Patent number: 5566755Abstract: A method is disclosed for recovering methane from a solid carbonaceous subterranean formation having a production well in fluid communication with the formation and an injection well in fluid communication with the formation. In the method an oxygen-depleted effluent, produced by a cryogenic separator is injected into the formation through the injection well. A first methane-containing gaseous mixture is recovered from the formation through the production well during at least a portion of the time the oxygen-depleted effluent is being injected into the formation. The first methane-containing gaseous mixture has a first methane-desorbing gas volume percent. The injection of oxygen-depleted effluent is ceased and thereafter a second methane-containing gaseous mixture is recovered from the formation which has a second methane-desorbing gas volume percent which is less than the first methane-desorbing gas volume percent.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1995Date of Patent: October 22, 1996Assignee: Amoco CorporationInventors: John P. Patent number: 5489739Abstract: A method for disposing of radioactive material in a disposal area, which is accessible from the surface through a wellbore which contains a wellbore fluid. The method comprises the steps of: encapsulating the radioactive material within a container, placing the container in the wellbore, passing the container through the wellbore to the disposal area, and equalizing the differential pressure between the wellbore pressure and internal pressure within the container as the capsule descends within the wellbore, prior to the differential pressure reaching a magnitude which would exceed a design collapse rating of the container.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1993Date of Patent: February 6, 1996Assignee: Amoco CorporationInventors: Angela S. Curry, Keith A. Seilhan, Charles A. LeBlanc

Patent number: 5454666Abstract: A method for disposing of unwanted gaseous fluid components, such as carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and oxides of sulfur within a solid carbonaceous subterranean formation, such as a coal seam. The unwanted gaseous fluid components are typically contained in a gaseous process effluent stream which is introduced into the formation.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1994Date of Patent: October 3, 1995Assignee: Amoco CorporationInventors: Joseph J. Chaback, Dan Yee

Patent number: 5443118Abstract: A method is disclosed for recovering crude oil from a subterranean formation. The invention utilizes the introduction of water containing a salt, which is capable of decomposing to generate an oxidant, into the formation. Decomposition conditions and ignition conditions are established within the formation to cause the salt to decompose and to cause ignition within the formation. The in-situ combustion which results assists in the recovery of crude oil from the formation.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1994Date of Patent: August 22, 1995Assignee: Amoco CorporationInventors: Demetrios V. Yannimaras, Mark F. Spencer
