Abstract: A method for performing an “AND” operation on two independent inputs in a fail-safe manner includes cascading two charge pumps to output a condition signal representing the “AND'ed” state of the inputs. Each independent input has an active state asserted by a waveform of predetermined frequency and duty cycle, and an inactive fail-safe state asserted by a zero voltage. The method includes supplying power to a first charge pump, supplying power from the first charge pump to a second charge pump, and supplying each of the independent inputs to one of the respective charge pumps. A condition signal is output using an output from the second charge pump. Additionally, the method verifies the correctness of the frequency and duty cycle of each independent input using a cross connection scheme. This method provides a high-power, low-loss, and low-cost electrical circuit for operating devices responding to specific voltages, for example, vital relays.
Abstract: A railway car brake system includes a pneumatic brake cylinder and a relay valve for controlling pressure in the brake cylinder. The relay valve is responsive to a pilot pressure which is generated by a pilot valve connected to the relay valve, the pilot valve including at least one piezoelectric element. The system also includes a controller connected to the piezoelectric element to control the pilot pressure and thereby control braking. The pilot valve releases braking upon loss of power to the at least one piezoelectric element to thereby provide a failsafe release of braking. The pilot valve may also include a first piezoelectric element for controlling fluid flow from a pressure source to the relay valve, and a second piezoelectric element for controlling fluid flow from the relay valve to atmosphere.
Abstract: A computer-based method and system for predicting impending failures in a system, such as a locomotive, aircraft, power plant, etc., having a plurality of subsystems is provided. The method allows for storing log data indicative of respective incidents or events that may occur as each of the subsystems is operative. A detecting step allows for detecting predetermined trend patterns in the log incident data. A mapping step allows for mapping each detected trend pattern into a respective prediction of an impending failure of a respective one of the subsystems of the locomotive, and an informing or outputting step allows for informing a respective user of the failure prediction so as to allow the user to take corrective action before the predicted failure occurs.

Abstract: An electrically powered vehicle includes an inverter mounted in the vehicle, the inverter having a plurality of high power IGBT modules for converting DC power to AC power for application to a plurality of AC electric motors connected in driving relationship to wheels on the vehicle. Each of the IGBT modules is mounted in thermal transfer relationship to an electrically isolated base plate and each base plate has a plurality of closely spaced, parallel slots formed across one surface with a plurality of fins fitted into the slots and extending from the base plate. The system includes apparatus for mounting the IGBT modules to a wall separating an electronics compartment from an air supply and air exhaust compartment. Air from an air supply plenum in the air supply compartment is directed into the fins extending from the IGBT base plate and exhaust through an exhaust conduit. The vehicle includes a blower to force air to flow through the fins extending from the base plate.

Abstract: A diesel engine includes a fuel injection control system communicating with a barometric pressure sensor and throttle position sensor. An elevation compensation controller adjusts engine speed and fuel injection timing at high altitudes in response to the sensed barometric pressure and engine throttle position. Engine speed is increased or decreased by predetermined values with changes in barometric pressure and throttle position to optimize engine performance and efficiency under various pressure conditions while reducing exhaust emissions.
Abstract: An AC motorized wheel arrangement includes a wheel frame including a flange for attachment to a truck body; a wheel hub; roller bearings for supporting the wheel hub on the wheel frame; a shaft; an AC motor attached to a portion of the wheel frame facing an inboard side of the wheel for turning the shaft; a transmission attached to a portion of the wheel frame facing an outboard side of the wheel and connected to the shaft and the wheel hub for turning the wheel hub; and a service brake mounted between the wheel frame and the wheel hub. In a ventilation arrangement, two wheel frames are attached to opposite outer sides of and axle box and two alternating current motors are positioned in the axle box with each motor frame attached to one of the wheel frames. The motor frames include holes for permitting air from the axle box to enter the motors, and an air outlet housing is positioned between the two motors for receiving air from the two motors and directing air out a rear opening of the axle box.

Abstract: A torque controller system provides improved torque distribution as a function of wheel diameter size in a vehicle propelled by electric traction motors. The system includes one or more torque processors each having a multiplier coupled to receive an input signal and configured to produce an output signal which is the product of the input signal and a variable multiplier value generated by a respective torque distribution generator based on a predetermined torque distribution control function.
Abstract: A diffuser for introducing gas in bubbles into liquid held in an aeration tank comprising a body member having a backing surface and passaging extending from a gas inlet to an outlet at the backing surface, and a flexible, gas permeable membrane covering the backing surface and secured at its periphery to the body member in sealing relationship thereto. The membrane is adapted to distend and move away from the backing surface upon delivery of gas under pressure to diffuser, with the gas flowing through the distended portion of the membrane and into the liquid in the form of relatively small gas bubbles, and adapted to collapse into engagement with the backing surface when gas under pressure is not delivered to the diffuser. A check valve comprising a movable valve member on the membrane and a valve seat on the backing surface enables flow of gas into the space between backing surface and the membrane, and blocks flow of liquid into the passaging in the body member.
Abstract: A roller cutter drill bit detachably secured to a drill string for delivering drilling fluid under pressure to the bit, comprising a plurality of bearing journals at its lower end and passaging extending down in the bit body to each of the journals for flow of the drilling fluid from the drill string to the journals. The bit further comprises a plurality of roller cutters, each having a bore adapted to receive a respective journal, and bearings in the annular cavity between each roller cutter and the respective journal for rotatably mounting the roller cutter on the journal. The drilling fluid when supplied in sufficient quantity flowing through the passaging, past the bearing means and exiting the bit in the bore via the bearing cavity for cooling and cleaning the bearings, but when supplied in insufficient quantity boring cuttings being allowed to enter the bearing cavity and fouling the bearings.
Abstract: A roller cutter drill bit adapted to drill bores in the earth comprising a bit body of steel having a plurality of bearing journals at its lower end, and a plurality of roller cutters, each having a recess therein receiving one of the journals. A radial bearing asembly for each roller cutter rotatably mounts the roller cutter on the journal, and an axial or thrust bearing assembly at the free end of each journal carries axial forces applied to the roller cutter during drilling, with the thrust bearing assembly thus being subject to rotary frictional forces and heating upon rotation of the drill bit during drilling. According to this invention, a heat dissipation member formed of material having higher thermal conductivity than steel is incorporated into the bit body. This material extends from the free end toward the attached end of the journal for conducting heat away from the thrust bearing assembly, thereby reducing bearing temperatures and providing longer bearing life.
