  • Patent number: 6721845
Abstract: A reading algorithm for a set of mirrored disks sends groups of reads to one disk, then sends the next group to the other disk. This provides a more optimal use of disks for sequential reads than previous algorithms. An enhanced version uses snooping of the read requests and switches disks immediately for the read if the requests are not sequential, or within a given number of records of sequential. Additionally, the size of the requests can change the number of requests grouped together in the enhanced version.

  • Patent number: 6717947
Abstract: Isochronous data transfers guarantee data packets are received at a particular frequency and within a prespecified jitter-tolerance. Asynchronous data transfers guarantee data integrity by allowing missed or errant packets to be resent as many times as needed until an error-free packet may be reconstructed at the receiver. Isochronous transfers address real-time needs but do not address the data integrity issue. Asynchronous transfers address the data integrity issue but cannot guarantee error-free data packets will be available so as to meet a real-time constraint. The present invention provides method and apparatus enable isochronous data transfers with improved data integrity. Various link layer and transaction layer mechanisms are taught. An embodiment involving the IEEE 1394 bus specification is addressed in detail.

  • Patent number: 6713980
Abstract: A sunroof apparatus comprises a drive motor which actuates a roof glass and a control section. The control section rotates the drive motor reversely when the movement of the sunroof is obstructed by a caught foreign matter. When a drive voltage to be supplied to the drive motor becomes lower than a reference voltage, the control section determines that the drive voltage is abnormal and stops supplying the drive voltage to the drive motor to inhibit the drive motor from being operated. A first reference voltage is used as the reference voltage at the time the drive motor is stopped, and a second reference voltage lower than the first reference voltage is used as the reference voltage at the time the drive motor is operated. It is therefore possible to detect a foreign matter being caught before an abnormality of the drive voltage is determined.

  • Patent number: 6715030
Abstract: An apparatus and method for storing track layout information for performing update write operations is provided. In particular, the present invention provides an apparatus and method for storing track layout information based on cylinders which is then used to verify a quick write operation. A quick write operation is an update write operation in which track data need not be read from the physical storage device before performing an update of one or more records in the track. With the present invention, as tracks are written to or read from a storage device, such as a DASD or Non-Volatile Store (NVS), a cylinder table is populated with information identifying the tracks that meet criteria set for identifying tracks that are candidates for future quick write operations. The track layout information is stored on a cylinder basis.

  • Patent number: 6710990
Abstract: As technology in the semiconductor industry advances, semiconductor devices decrease in size to become faster and less expensive per function. Smaller semiconductor devices, particularly MOSFETs, are increasingly sensitive to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). ESD can either destroy or permanently damage a semiconductor device. Embodiments of the present invention assist in preventing ESD damage to semiconductor devices. An embodiment of the present invention utilizes a diode connected to the substrate terminal of a MOSFET. Under normal operation up to the maximum operating voltage, the diode and MOS devices are open and do not conduct. The diode triggers when an ESD pulse causes the reverse breakdown voltage of the diode to be exceeded. The resultant current switches a connected MOS device, operating in bipolar mode, to dissipate the damaging ESD pulse. The ESD pulse is shunted to ground, thereby avoiding damage to the rest of the device.

  • Patent number: 6705414
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring tubular stands between a substantially horizontal position on the catwalk and a substantially vertical position at the rig floor entry. In one embodiment of the invention, this is accomplished by moving bundles of individual tubulars to the process area, where a stand make-up/break-out machine, also called a bucking machine, makes up the tubular stands. The bucking machine aligns and stabs the connections and makes up the connection to the correct torque. The tubular stand is then transferred from the bucking machine to a stand storage area or to a trolley pick-up area. When additional stands are needed by the drilling operation, a trolley is moved into position over the trolley pick-up area to retrieve the stands previously placed in the trolley pick-up area. The stands are clamped to the trolley and the trolley is moved from a substantially horizontal position to a substantially vertical position at the rig floor entry.
