is sprayed onto the pipe it forms a cladding in sections, between which the spacers provide compressible joints to accommodate bending of the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4041148
Abstract: Certain fluorinated dimethyl ethers have been found to possess the stability, the compatibility and sufficient freedom from deleterious physiological effects to be used as aerosol propellants in cosmetic, hygenic, pharmaceutical and other personal products. These compounds, bis(difluoromethyl) ether and perfluorodimethyl ether, are also free of the chlorine atoms believed responsible for some destruction of ozone in the upper atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4036388
Abstract: The invention relates to the gasketting of cap blanks, to be closed onto bottles or other containers. The gaskets lie across the more or less flat top of the cap blank and the invention is concerned with the peripheral part of the gasket, i.e. that part which occupies the corner of the cap between the flat top and the skirt. One kind of closing operation in which a gasketted cap blank is closed onto a bottle neck involves so-called "reform", i.e. a lateral pinching action at the top of the skirt. To aid closing the bottle cap symmetrically on the bottle, the peripheral part of the gasket includes a relatively flat step portion.

  • Patent number: 4025660
Abstract: In a method for coating the inside of a receptacle, fluid flow is controlled by a valve that has a torpedo shaped valving member in the middle of an enlarged passageway. The valving member contains an elastomeric sleeve that expands outwardly from a hinged area when compressed to form a line seal with the passageway. The valve is in the form of a multiple valve -- feeding, bypass and venting valving units all in one dielectric casting. Said casting is unitary with flange means operative to seal and mask said inside with respect to the external surface of the receptacle while the vent and coating material discharge means is functionally associated with said inside.

  • Patent number: 4000352
Abstract: A battery separator is provided that has a plurality of protrusions extending above the main surface thereof. The protrusions are arranged in an entirely new pattern which permits a minimum total area of the separator to be covered with protrusions and yet assures good contact with all areas of a battery's grid. This is done by arranging the protrusions in alternating rows in a manner blocking any openings between protrusions with which an element of the battery's grid could be registered.Another aspect includes a compressible battery separator having compressible embossments.
