Abstract: A system is described for indicating the appropriate time to perform preventive maintenance operations upon a machine tool. The system includes a signal generator which is to be connected to the machine tool to generate signals whenever the tool is in operation. These signals are integrated and a threshold sensitive detector responsive to the output of the integrator produces a control signal. The control signal is then applied to a audio/visual indicating means to notify operators of the advent of a particular preventive maintenance operation to be performed upon the machine tool.
Abstract: A plasticized polyacrylonitrile composition and a film thereof containing a plasticizing proportion of a liquid polyether prepared by reacting ethylene oxide and propylene oxide with at least one monohydric alcohol active hydrogen compound initiator having about one to about ten aliphatic carbon atoms to yield a heterized copolymer. The invention is also concerned with a continuous process for the introduction of the plasticizing proportion of said liquid polyether into the polyacrylonitrile aquagel film.

Abstract: A flexible film laminate and retortable pouch therefrom comprising a first layer of heat-sealable polyolefin film; a first adhesive layer contacting said polyolefin film, said first adhesive being a maleic acid anhydride adduct of an ethylene-propylene copolymer; a second adhesive layer contacting said first adhesive layer, said second adhesive being a combination of a styrene-butadiene block copolymer and a random terpolymer, said second adhesive also contacting; a second layer of a polyacrylonitrile homopolymer film; said laminate having been subjected to ultra violet radiation through said second layer to an extent resulting in a greater bond strength between layers than in the absence of said radiation.
Abstract: A blend, useful as a molding composition, of an unsaturated polyester with a mixture of isomeric methyl ethenyl benzenes containing a high proportion of the para-isomer.
Abstract: Radiation curable coating vehicles, suitable for transfer coating application and strippable from a variety of carrying webs, can be produced by proper selection of coating ingredients and cured either by actinic radiation or electron beams. Potential crosslink density (as herein defined), glass transition temperature and the relative presence or absence of specific adhesion-promoting functional groups are controlled to arrive at a coating composition having the desired degree of adhesion to the substrate to be coated and the carrying web which is to transfer the coating composition to that substrate.

Abstract: A series of transition metal complexes, having stability at relatively high pH, have been utilized as templates for the synthesis of ZSM-5 type zeolites.
Abstract: Reaction products of substituted succinic acid or anhydride with metal hydroxides or amines are highly effective anti-rust agents for lubricating oils or greases prepared therefrom.
Abstract: Alpha-picoline is produced by the ammoniation of phenol over a zeolite having a silica:alumina ratio of at least 12 and a constraint index of 1 to 12. The preferred zeolite is ZSM-5. Aniline is produced as a co-product and the alpha-picoline may be separated by distillation or extraction.
Abstract: A system for producing coated, oriented polymer film. Methods and apparatus are provided for forming a continuous film of the polymer with water uniformly dispersed therein and applying an aqueous coating composition to at least one surface of the film. The film is oriented and dried under constraint to remove water from the substrate film and coating.
Abstract: A method and system for monitoring the ore grade of an uranium bearing fluid mixture. A sample of the fluid mixture is irradiated with neutrons. Delayed fission neutrons resulting from the fission of uranium present in the sample are counted as an indication of uranium ore grade.
Abstract: There is provided a blend of poly(p-methylstyrene) with a small amount of a polyfunctional monomer, such as trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate. The blend can be formed into shaped articles, such as food containers, which can be crosslinked by irradiation at low doses. Such irradiated articles are resistant to microwave oven conditions.
Abstract: Continuous film production from a high pressure feed stream is achieved in a system which provides methods and means for maintaining pressurized gas in an extrusion zone wherein the extrudate may be cooled to form a solid polymeric film. The product film is withdrawn from the extrusion zone continuously through a standing liquid column in fluid communication with the extrusion zone. The film is passed downwardly into a liquid leg below the extrusion zone and upwardly through the liquid column, which has an upper exit end elevated above the pressurized zone thereby exerting super-atmospheric pressure. The product is recovered from the liquid sealing medium, advantageously water, at ambient pressure. Hot aqueous solutions of polyacrylonitrile may be extruded at elevated pressure onto a cooled casting drum in a gaseous environment wherein flashing of the hot solvent is prevented.
Abstract: A source of fast neutrons is pulsed to irradiate the formations surrounding a borehole with neutrons to produce inelastic neutron scattering in metallic materials located within the formations. Gamma-rays emitted from the formations in response to the inelastic neutron scattering from the metallic materials is detected as an indication of the presence of such materials within the formations.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the dealkylation of durene resulting from a methanol to gasoline conversion by contacting a durene-containing fraction with zeolite ZSM-12 at elevated temperatures and pressures.
Abstract: Marine seismic data is gathered by a single vessel beyond the range of a conventional towed seismic sensor cable through the use of expendable sensors and hard wire transmission cables. The vessel tows a submerged platform adapted to carry several inexpensive seismic sensors and very small diameter multiconductor cables which are controllably released from the platform by appropriate equipment on the towing vessel. Signals generated by each sensor are transmitted back to the towed, submerged platform through the small diameter cable connected to each sensor and are transmitted by other means from the platform to the towing vessel for retransmission, recording and/or display. Each sensor transmits a signal back to the platform until its small diameter cable is completely deployed at which time the cable breaks and is abandoned together with the sensor.
Abstract: The vertical conformance of a steam drive process is improved and steam override reduced by utilizing a solvent push-pull process in the lower portion of the formation adjacent the production well. Steam is injected into the injection well with production of fluids from the production well. The production well contains two flow paths from the surface, the first being in fluid communication with the upper portion of the formation. Production is continued until there is a water breakthrough from the formation via the first flow path in the production well. After production via the production well is terminated, a predetermined amount of solvent is injected into the lower portion of the formation via the second flow path in the production well while continuing to inject steam into the injection well.
Abstract: A fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process and apparatus using a riser and a reactor for cracking of petroleum feeds in the presence of a catalyst and a regenerator for regenerating the spent catalyst are improved by providing a downflow riser. The downflow riser assures uniform distribution of the catalyst throughout the feed, decreases contact time of the catalyst with the feed and decreases the amount of coke made in the process.
Abstract: Biaxially oriented polyacrylonitrile film is treated with corona discharge and laminated on one or both sides with olefin polymer or copolymer by extrusion coating. The resultant laminate has excellent flexibility as measured by the Gelbo flex test. The laminate is readily heat sealed and is useful in packaging application.
Abstract: Oil may be recovered from viscous oil-containing formations including tar sand deposits by providing at least one injection well and at least one spaced-apart production well which extend downwardly from the surfaces and which extend to, and generally horizontally through, the bottom of the oil-containing formation with fluid communication of the horizontally extending portions of each well with the oil-containing formation. Solvent is injected into the injection well and fluids including oil are recovered from the production well until the fluid recovered contains an unfavorable amount of solvent, preferably at least 90 percent. After injection of the solvent is terminated, both the injection well and the production well are shut-in and the formation is allowed to undergo a soak period for a predetermined time, preferably for a time of between 2 to 20 days per foot of formation thickness.
