  • Patent number: 4362496
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for forming multi-directionally oriented plastic articles by accumulating a body of plasticized thermoplastic material in an amount at least sufficient to form the desired article, and advancing the material under pressure from said body forward and through an orifice. The material is non-linearly sheared while being advanced from the body toward the orifice and prior to its issuance from the orifice to induce orientation stresses into the material, and during shearing the material is at a temperature which is conducive to orientation. The orientation stresses are frozen into the material when the material is formed to a desired configuration exteriorly of the orifice by known plastic forming techniques, such as extrusion, blow molding, injection molding, compression molding, thermoforming and the like. During such forming, additional orientation stresses may be induced in the material and superimposed upon those stresses previously introduced thereinto.

  • Patent number: 4339409
Abstract: A method is disclosed for blow molding poly(ethylene terephthalate) preforms, such as injection molded parison, to achieve exterior surface embossed designs on blown containers without using profiled blow mold cavity walls. In the method, a raised profile is molded or otherwise formed on the exterior wall of the preform, defining a preform wall portion having embossed areas. Then the entire preform is heated to blowing temperature and it is also disclosed that when the raised portion is at the same time raised to a higher temperature the embossed design of the preform is opacified by crystallization without crystallizing the balance of the preform. Thereafter, the preform is blow molded under conditions such that the poly(ethylene terephthalate) material strain hardens in order to cause the different wall thicknesses to expand and stretch essentially proportionately.

Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus and a method for forming multi-directionally oriented plastic articles by shearing a thermoplastic material in a non-linear shear pattern while the material is at a temperature conducive to orientation and further processing the material by known plastic forming techniques to form an article in which the material remains oriented. More specifically, thermoplastic material is plasticized and accumulated in an amount at least sufficient to form the article, and the material is expressed under pressure from the accumulated body to and through an orifice. The material is non-linearly sheared prior to its issuance from the orifice to induce orientation stresses into the material, and, during shearing, the material is at a temperature which is conducive to orientation.

  • Patent number: 4323411
Abstract: A method for applying prefabricated parts for reinforcing, supporting, forming, reshaping or labeling to articles blow molded from a thermoplastic material. A hot parison is blown in a mold into a preform having a shape slightly smaller than the finished article. The preform is then removed from its mold and the prefabricated part is attached to the preform. The preform is then blow molded to impart the finished shape to the article and to embed the prefabricated part into the article.

  • Patent number: 4268296
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for the manufacture of glass film having a thickness not in excess of 0.003 inches and accomplished by drawing the film through a narrow slot-like orifice. The walls of the orifice are defined by an electrically conductive, hot glass resistant metal and electrical currents are introduced into the metal walls of the orifice to effectively maintain the central portions of the orifice walls at a higher temperature than each of the two lateral end walls of the orifice, thereby producing a temperature differential in the drawn film on the order of 40.degree. F. between the edges of the film and the central portions of the film.
