  • Patent number: 8199013
Abstract: A system for detecting electronic article surveillance (“EAS”) marker shielding includes an EAS subsystem, a metal detector, a people counting system, and a processor. The EAS subsystem operates to detect an EAS marker in an interrogation zone. The metal detector operates to detect a metal object in the interrogation zone. The people counting system operates to detect one or more people in the interrogation zone. The processor is electrically coupled to the EAS subsystem, the metal detector and the people counting system. The processor is programmed to receive information outputted from the people counting system and information outputted from the metal detector to determine whether to generate an alarm signal based on the presence of EAS marker shielding.

  • Patent number: 8199922
Abstract: A system and method for providing microphonic isolation on a transmission line. The transmission line has a first part and a second part. The first part of transmission line carries a data signal and a microphonic signal. The microphonic signal has frequencies that include those in a range of substantially 20 Hz to substantially 20 kHz. The system includes an isolation apparatus. The isolation apparatus has an input in electrical communication with a first part of the transmission line, an output in electrical communication with the second part of the transmission line, and a filter in electrical communication with the input and the output. The filter is arranged to substantially remove the microphonic signal received at the input from first part of transmission line and pass the data signal to the output.

  • Patent number: 8199727
Abstract: A system and a method in a wireless network utilizing session initiation protocol (SIP) for call control. The SIP payload (SDP) contains a list of available transcoders (codecs) to coordinate transcoder selection to allow for the minimization of transcoders. An additional aspect of the embodiment of the present invention includes a serving MSCe that is operable to determine whether to initiate ringback to the calling party. If ring back is to be initiated, ringback can be initiated from the serving MSCe or from a network element supporting the calling party. The call negotiation process according to the described embodiment of the invention eliminates the requirement for any transcoding in specific situations to result in the number of transcoders used in the voice bearer path to be reduced to 0 (TrFO, Transcoder Free Operation) or to 1 (RTO, remote transmitter operation).

  • Patent number: 8189575
Abstract: A scalable Ethernet switch includes modules which can be interconnected to provide a single, virtual switch. The modules may be of uniform physical size and shape relative to a standard telecommunications rack. When greater capacity is required, an additional module is mounted in a rack and interconnected with the other modules, e.g., in a bi-directional ring. Enhanced port density is provided by interconnecting the modules with 12 GbE links which operate on standard 10 GbE wiring and connectors. Consequently, throughput between modules in increased relative to standard 10 GbE links without increasing form factor. Further, transmission power control can be implemented such that modules of the virtual switch may be physically adjacent or separated by distances of several meters.

  • Patent number: 8179849
Abstract: An apparatus for communication using a wireless communication network includes an interleaver and a transceiver. The interleaver co-exists with a localized transmission arrangement if the localized transmission arrangement is present and interleaves data packets for a distributed transmission arrangement by mapping a set of logical indices to a set of physical resource blocks. The set of logical indices include sequential logical indices that are separated by a maximum spacing within the set. The transceiver is in electrical communication with the interleaver. The transceiver is operable to transmit and receive data packets through the wireless communication network.

  • Patent number: 8174388
Abstract: A combination Electronic Article Surveillance/Radio Frequency Identification (“EAS/RFID”) tag and method and system for deactivating said combination EAS/RFID tags without the need to physically contact the tag with a deactivation device. The EAS/RFID tag replaces the conventional diode with a non-linear device such as a capacitor with a given breakdown voltage threshold. Inducing a predetermined voltage across the capacitor results in destruction of the capacitor rendering the EAS/RFID tag undetectable in the interrogation systems.

  • Patent number: 8170155
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for measuring channel quality over which has been transmitted a sequence of symbols produced by encoding and constellation mapping a source data element sequence. The method includes receiving a sequence of received symbols over the channel whose quality is to be measured. The sequence of received symbols is de-mapped based on a first channel quality indicator previously transmitted to a transmitter of the sequence of symbols. The method also includes decoding the de-mapped symbols to produce a decoded output sequence. In some embodiments, the decoding may be based on the first channel quality indicator. The method also includes re-encoding the decoded output sequence to produce a re-encoded output sequence. The method also includes correlating the de-mapped symbols with the re-encoded output sequence to produce a second channel quality indicator.

  • Patent number: 8166183
Abstract: The invention is directed to optimizing setup of a VCAT connections using (largest) CCAT containers so as to minimize the number of cross-connection commands needed to enable data transfer. A system and method are provided for enhancing VCAT networks to include faster service restoration rates and faster connection setup times. One embodiment includes expanding available VCAT timeslots to include available CCAT timeslots. A routing and signaling control module alerts a source network element, internal network elements and a destination network element that the data transmission includes VCAT payloads rather than the expected CCAT payloads. By issuing this alert, the routing and signaling control module instructs an end-point monitoring function to overlook any mismatch between the expected CCAT rate and the received VCAT traffic. Otherwise, if the mismatch is not overlooked, then the end-point monitoring function will squelch the received VCAT traffic, which terminates the data communication.

  • Patent number: 8165150
Abstract: A method and system for position location of clients in wireless local area networks. (WLANs). The position location technique utilizes time-of-flight (TOF) measurements of signals transmitted from a client to a number of wireless access points (APs) or vice versa to determine distances. Round-trip time (RTT) measurement protocols are used to estimate TOF and distances between the client at an unknown position and the WLAN APs. The method and system improves positioning accuracy by identifying and mitigating non-line-of sight (NLOS) errors such as multipaths. Trilateration algorithms are utilized in combination with median filtering of measurements to accurately estimate the position of the client.
