  • Patent number: 8335670
Abstract: A system for determining the calibration factor uncertainty of a radiation sensor. A computing device accepts a mathematical model of the sensor, sample, and other items affecting the calibration factor, wherein each known mathematical model parameter is assigned its normal dimensions or values and each not-well-known parameter is assigned a variable with an upper and lower limit, and a shape parameter that describes the parameter may vary within or about the limits. Random values consistent with the upper and lower limits and shape parameters for each of the variable parameters in the model are then selected, to create a mathematical model of one possible variation of source-detector measurement configuration. The selection and calibration factor computation are then repeated a large number of times and statistical parameters describing the calibration factor and uncertainty are then computed. Another embodiment performs the steps at different energies for spectroscopic detectors.

  • Patent number: 8322604
Abstract: A system and method for independently verifying a bank note processor's handling of circulating bank notes. Independent detectors are provided along the transport path of a bank note processing device. Also provided is at least one independent memory storage device for logging data from the independent detectors. As the note passes along the transport path, the independent detectors evaluate the note's fitness. The independent detector data is subsequently provided to the central bank or commercial organization for auditing of the bank note processor and for generating bank note statistics. Independent detectors may also be used on the transport path output bins to corroborate the other detectors and to verify the integrity of the sorting logic. Mirrored independent detectors allow for corroborating independent data. The invention is operable on any bank note processing device that performs at least a subset of a fitness determination on each note.

  • Patent number: 8322008
Abstract: A method of repairing a metallic artefact (40) with an open defect in or on a metallic surface or substrate of the metallic artefact includes cold forging the open defect to close the open defect and thereafter laser cladding the cold forged defect with a plurality of laser clad beads (44) applied to the metallic surface or substrate to cover the cold forged defect with a cladded metal layer. Advantageously, in-situ repair of fluid-filled vessels, pipes or the like is made possible by the repair method, in some instances eliminates the need to shut equipment down thereby reducing downtime and the cost associated with lost production.

  • Patent number: 8318229
Abstract: A method and apparatus to impart a random curvature to frying pre-formed snack pieces in a multi-layer fryer through the use of a contoured submerger. The shape of the contours of a contoured submerger imparts a random final curvature to each snack piece as snack pieces pass through a glass transition during frying. The contours are chosen so as to achieve a desired bulk density for the packaged fried snack products. Such method and apparatus are also useful in controlling the amount of change in bulk density or amount of settling of a packaged product during shipping or handling.

  • Patent number: 8319114
Abstract: A dual footprint mounting package for a surface mount power converter modules and its method of manufacture. Castellated regions are formed on the edge of the component package using the appropriate sized drill or milling bit. Edge plating is applied to the castellated surfaces to create edge pads. The edge plating provides electrical continuity between the edge pads and the SMT pads. Solder mask, or other materials, is applied to prevent solder from wicking between each SMT pad and its respective edge pad. Such component may be attached to a larger device PWB using either the edge pads or the SMT pads, or may even be attached using a combination of the two, such as in the event of a pad failure or other defect.

  • Patent number: 8301508
Abstract: A computerized system and method for conducting electronic online auctions, which creates a perception of scarcity in the marketplace enhancing the demand for and marketability of the goods while minimizing the exposure time of the goods in the marketplace. The present invention improves the efficiency for conducting the liquidation sale of goods by directing the goods to auction venues having specific market parameters that will generate the highest bid. The present invention also provides suppliers with a dynamic market for expeditiously liquidating merchandise without undue exposure of their goods to the general market. The present invention is easily scalable on both its supply and demand end. The liquidation sale of merchandise is controlled by limiting the amount of available merchandise supplied to each auction venue. Furthermore, the metering of the auction merchandise is controlled as a function of both the product characteristic and the auction parameters.

  • Patent number: 8284248
Abstract: The present invention is a method to detect defects in a process producing a food product by utilizing multivariate image analysis. In one aspect, an image is captured of the food product in the visible spectrum by on-line vision equipment, multivariate image analysis is performed on the image via an algorithm programmed onto a field programmable gate array to determine if a defect exists, a signal is sent to downstream sorting equipment, and the sorting equipment then rejects those food products that contain defects.

  • Patent number: 8281819
Abstract: The apparatus and method of the subject invention facilitates the filling of an air-permeable casement or shell with feather down material. The apparatus of the subject invention includes two chambers which are selectively connected to one another by means of a passageway. The subject invention further includes a mechanism for selectively inducing a partial vacuum in either chamber to facilitate the filling of article casements with feather down. By inducing a partial vacuum in the first chamber and connecting a supply hose to its access port, feather down may be conveyed from a supply container into the first chamber. By selectively opening the passageway and inducing a partial vacuum in the second chamber, the feather down is conveyed from the first chamber to the second chamber in a clean, efficient and controlled manner where it is contained within an air permeable casement formed over the passageway.

  • Patent number: 8277858
Abstract: The present invention is directed towards a method for making a healthy snack food having an appearance and taste similar to conventional fried snack products without the use of an oil-flying process. The method of the present invention includes the steps of providing food slices from a starch-based food or dough. The food slices can be blanched and a controlled amount of oil can be added to enhance final organoleptical properties. The food slices are then rapidly dehydrated to a much lower moisture content in a primary drying step that simulates conventional frying dehydration rates. A food snack, such as a corn or potato-based snack, produced by this method is a low-fat, ready-to-eat snack having the conventional texture and taste associated with fried snack products.
