  • Patent number: 5547330
Abstract: A positioner for moving an article along three mutually perpendicular axes includes a first slide coupled to a second slide by a first sliding joint, a third slide coupled to the second slide by a second sliding joint, and a base plate coupled to the third slide by a third sliding joint. The three sliding joints are mutually perpendicular. A first rack and pinion mechanism moves the first slide relative the second slide, a second rack and pinion mechanism moves the third slide relative to the base plate, and a carriage engaging a threaded shaft moves the second slide relative to the third slide. The pinion gears are mounted on shafts parallel to the threaded shaft and the three shafts extend from opposite sides of the positioner. A knob is attached to each end of the shafts for rotating the shafts to operate the positioner. The sliding joints are preferably dovetail joints, each of which includes a shim for adjusting the friction of the joint.

  • Patent number: 5546838
Abstract: A slitting machine including a first slitting stage for producing a plurality of interrupted cut slits in an advancing sheet having a leading edge and a trailing edge includes a drive pulley, a driven pulley, and a belt engaging the drive pulley and the driven pulley to provide a power path and a return path between the drive pulley and the driven pulley. The slitting machine also includes a mechanism translating rotation of the driven pulley to drive an upper slitting assembly and notched blades of a lower slitting assembly in synchronization with the advancing of the sheet by a sheet feeder.

  • Patent number: 5546822
Abstract: An automatic transmission incorporating a means for varying the ratio of input rotational velocity to output rotational velocity. A cylinder cam is mounted on a cam driver having a helical gear tooth thereon engaging corresponding helical internal gear teeth within the cylinder cam. The cylinder cam incorporates a continuously varying cam angle and is axially translatable along the cam driver; the cam is positioned on the cam driver automatically in accordance with torque requirements by the forces transmitted to the cam through the helical gears of the cam driver. Spherical cam followers mounted in a sphere cluster engage the cylinder cam; the clusters are mounted for rotation about an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the cam.

  • Patent number: 5545026
Abstract: A platen for applying pressure during hydroforming of polycarbonate and similar sheet material includes a flexible diaphragm for applying pressure in response to hydraulic fluid under pressure within a platen cavity and a diaphragm circumscribing sealing member for inhibiting seepage of hydraulic fluid and for preventing outward migration of the material of the diaphragm during a hydroforming operation. The junction between the sealing member and the diaphragm is conforming and void free to prevent hydraulic fluid flow therebetween. To help contain the hydraulic fluid within the platen cavity, a circumscribing inwardly extending foot of the diaphragm provides a mechanical and dynamic seal against an adjacent surface of the platen cavity.

  • Patent number: 5543604
Abstract: Radio frequency power for melting, sealing and welding plastic tubing compressed between a pair of manually or automatically actuated electrically conducting jaws of a hand held or fixed base tubing sealer is regulated by a pulse width modulator controlling the duty cycle of applied constant voltage pulses. A predetermined change of impedance of the tubing during compression and melting is detected to regulate the power applied and to ensure a weld of predetermined physical parameters. On completion of the weld, a first timer is reset and a further weld may be made. In the event of impedance mismatch, a second timer inhibits further application of power and resetting of the first timer. The use of the pulse width modulator enhances conservation of power and accommodates portability of the tubing sealer through use of rechargeable batteries as the power source.

  • Patent number: 5543919
Abstract: An apparatus (2) that performs high resolution thickness metrology on a thin film layer of a wafer (24), includes a filtered white light source that forms a collimated monochromatic light beam (19). The filtered white light source includes a halogen lamp (10), a condensing lens (12), a circular aperture (14), a collimator lens (16), and a narrow band filter wheel (18). The collimated monochromatic light beam (19) is passed through a beamsplitter (60), a second collimator lens (20), a third collimator lens (22), and a lenslet array (38), such that a corresponding array of sample points (39) on the surface of the wafer (24) are irradiated with focused monochromatic light. A reflectance pattern is formed at each sample point (39) due to coherent interactions in the monochromatic light as it is reflected within the wafer structure (24). An image of each reflectance pattern is reflected off the surface of the wafer (24) and is directed onto a detector array (31) of a charge coupled device (CCD) camera (30).

  • Patent number: 5542690
Abstract: A wheelchair for controlled environments includes a pair of tubular sideframes interconnected by a seat and a backrest. Sockets are welded to the sideframes for receiving pins on the underside of the seat. The position of the backrest is adjustable and the backrest is separated from the seat by a gap to avoid trapping contaminants. All metal components of the wheelchair have in integral outer surface. Tacky rollers clean the wheels as the wheelchair rolls and mechanically couple a power unit to the rear wheels. The power unit is controlled from a keyboard attached to a tubular armrest on the wheelchair. Control and signal cables from the keyboard are located within the armrest. A protective garment is provided with the wheelchair to contain contaminants in the clothing of the user and to protect the user.

  • Patent number: 5540848
Abstract: Water to be purified swirls about a source of ultraviolet radiation to kill any microorganisms contained therein and flows through a carbon filter cartridge mounted about the ultraviolet source to remove any chlorine and particulate matter. The outflow from the carbon filter is again subjected to ultraviolet radiation to kill any microorganisms entrained in the water emanating from the carbon filter. An ozone generator may be incorporated to entrain ozone with the inflowing water to enhance killing of any microorganisms present and to oxidize any undesirable compounds. The cartridge filter has its annular support member at one end disposed adjacent a first annular ridge to establish an annular seal between the support member and the first annular ridge. An axially moveable disk includes a second annular ridge disposed adjacent the annular support member at the other end of the cartridge filter to establish an annular seal therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5540377
Abstract: A solder ball placement system incorporating a placement head moveable vertically toward and away from a solder ball shuttle having a plurality of solder balls positioned thereon. A corresponding plurality of pickup tubes extend from the placement head and are connected to a vacuum source for attracting and holding a corresponding solder ball. The pickup tubes are mounted for limited vertical movement with respect to the placement head to allow the individual pickup tubes to extend into the placement head varying distances to accommodate for uneven placement of solder balls such as warpage of a workpiece or shuttle. The respective pickup tubes each incorporate a collar abutting against a vibrator plate that is actuated by an ejector solenoid when the vacuum is released and the solder balls are to be placed on a workpiece.
