    Abstract: The invention is a pressure swing adsorption system. The pressure swing adsorption system has a plurality of primary adsorbent beds and at least one secondary adsorbent bed. The feed gas stream is flowed to a primary adsorbent bed loaded with an adsorbent that will preferentially adsorb certain components in the feed gas. Non-preferentially adsorbed components flow from the adsorbent bed during this time. Upon saturation of the adsorbent with the adsorbed components, the flow of feed gas is ceased. The adsorbent is fully loaded with the preferentially adsorbed component and there is feed gas in the void space between the adsorbent particles. This primary adsorbent bed undergoes regeneration by partial depressurization through the secondary adsorbent bed followed by a complete depressurization to a final lower pressure. There can be two or more primary adsorbent beds and there will be at least one secondary adsorbent bed.

    Abstract: A process for chill-treating, which is exemplified by a process for preparing a fermented malt beverage wherein brewing materials are mashed with water and the resulting mash is heated and wort separated therefrom. The wort is boiled, cooled, and fermented, and the beer is subjected to a finishing stage, which includes aging, to produce the final beverage. The improvement comprises subjecting the beer to a cold stage comprising rapidly cooling the beer to a temperature of about its freezing point in such a manner that ice crystals are formed therein in only minimal amounts. The resulting cooled beer is then mixed for a short period of time with a beer slurry containing ice crystals without any appreciable collateral increase in the amount of ice crystals in the resulting mixture. Finally, the so-treated beer is extracted from the mixture.

    Abstract: A static mixer conduit comprises a longitudinally elongated conduit having tabs that are arranged with respective first edges adjacent the conduit wall, and respective opposed second edges that are spaced radially inwardly from the conduit wall. These tabs are operable as fluid foils so that with fluid flowing through the conduit, greater fluid pressures manifest against the tab's upstream faces relative to reduced fluid pressures against their downstream faces. The resultant pressure difference in the fluid adjacent, respectively, the mutually opposed faces of each of the tabs causes a longitudinal flow of fluid through the conduit over and past each said tab, to be redirected. As a result of that redirection, there is introduced a radial cross-flow component to the longitudinal flow of fluid through the conduit.

The process comprises two stages of pressure swing adsorption, each stage being comprised of a plurality of interconnected adsorbent beds. A secondary product gas stream from the first stage of pressure swing adsorption is fed to the second stage of pressure swing adsorption. The second stage of pressure swing adsorption increases the helium content of this primarily non-helium product gas to more than about 50 percent by volume. This gas now with a helium content of more than about 50 percent by volume is fed along with the gas stream as the input gas to the first stage of pressure swing adsorption.
