  • Patent number: 6763663
Abstract: An injector includes a plurality of flat, circular plates which provide fuel delivery and cooling of the injector. Fuel delivery passages in the plates have swirl chambers and spray orifices which are formed by chemical etching. A pair of fuel delivery plates define a fuel cavity therebetween, and include a plurality of radially-outwardly extending spokes, with the spokes from one fuel plate in adjacent, surface-to-surface relation with opposing spokes from the adjacent fuel plate. A fuel passage is defined between each of the opposing spokes, leading from the fuel cavity to a fuel outlet opening at the distal end of each spoke. A fuel tube delivers fuel to the fuel cavity between the plates, from where the fuel is then directed through the outlet openings. Downstream plates shape the fuel into appropriate sprays for ignition. An upstream cooling plate assembly directs air against the upstream fuel plate, and radially outwardly along the spokes of the upstream plate.

  • Patent number: 6684896
Abstract: A valve assembly includes a valve with a bobbin/valve body, a solenoid and a plunger. The bobbin/valve body is formed in one piece, and defines all of the valve's inlet/outlet ports and forms the entire support structure for the solenoid and the plunger. The valve may be connected to a manifold by press-fitting port nipples of the valve into corresponding channels in the manifold. The manifold is formed of a resilient, elastomeric material, and the port nipples include radial projecting barbs, which enable the valve to be fluidly-connected to the manifold without additional O-ring seals or other mechanical sealing devices. Fittings with barbs can likewise be press-fit in other channels of the manifold to connect the valve assembly with fluid lines or other components in the fluid system. The fittings can also be provided unitary with the manifold, and/or adhesively attached to the manifold and/or to the fluid lines and other components.

  • Patent number: 6685453
Abstract: A fluid transfer machine includes a positive displacement, rotary-type pumping mechanism driven by a drive shaft. The drive shaft is lubricated and cooled by locating the drive shaft in a primary flow path in the machine. Fluid is directed from the inlet through a passage that intersects a cavity surrounding the drive shaft, at a location between a pair of journal bearings. The fluid then continues directly to the suction side of the pumping mechanism. The drive shaft could also be located on the pressure side of the pumping mechanism. The primary flow cools and lubricates the drive shaft and drive shaft bearings, and reduces the size and complexity of the machine, as additional cooling and lubrication flow passage(s) are not required.

  • Patent number: 6675833
Abstract: A quick-connect coupling includes a male half and a female half, where the female half includes a locking mechanism to couple the male half to the female half; and a valve assembly, which when the male half is coupled to the female half, opens a flow path through the coupling. The valve assembly includes an upstream, pressure balanced secondary valve and a downstream primary valve. The secondary valve maintains the downstream portion of the female coupling half at zero pressure, such that the male half can be easily connected. When the male half is removed, the primary and secondary valves of the valve assembly close to prevent fluid flow through the coupling. The female coupling also allows pressure to escape from the downstream end of the female half to atmosphere, should there be leakage around seals in the secondary valve after the female coupling half is disconnected.

  • Patent number: 6627079
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for filtering a liquid. The filtering is conducted using one or several filter elements in the filter housing, the operation being based on the alternation of filtering stages and air flushing stages. According to the invention, upon transferring from the flushing stage to the filtering stage, the filter housing is filled with liquid so that the liquid pushes the flushing air in the housing from the upper end of the housing into a separate air container so that air is compressed to a higher pressure in the container. During the filtering stage, air remains in the container, and after the filtering stage, air compressed in the container is allowed to push liquid out of the filter housing with its pressure. Further, the connection between the air container and the filter housing can be arranged so that air compressed in the container participates in the backflushing of the filter elements.

  • Patent number: 6622488
Abstract: A fuel injector for a gas turbine engine of an aircraft has an inlet fitting, a fuel nozzle, and a housing stem with an internal conduit fluidly interconnecting the nozzle and fitting. The fuel nozzle includes a fuel swirler, which includes a plenum for receiving fuel from the conduit. A plurality of fuel passages direct fuel from the plenum to discharge orifices. The downstream ends of the passages are angled such that a swirl component is imparted to fuel exiting the discharge orifices. The swirling fuel is then applied to a prefilmer, which outwardly surrounds the fuel swirler. The passages in the fuel swirler are arranged such that the discharge orifices surround the entire nozzle for the even distribution of fuel. The plenum and passages are dimensioned and configured to receive and distribute the fuel for uniform spray patternization and low pressure drop, which provides improved combustion and flame stability.

  • Patent number: 6561171
Abstract: A crankcase breather for an internal combustion engine has a housing including inlet ports which receive crankcase emissions from the engine, and an outlet port which directs oil-free gases back to the engine. A pair of filter elements are supported in the housing in adjacent relation. One filter element is a course filter to remove larger particulate in the emissions. The other filter element is a finer filter to remove smaller particulate, and to coalesce oil. A sump channel under the elements collects oil coalescing on the elements, and a drain opening in the channel to returns the oil to the engine. A second sump collects oil coalescing on the downstream surface of the second filter. An outlet port with a check valve in the second sump prevents oil being drawn into the breather on the clean side of the elements, but allows collected oil to drain back to the engine.
