Abstract: A security system comprises electronic means for generating a group of pulses of predetermined frequency, which group has a unique identity specified by the particular durations of its constituent pulses; means for transmitting that group of pulses; means for receiving that group of pulses; and means responsive to that received group of pulses only when it has said unique identity. Preferably the pulses are bursts of high frequency waves, and the means responsive to received pulses includes means for establishing tolerance intervals for the ends of corresponding pulses.
Abstract: An improved scraper to scrape the sludge from the bottom of a clarifying tank in a biological waste treatment plant. The scraper is Y-shaped, having two angularly spaced blades which move under the sludge at such an angle as to lift the sludge onto the blade such that the sludge urges the scraper in wiping relation with the bottom of the tank. The scraper is suspended by flexible cables from support arms which extend outwardly from an oscillating bridge moveable over the top of the clarifier in the clarifier tank drawing the flexible cables over support rollers as the bridge approaches the partition to lift the scraper upwardly as the scraper approaches the partition to prevent sludge from being trapped against the partition.
Abstract: An assembly includes two members, such as gyroscope gimbals, capable of limited relative rotation, and a flat, flexible conductor strip secured to the members, the axis of the strip extending between its securing positions wholly extending towards the common axis of rotation of the members the strip axis lying in a plane with the members at their mean relative orientation, and twisting as the members rotate therefrom.
Abstract: Thermal monitoring of a reactor core is carried out by utilizng coolant temperatures detected at the outlets of a plurality of fuel assemblies. The mean value of the "hot" and "cold" core outlet temperatures and the difference between these latter are established at each instant. An analog signal corresponding to the temperature difference between the coolant temperature at the outlet of said assembly and the mean core outlet temperature is delivered in respect of each fuel assembly. The signal is processed in order to initiate the appropriate safety actions.

In particular, the lead comprises a spherically-shaped, distal electrode adapted to be disposed near a selected segment of the spinal cord whereby maximum stimulation may be applied to the afferent nerves passing therethrough, a first conductor taking the form of a helically-wound coil extending from the distal electrode to a first tubular contact, and a second conductor disposed axially of the first-mentioned coil and forming an extension extending beyond the first-mentioned contact and terminated in a second tubular contact.
Abstract: The disclosure describes apparatus for handling detected errors in a data processing system. First means define and locate the detected errors and second means allow the attempted reexecution of the instruction being executed when the error is detected.
Abstract: Nickel-containing mattes are desulphurized down to low sulphur levels (less than 1%) in a multi-stage process effected in a single converter vessel. In the first stage, an oxidizing gas is blown into the molten matte to reduce the sulphur level to about 4 to 7% and in one or more subsequent stages, oxygen and a diluent are blown into the matte, with a peripheral flow of protective fluid to protect the tuyeres against wear. The diluent, which may be argon or steam for example, dilutes the sulphur dioxide in the matte.

Abstract: In a molten-salt reactor, a common vessel contains the reactor core, a neutron-moderating mass pierced by passages for the circulation of the fuel salt, at least one primary heat exchanger which is located close to the reactor core and through which the hot fuel salt passes after discharge from the core, pumps for circulating the cold fuel salt from the heat exchangers back into the reactor core. The free spaces defined within the reactor vessel between the core, the heat exchangers and the pumps except for the passages in which the molten fuel salt is circulated are packed with material which is compatible with the fuel salt.

Abstract: A multiplier circuit arrangement comprises two parallel paths for the same signal, one of the paths being associated with signal level adjusting means; and means responsive to inbalance of d.c. components including any in said parallel paths, the inbalance being in accordance with a d.c. signal in a third signal path, to produce a control signal for varying the signal level adjusting means to reduce the imbalance, so that a.c. components in said parallel paths will be unbalanced to an extent proportional to the d.c. signal in said third path.

Abstract: Motor rotated cams each actuate a lever and each lever is connected by a flexible non-extensible member, cable or chain, to the element of the machine to be controlled. A spring loaded bell crank lever is provided for each flexible non-extensible member and the non-extensible member passes over a pulley mounted at one end of an arm of the bell crank lever. Each arm of the bell crank lever actuates an electric switch connected to a motor whereby if the tension in the flexible non-extensible member increases or decreases excessively the appropriate one of the switches is opened to stop the motor.
Abstract: The central cavity of the furnace is provided from the periphery to the center with a first thermal insulation, at least one element of doped lanthanum chromite, a second thermal insulation and at least one element of stabilized zirconia or thoria which permits operation of the furnace at about 2000.degree. C.
Abstract: This invention is concerned with permutation locks having a wheel pack comprising a plurality of rotatable permutation discs, each having a recess which must be correctly aligned before the bolt of the lock can be withdrawn. One known method for determining the positions of the permutation discs is by analysis of X-radiation which has passed through the wheel pack parallel to the axis of rotation of the discs. In locks according to this invention, the opacity of the wheel pack to penetrating electromagnetic radiation along any line parallel to the axis of rotation of the discs is independent of their orientation.

Abstract: The manufacturing process of porous tubular members constituted by two coaxial layers comprises transferring of a layer intended to become the internal layer and being previously applied over a rigid core inside a tubular rough shape which is intended to constitute an external layer by compression of the rough shape over the core supporting the internal layer.
Abstract: Money counting machine comprising a switch which produces signal pulses corresponding to the counted number of coins, a plural-digit counter which receives said signal pulses from the switch and produces bit signals corresponding to digits representing the counted coins together with sequentially produced clock pulses corresponding to particular digits, NAND gates connected with the counter allow an output to pass therethrough and through a selector switch when the selected number of coins are counted, said output being used to effect state change of a flip-flop circuit for terminating the money counting operation.
Abstract: A method of fabricating a carrier support for integrated circuit chips to be mounted subsequently on a substrate. A flexible strip of an inextensible insulating material is provided with equidistant openings in the center of each of which a chip is to be mounted. One of the faces of this strip is covered with a conductive film, the said film is cut away to form in each opening interface conductors which overhang towards the center of the opening. Before the conductive film is cut away, the film is coated with a layer of photosensitive lacquer which is partly removed to enable the film to be laid bare in regions which, in each opening, form part of an open-centered zone which surrounds that portion of the film in which the free inner ends of the interface conductors associated with this opening are to be produced.
Abstract: A cautery protection circuit is disclosed for use with a heart pacemaker or generator circuit and comprises circuit elements for preventing those signals induced within the output portion of the heart pacemaker circuit by an electric field established by cautery procedures, from damaging the generator circuit or turning on the generator circuit at an undesired instant in time, whereby, otherwise, a pacemaker pulse signal may be generated to possibly induce fibrillation within the patient's heart.
Abstract: A thrust-bearing and guiding assembly which permits limited angular displment of a rotating shaft in any axial plane while preventing axial translation motion of the shaft comprises a bearing support articulated within a stator housing. The bearing support has two spherical sliding zones which form part of spheres having different centers, one zone being adapted to cooperate with a complementary surface of a ring which is endowed with freedom of sliding motion in the transverse direction with respect to the axis of the rotor within the stator housing.
