  • Patent number: 8131613
Abstract: A method of setting pension plan investment policy, overlay derivative strategy and other pension policies, initiated by the calculation of a ratio for any existing, putative or alternative asset portfolio of a pension fund with specific reference to the pension plan's liabilities. The method's calculated ratio X/Y, referred to as the “pension fund liability allocation” or “pension liability allocation” for any portfolio under consideration indicates that X % of pension liabilities are hedged by an equal dollar amount of pension assets and Y % of pension liabilities are unhedged by the remaining pension plan assets. The ratio X/Y may also be used to assess and compare risk between pension plans of different entities. The pension liability allocation is a concise metric indicating the pension fund's degree of asset/liability mismatch risk.

  • Patent number: 8129679
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for operating a device having a high energy particle detector wherein the particles create first incoming traversal events, outgoing backscatter events, higher-order in and out events and incoming events caused by particles which backscatter out of the device, hit nearby mechanical structures and are scattered back into the device. Exemplary method steps include discriminating incoming traversal events from outgoing backscatter events, higher-order in and out events and incoming events by limiting dose rate to a level at ensures that separate events do not overlap and discriminating events from background and from other events based on total energy in each event; discriminating backscatter events from incoming traversal events based on electron path shape; or determining that a first event and a second event are coincident with each other and separating incoming form backscatter events based on electron path shape and energy level.

  • Patent number: 8125341
Abstract: A resonant circuit for use with a radio-wave detection system for the prevention of shoplifting or the like, which is formed on a flexible substrate and has a coil and capacitor circuit whereby the capacitor has an indented area in the dielectric of the capacitor to promote disablement of the circuit when exposed to a strong electromagnetic field. Upon exposure to a strong electromagnetic field, an electrical short forms across the dielectric of capacitor in the indented area. Because the short is fragile and can be opened by flexure of the circuit, an island of reinforcing material is formed in the indented area, such that when the substrate is flexed, the indented area remains rigid to protect the short. The indented area can be further stress-relieved by introducing a gap in the conductors forming the capacitor plates.

  • Patent number: 8124367
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for non-invasive measurement of skin cholesterol. More particularly, one aspect of the invention provides for a device to apply a detector reagent to a selected area of skin. Another aspect of the invention provides for an indicator device to produce a visual change corresponding to the amount of detector reagent that is bound in the skin. The method and apparatus of this invention typically do not require any instrumentation for certain embodiments, allowing the invention to be suitable for self-testing, for example, but not limited to, in the home environment. As such the invention is particularly useful to allow individuals to assess their risk of atherosclerosis and related vascular diseases.

  • Patent number: 8117874
Abstract: A device to protect an article from theft is disclosed. The device includes a pointed pin member to enable attachment of the device to the article to be protected from theft. A housing disposed within the device includes a floor and a wall tapering towards a confining end. The housing includes coaxial openings for insertably receiving the pin member. A ball clutch mechanism is located within the housing and includes a plurality of balls. As the balls are urged towards the confining end of the housing, they wedge between the tapering wall and the pin member to apply increasing radial pressure against the pin member to prevent it from being withdrawn from the device. The floor includes a member which deflects downwardly upon insertion of the pin member into the housing to apply a radial force against the pin member to frictionally engage it within the device.

  • Patent number: 8120773
Abstract: A spectroscopic analysis of a sample includes arranging the sample in a resonator cavity for transmitting cavity mode frequencies with a cavity mode frequency spacing, coupling pulsed source light into the resonator cavity, with the source light including source comb frequencies with a source frequency spacing, coupling pulsed transmitted light out of the resonator cavity, and spectrally resolved detecting the transmitted light with a detector device. The cavity mode frequency spacing and the source frequency spacing are detuned relative to each other, so that the transmitted light includes transmitted comb frequencies with a spacing larger than the source frequency spacing. The detecting feature includes collecting spectral distributions of the transmitted light in dependence on relative positions of the cavity mode frequencies and the source comb frequencies.
