Patent number: 7449530Abstract: This invention is directed to processes of making polymer in the presence of a fluorinated hydrocarbon and recovering the polymer. The processes provided enable polymerization processes to be practiced with minimal fouling in the reaction system, and allows for the recovery of the fluorinated hydrocarbon and other hydrocarbons such as hydrocarbons for re-use in the process or hydrocarbon by-products from the polymerization process. The invention is particularly beneficial in the production of propylene-ethylene based copolymers using Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2005Date of Patent: November 11, 2008Assignee: ExxonMobil Chemical Patents Inc.Inventors: Robert O. Hagerty, Randall B. Laird, Michael A. Risch, Pradeep P. Shirodkar, Peijun Jiang

Patent number: 6909008Abstract: An activator for olefin polymerization catalysts is disclosed. One aspect of the activator is that it comprises a group-13 central atom connected to at least one fluorinated aryl ring that is itself substituted with a silyl acetylenic group. Some embodiments employ a neutral activator and others employ the activator as an anion coupled with a ligand-abstracting cation. These activators are discrete molecules.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2002Date of Patent: June 21, 2005Assignee: ExxonMobil Chemical Patents Inc.Inventor: George Rodriguez

Patent number: 6809168Abstract: The co-polymerization reaction of one or more olefin monomers, such as propylene, with &agr;,&ohgr;-diene units and the resulting copolymers are provided. More specifically, the copolymer may have from 90 to 99.999 weight percent of olefins and from 0.001 to 2.000 weight percent of &agr;,&ohgr;-dienes. The copolymer may have a weight average molecular weight in the range from 50,000 to 2,000,000, a crystallization temperature in the range from 115° C. to 135° C. and a melt flow rate in the range from 0.1 dg/min to 100 dg/min. These copolymers may be employed in a wide variety of applications, the articles of which include, for example, films, fibers, such as spunbonded and meltblown fibers, fabrics, such as nonwoven fabrics, and molded articles. The copolymer may further include at least two crystalline populations.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2003Date of Patent: October 26, 2004Assignee: ExxonMobil Chemical Patents Inc.Inventors: Pawan Kumar Agarwal, Weiqing Weng, Aspy K. Patent number: 6713574Abstract: This invention is a solution process for the preparation of ethylene-a-olefin-diolefin copolymers comprising contacting ethylene, one or more a-olefin monomer, and one or more cyclic diene monomer, with a catalyst composition comprising a bridged, bis(cyclopentadienyl) zirconium compound having an unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl ligand, a multiply substituted cyclopentadienyl ligand, said ligands bridged by a covalent bridging group containing one or more Group 14 element, and two uninegative, activation reactive ligands and a catalyst activator compound. The invention process exhibits high catalyst activity, high comonomer incorporation and high diene monomer conversion rates and is particularly suitable for the preparation of elastomeric ethylene-propylene or ethylene-propylene-diene monomer elastomers.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2002Date of Patent: March 30, 2004Assignee: ExxonMobil Chemical Patents Inc.Inventors: Rinaldo S. Schiffino, Donna J. Crowther
