  • Patent number: 6473446
Abstract: An electric furnace includes a stationary lower shell having a sloping floor extending downwardly to a tap hole to always maintain a sufficient ferrostatic head three times the tap hole for slag free tapping. The configuration of the refractory for containing a heat, is sufficient to maintain a liquid metal heel of at least 70% of the heat before tapping for maintaining flat bath operation during refining a steel melt. An upper furnace shell is supported on the lower furnace shell and a furnace roof is supported by the upper furnace shell. The entire furnace is mounted on a furnace transfer car that is anchored for stationary operation but moved to a furnace exchange position for servicing any of the components making up the furnace. The furnace roof and/or upper furnace shell may be supported at a furnace operate position while the lower furnace shell is transported to the furnace exchange position.

  • Patent number: 6463865
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implanting a soil conditioner such as a water-absorbing substance into the soil underlying a grass or turf surface. The apparatus includes narrow vertical blades rotatably supported by the apparatus for creating deep notches extending to the soil for which perceptibility is limited and a dispensing system having tubes which are aligned with the blades to deliver the substance into the soil via the deep notches created by the blades. A drive assembly links a blade shaft supporting the blades with a feed bar slidably supported in a container channel to convert rotation of the blade shaft into reciprocated sliding of the feed bar to periodically bring openings in the feed bar into confronting relationship with openings in the container channel.

  • Patent number: 6435867
Abstract: There is provided a cast tire for use with a furnace roller. The cast tire has at least three of annular spaced pockets located around the central opening of the tire on each radial side. When the tires are installed on a furnace roller with arbor means, pockets are inserted into the annular spaced pockets. The pockets are secured only to the arbor means of the roller. Rotation of the arbor means results in rotation of the cast tires by transmission of torque from the pockets to the to the tire without direct attachment of the tire to the arbor means.

  • Patent number: 6389054
Abstract: A scrap charging apparatus for an electric arc furnace uses a skip hoist to supply scrap to a holding bunker having diverging end walls extending between converging side walls. The containment space for the scrap is increased by this wall arrangement and provides an impetus in the bunker for scrap flow to an underlying scrap delivery chute. The scrap delivery chute is formed by an elongated scrap carrying trough having a greater width than the exit width of the scrap holding bunker for delivering scrap to a charging opining for an electric arc furnace A superstructure supporting the scrap holding bunker at an elevated and lateral spaced location from the electric arc furnace. A ram controlled by a drive incrementally advances scrap along the scrap delivery chute for introducing successive preselected volumes of scrap to a charging opining for an electric arc furnace.

  • Patent number: 6381827
Abstract: A high temperature bolting system for clamping steam turbine housings and similar high temperature parts together while operating at a temperature of 800° F. to 1200° F. An elongated fastener shank and housing material have similar coefficient of thermal expansion. The shank has a tensile strength several times greater than the housing to maintain a clamping force during thermal excursions. The diameter of the shank is reduced due to the large creep strength difference between the elongated fastener shank and the clamped parts. The reduced shank diameter allows an increased in the clamping load by providing an increased surface area in the clamped part. A stress generating flange is provided with jackbolts to establish the clamping load at room temperature. A threaded sleeve is interposed between the threads at the end of the shank and the threads of the housing so that the housing threads have a sufficiently large area for withstanding the clamping load.

  • Patent number: 6341617
Abstract: A water mixer for a sink, the water mixer comprising a mixing chamber having a hot water tap pillar and cold water tap pillar for controlling a supply of hot and cold water to respective inlets of a mixing chamber. Outlets from the mixing chamber supply water to the hollow interiors of the hot and cold water tap pillars which are interconnected by a mixer conduit joined with a nozzle for discharging water to the sink. The mixing chamber is provided with a shuttle valve formed by a truncated conical poppet valve receivable in a valve seat in response to water pressure from hot and or cold mixing chamber acting of a plate member connected by shaft to the poppet valve. The pressure on the plate develops when a spray head valve is operated to cause a flow of water from the mixing chamber to the spray head.

  • Patent number: 6279371
Abstract: A hand-held tool for forming a rivet head at the plain end of a rivet includes an elongated handle having an elongated internal cavity with a guide wall surface extending to an adjacent guide wall surface in an insert having an end wall. The end wall is provided with a predetermined thickness and contains an aperture to house a shop head formed on the plain head of a rivet. An inertia block is slidably guided by the guide wall surfaces of the handle and insert for reciprocation between a displaced position remote from the end wall and a position for contact with the end wall. A spring located in the elongated handle urges the inertia block against an end of a rivet when protruding from the aperture in the end wall and arrests recoiling movement of the inertia block after impact with a rivet end in a direction away from the end wall.

  • Patent number: 6263764
Abstract: Jackbolts for multi jackbolt tensioner embody a thread construction which taper from a maximum diameter adjacent to torque receiving end of the jackbolt when threadedly engaged with a threaded opening in the outer peripheral part of a jackbolt body. The threads of the jackbolt have a different thread pitch than the threads in the jackbolt body and the tooth flank of the jackbolt threads for an angle with the tooth flanks of the thread in the jackbolt body. By this thread construction, there is formed a helical volume of ever increasing size along the jackbolts commencing at a metal to metal relation at the torque receiving end. Stressing of the jackbolt closes the helical volume bringing the threads to a metal to metal load transfer relation. The end of the jackbolts has a protruding central end portion that elastically flattens under stress to reduce torque requirements.

  • Patent number: 6257136
Abstract: Workpiece rotators are constructed for decoration registration control in spaced apart decoration stations for bottles rotatably supported by carriers of an endless chain conveyor. A screen drive at each decorating station linearly reciprocates a decorating screen to decorate the bottle. A squeegee is positioned to maintain line contact between the decorating screen and a bottle for applying decoration during each screening cycle. The workpiece rotator is coupled by a drive controller to the screen drive to rotate a bottle synchronously with linear travel of the decorating screen. The drive controller uncouples the workpiece rotator from the screen drive at times other than the application of decoration to a bottle.

  • Patent number: 6259071
Abstract: A single-point temperature control system is used with a multi-section furnace to control the exit temperature of a metal workpiece discharged from the furnace. The furnace consists of at least first, second and third sections. The temperature is sensed at the single temperature set point in the second section and compared with a desired set point temperature. The power to the second section is adjusted in order to maintain the desired set point temperature so that the metal workpiece exits the furnace at the required temperature.

  • Patent number: 6231713
Abstract: An apparatus includes an elongated cloth support having gaps wherein crease blades pass folded portions of cloth for creasing. Heated presser bars are spaced apart to receive selected portions of cloth passed from the gap by the crease blades into gaps between the presser bars which operate to apply pressure for creasing portion of cloth between the press bars. Elongated crease blades are lifted vertically from between the presser bars to allow additional creasing by the press bars under increased pressure. After creasing the presser bars are separated and elongated crease support bars are moved vertically to engage the crease for unfolding the reversely extending cloth portion while supported along a crease line. Filler applicators are positioned downwardly in close proximity to the crease lines for discharging a filler along the crease lines while supported by the elongate crease support bar.
