Patent number: 6881951Abstract: Apparatus for delivering a constant radiant energy delta to calibrate a railway hot box detector. A wheel including an aperture is rotatingly supported within the apparatus. A temperature sensor senses the temperature of the wheel, and a radiant energy source is mounted within the apparatus such that the wheel, when rotated, periodically allows radiant energy to be transmitted directly from the energy source through the aperture to a hot box detector being calibrated. A processor is provided to receive the temperature sensed by the temperature sensor and operate the energy source at a radiant energy setpoint by determining the present temperature of both the energy source and the present temperature of the wheel and the desired radiant energy delta.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2003Date of Patent: April 19, 2005Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Mark Bartonek

Patent number: 6823835Abstract: A diesel engine, having a plurality of individually controllable fuel injected cylinders, is operated in a skip firing mode to reduce smoke emissions during low power operation. The system senses certain identified engine operating parameters and when these parameters exceed predetermined thresholds for a predetermined time, then the skip firing is implemented. In another embodiment, it is possible to implement several different skip firing patterns dependent upon engine performance. Upon implementation of skip firing, the engine timing angle is reset by a fixed angle and a multiplication factor is included in the speed loop integrator to ensure that the appropriate fuel volume value is injected into each cylinder immediately upon initiation of skip firing. Skip firing is then disabled when another set of predetermined conditions is satisfied.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2002Date of Patent: November 30, 2004Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Vincent F. Patent number: 6802221Abstract: The present invention is for a system (11) or method for conditioned based monitoring of a bearing assembly. The system (11) comprises a sensor (13) placed in proximity to a bearing assembly (12). The sensor (13) generates a signal indicative of the amplitude and frequency of the vibrational movement of the bearing assembly. A process (14) in communication with the sensor (13) receives the signal from the sensor (13) and generates spectral data representative of the bearing vibrational movement. A database (15) comprises data representative of an amplitude threshold, for at least one predetermined frequency, characteristic of a bearing fault. The processor (15) compares the spectral data to the amplitude threshold and generates a signal indication of the bearing assembly.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2002Date of Patent: October 12, 2004Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Robert A. Patent number: 6725134Abstract: A diesel locomotive includes a number of auxiliary subsystems operating in conjunction with the locomotive diesel engine and deriving their energy, from the diesel engine. Included among the subsystems are various cooling systems, the battery charging system, and the electrical generation system, comprising one or more alternators drivingly coupled to the engine shaft. Each of the subsystems includes a component that is activated when one or more operational conditions associated with the subsystem are met. For instance, an engine cooling system fan motor is activated when the coolant temperature exceeds a predetermined value. Similarly, a battery charger is activated when the battery voltage falls below a predetermined value, and an alternator blower is activated when the main or auxiliary alternator temperature exceeds a predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2002Date of Patent: April 20, 2004Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Eric Richard Dillen, Shawn Michael Gallagher, Norman Zethward Shilling

Patent number: 6718238Abstract: An apparatus and method for re-synchronizing a communications link between an on-board monitor located aboard a vehicle and a remote site. The occurrence of certain events may render the establishment of a communication link between the on-board monitor and the remote monitoring and diagnostics center impossible. To avoid this problem, after a successful download of information to the remote site, the on-board monitor starts a timer. When the timer expires, and if the on-board monitor has not received a call or successfully downloaded information to the remote site since the timer was started, the on-board monitor attempts to call the remote site for providing certain re-synchronization information thereto. The remote site thereafter uses this re-synchronization information to establish communications with the on-board monitor.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2000Date of Patent: April 6, 2004Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Juan Laguer-Diaz, Carl Frederick Conrath

Patent number: 6618394Abstract: A communication system is provided that includes a plurality of remote terminal units (RTUs) that communicate with a server via a network. The network provides communication paths to the RTUs via both a sessionless protocol and a switched connection protocol. Generally, the RTUs communicate via the network using the sessionless protocol. The network also includes a server. The RTUs share at least one account identifier that is coordinated by the server. Short messages are sent via the sessionless protocol. Longer messages are sent via the switched connection protocol using a shared account identifier. A corresponding method of operating the network is also provided. The use of a shared account identifier avoids the requirement of obtaining access accounts to the switched connection protocol for each of the RTUs, and is especially efficient and economical when the need to communicate longer messages is infrequent, but where each of a large number of RTUs require this capability.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1999Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Thomas N.
